We've already had some time with the new Xbox Live Dashboard update, and now the new firmware, which will bring Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm to the console, is available for download today.

In addition to these services, Microsoft will be rolling out Zune Video, which promises instant-on 1080p video streaming as well as 5.1 surround sound.

We should note that Twitter, Last.fm, and Facebook will require an Xbox Live Gold membership ($50/year) and both Twitter and Facebook services require all users to be at least 18 years of age.

If you aren't a member of Xbox Live Gold, a free preview weekend will begin November 20, at 12 p.m. ET and run until November 23, at 12 p.m. ET.

For a sneak peek at these new Xbox 360 features, check out our video playlist above or click over to the slideshow.

Looks good. Why not? right. Can you listen/access last.fm while in-game though? That's the real question.

No you can not listen/access last.fm while in game. The application acts as a game itself, you can't even listen to last.fm while browsing through your dashboard as of now.

tj__88,

*** are posting?

Look at the video the person starts playing a song then they move all through the menus of the dashboard.

According to GameSpy you can access last.fm while in game.

They even have built in "Gamer Stations".
by boothsim November 16, 2009 10:49 AM PST
No, the 'Gamer stations' play music from games. But it isnt possible to play the music IN game. A lot of the beta testers flagged this up, and MS listed is as a planned future addition, but I wouldnt hold your breath. The impression I got from the beta forum is that they arent interested in adding any features at the minute, only dealing with bugs (even somthing as simple as the last.fm logo always being in the same place, leading to screen burn, wasnt addressed).

Overall it all comes accross a little half arsed, though that may simply be as some of the features are not enabled on the beta, such as FB posting your achievements etc. Without them, and without the ability to use the programs in any form on the dashboard or in game, they sink into the background very quickly.

Hmm...well if you can't listen to LastFM in game, then suddenly all of my excitement has disappeared.
I think you should be able to open your XBOX men or whatever in game and be able to access your facebook easily from there without having to go to the dash, too.

And yet even more apps that Microsoft provides, but yet forces us to pay per month to use.
I already paid for my internet, my electricity, and my 360.
Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm are free on the internet.

I can understand paying once to download the applications to the 360, but why must we continue to pay to use them? For people who already have Gold, this is fine, but it's not gonna entice too many people to join who don't play multiplayer.

The issue has always been, do you want a consistent and moderated online experience for your console or whatever you get for free?

I agree that licensing fees after you buy the software can be a problem. However, there are some maintenance costs associated with running Live!. The real value is in the design though. The navigation is clean and organized both visually and from a feature standpoint such as friends and voice chat. All games have achievements, which is a nice meta game for those who want to play. Lastly, the platform can be developed for by third parties and they can have those applications pushed out to subscribers.

The alternative is something we see with Netflix for PS3 where users have to order physical media and insert that media every time they want to use the service.

Personally I do not have a Gold account, only silver. I have my ps3 for the times I want to play online. I also do not have a facebook account nor do I twitter. Personally this update is a bit lame. When I want to custom soundtracks I just plug in my iPod. Overall I have grown tired of the nickel and dime crap.
by BCF1968 November 12, 2009 4:49 PM PST
This is lame. Why not just add a web browser like the PS3 has? That way if I want to us facebook I can just go to facebook.com. I mean what if I like MySpace instead? Wait I know whyt ehy don;t want a web browser. See if they did that I might use Hulu instead of paying $2 per episode form XBL for my favorite TV shows. Oh wait I'm not paying for overpriced Tv shows now anyways. Sorry MS your attempt at FORCING me to buy stuff still fails.

First off i think all of these apps are useless, dont any of you have a laptop? I dunno about you but when im playing COD i dont want to receive twitter updates, id rather have my computer nearby and use that for internet etc. Also i think PS3's free internet can suck it cause seriously why would i want to browse with a controler..its too last gen. I can see myself going to hulu or something for the internet but still i got netflix so whatever. It all comes down to MS just running out of ideas for apps...they need to remember its mainly a game console not a iphone.

I agree 100%. I don't see the need to stop playing CoD MW2 to let the world know I just got another head shot. Call me crazy but I'd rather keep playing. Though I have to admit I don't see the need to let the world know much of anything about my personal life.

Why is there an age limit if there isn't one on facebook? And so many teens use facebook? And so many teens expel their angst with videogames?

Looks like while streaming music the slide show works similiar to the last.fm site. But the real question is, will it allow you to play the music "videos" that are hosted on the last.fm website.

Don't get M$. Facebook is free, twitter is free, you already pay for your isp, and they expect you to pay a gold live membership to use Facebook. COME ON!! The PS3 server is free plus you get a browser. You can get Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, search the internet, even see your local online newspaper. FREE. The PS3 might be more expensive than the Arcade XBOX, but with all the added features the Xbox just goes over the price limit.

