Will the Cowon iAudio 9 make a dent in iPod Nano sales? Not likely, but it keeps things interesting.

If last month's teaser of the Cowon iAudio 9 portable media player left you frozen in a state of awe, then we have good news. Our sources at Cowon have confirmed that the iAudio 9 is headed for U.S. shores in a matter of days.

At launch, Cowon will have one color (black) of the iAudio 9 on sale in the U.S., available in 8GB ($129) and 16GB ($169). No, it's not a tremendous savings over the Apple iPod Nano, but if you're looking for something that plays nice with FLAC, Ogg, Flash, and XviD files--the iAudio 9 is one of the best bargains around. More than anything, though, you're paying for Cowon's sound technology, which we expect will sound just as amazing as Cowon's other BBE-enhanced players.

The full list of iAudio 9 specifications are available from Cowon's Web site. Aside from the audio format support (MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WAV, APE, WMA) and codec support for XviD and WMV video content (sized at 320x240 pixels), the iAudio 9 also boasts a capacitive touch navigation strip (similar to the iAudio 7), 2-inch screen, composite video output (cable required), Flash Lite support (games), FM radio, text reader, photo viewer (JPG), and voice recorder. Cowan rates the iAudio 9's battery life at 29 hours for audio and 7 hours for video.

What it doesn't have, however, is the iPod Nano's video camera, pedometer, VoiceOver, video rentals, or accessory support--which pretty much ruins Cowon's chances at making much of a stir here. Still, for those who value audio quality above all else, this could be just the Nano-size music player you've been waiting for.

Stay tuned for a full review in the next few weeks. Until then, hit the photo gallery for more eye candy.

Cool. I love my iAudio 7. Great little machine, terrific sound. Can't wait to lose it so I can get one of these razor-thin babies....

I plan on getting a Zune HD, however Cowon players offer some of the best kick ass sound quality around. Great players for the price. Audio support is second to none and it would be nice if MS and Apple did the same...You know that will never happen...

I have a Zune HD and I LOVE IT!! IT also allows you to to listen to non-DRM AAC files. Love the radio, love listenign to audio books but most of all the last set of games released last (for free) are really awesome!!

I gather this player doesn't support songs downloaded from Itunes, or am I wrong?

No AAC support, so true. I really wish they'd change that. Even Sony allows that now.

It seems to support AAC files converted from iTunes, but I'm not sure those downloaded from iStore.

Anyway my iAudio 9 bought in Korea DO support AAC 128kbps files.
Herer too : http://www.trustedreviews.com/mp3/review/2009/12/10/Cowon-iAudio-9--16GB-/p2

If it works on all iAudio 9 versions, I don't know why the hell this doesn't appear in the specs, it's a good sales argument for iPod customers.

Nice, always considered Cowon a manufacturer of high quality DAPs, still use my iaudio5, one of my favourite DAPs (even though it`s getting pretty old)

Dammit, why the F do these tiny mp3 players have to be all the rage these days? I can't wait until 128 GB is the new 16 GB. I was hoping we were getting close, but seems like I'll be waiting at least a couple more years at this rate.

So I got this from my boyfriend for a early xmas gift and it is AMAZING. Its a VAST improvement over the iaudio7. As a mac user I was never able to upgrade the firmware, so I dont know if some issues were taken care of, but WOW, this has surpassed all my expectations. It even sounds better, which is crazy talk.

I have Shure 530's (soon to get some premium cans) and I can't stop playing my tunes. Most of my mp3s are at 320k and I am hearing sounds i never heard with my 7. Some lossless tunes are epic.

Long story short, get it, get it now!! The interface is 10x better, tunes as well. I love love love my 9!
