Boxee Box: More fun than kittens?

(Credit: daveyp.com)

Even though Hulu Desktop and other software have stolen its thunder a little, we love Boxee. It was one of the first and best ways to browse streaming media from multiple outlets on a big screen, and we like its indie spirit, even though some content providers have given it a hard time.

Rumors of a Boxee Box--an actual piece of hardware to free the software from a PC--have been floating for a while, but it's becoming real very soon, according to the Boxee blog. Boxee's first hardware partner has been found, and we are already guessing as to what the Boxee Box will have inside. More importantly, how will it compare with Roku? Or, could it possibly be...

A launch event on December 7 in Brooklyn will give a lot more details including mock-ups, and CNET will be there. Look for more then. Until that day, enjoy the kittens.

Scott Stein, a New York Jets fan and CNET senior associate editor, has written about tech, entertainment, video games, and viral culture for outlets including Laptop, Wired, Maxim, Esquire Online, Asylum, and Men's Journal. He also appears on the Digital City podcast. In his spare time, you might see him performing improv in New York City (when he's not being a dad).

Hey... I'll take that old xbox! I use them myself, and its a nice, cheap way to keep the kids' hands off the dvds. Plus, they can all watch the same thing in different rooms without fighting.

I've tried Boxee and found it wanting compared to the excellent Hulu desktop. Anyone else have any luck with it?

XBMC on an HTPC for me. I'd try Boxee but signing up and joining YASN is not what I want to pay for software. For me, it's real simple. Whatever the device becomes, it has to connect to an existing home network, it has to "just play" CDs and DVDs loaded into it, and it needs to be accessible from a remote interface, i.e. RDP or VNC or Telnet. Nothing else interests me or matters, because if I can't trust that my wife can just put a DVD in and get the DVD menu, it has no place at home. Even my HTPC fails at that.

Uh... In Step 3, they have to "open the box." and therein lies your problem, sir.