I have had this on my box for three weeks, love the last FM (nice interface and displays band photos in a slideshow style viewer), Facebook is okay, never used Twitter.

Doesn't sound like those of us with a Zune Pass will be able to stream music through Live and subsequently through our entertainment system.

I know that sucks. Whats even worse is that this is for the Zune "Video" Marketplace so the Zune Passes that you and I posses don't even matter when it comes to the new xbox update. Hell, its M$.
by rrtopaz November 16, 2009 10:52 AM PST
i don't care about any of this crap: seems like everything requires more $$$ to use it like xbox gold. never anything for the folks who cannot afford new $60 games or $50 memberships...soon they'll phase out the silver free memberships...i'll just stick to buying a few used games a year...
i used facebook and HATE IT, thanks to the hundreds of spam e-mails i've received using it...
i don't like twitter because i don't want to tell everyone every second of the day what the F i'm doing, nor do i wanna know where the H they've been...just call, use a voice...this world is full of texting morons and probably includes 99% of the c/net staff...
last.fm sucks also, full of nobodies...would rather hit a blogspot and download a file using rapidshare or mega-upload or even use my torrent portal...

I really don't understand why everyone is complaining so much. Its not like Microsoft is taking stuff away. Its my understanding that majority of xbox users have an xbox Live Gold account already, and for those majority of people, this is a bonus. No, it doesn't have a web browser, and yes, its only a select few things from the web.. but its a free addition to what you already have!

Besides, the xbox's primary audience (15-26 yr olds) use facebook already.

Only thing i find odd about this update is you have to be 18 to use it. Unless you can create accounts on these select websites from the xbox console, it would seem the job of the individual websites to police underage content/users, not xbox live.

I'm sure its a moot point tho, since many underage xbox live users probably don't advertise themselves being underage.

I laugh everytime I see M$, because it is so true. A couple of years ago I bought a PS3 because I love movies and had recently purchased an HDTV and the 480i DVD player wasn't cutting. I also had a PS2 and game a little, but not a ton. I really enjoy my PS3, but my friend who works for M$ complained about how I should get an Xbox 360, and eventually I just picked up the MW2 Special Edition Elite, and I like it.

But, the XMB on PS3 is way easier to navigate and more user friendly. The online video store for PS3 is way better, more organized to say the least. PS3 has a browser, even if it's weak it gives you options, plus if you have a PSP you can browse on it's browser, or the PS3 browser via remote play. The disc drive in the 360 is really noisy, and I have no idea why they upgraded to HDMI, yet kept it at 1.2 protocol, essentially nullyfying all the sound aspects of HDMI. 360 online is pretty sweet, though I never here anyone on a mic on MW2.

Not trying to sound like a fanboy I can honestly say since I have both-The PS3 has the superior hardware, and XBOX has done a great job marketing and using software and a great online experience. The PS3 has a ton more value in the blu-ray, free wireless connectivity. The whole 360 has more exclusives is false, none of their exclusives except for Halo are anything spectacular, and many of the best games are cross platform.

I guess it's better to have both, but to have read all of the 360 fanboys talk up the console, they're really about equal-360-online-ps3-hardware, power,blu-ray.

And about last fm-weak that it has no live videos M$ trying to suck money again. Twitter, Facebook, neat, ZUNE, could still be organized better, every foreign movie has English dub.

Although i have to agree with alot of what your saying i find that the xbox is under-estimated alot by ps3 users i own both consoles myself and get much more use out of my 360 then my ps3 i still love the ps3 but the internet connection for the ps3 is absolutly useless you will never find a group of players on littlebigplanet who dont lag and although the xbox does have lag problems they are very Minor and dont often occur also i find on xbox alot of friendly peeps with mics yet whenever i have used my mic on the ps3 no1 else is using one

All the bashing kindof surprises me. There is no reason to spend additional money. If you do not own an xbox, there should not be a problem because nothing is happening to you. If you own an xbox, but do not want to pay the annual fee for Live, then there should not be a problem because these people are not losing anything and there is no detriment in maintaining the free membership. If you own an Xbox and have Live, then you get extra stuff for free.

No one has to pay anything more on 11/17/09 than they did on 11/16/09, but for a large group of people they are getting more stuff automatically without having to pay any additional money for it. That is a pretty cool deal.

cost of Xbox: not changed
Gold membership: not changed
presence of browser: not changed
presence of facebook: ADDED
presence of Twitter: ADDED
Presence of Last.fm: ADDED
Access to Zune: ADDED

All I see is positive. It is essentially a new set of features that are being offered for free to Xbox's preferred customer set (gold members). Why does this additional feature set upset some people?
