An Apple patent design shows what would happen if its iPod Shuffle and Bluetooth headset mated.

(Credit: United States Patent Application)

In a future where we're all walking around wondering how our iPod brain implants came to exist, historians can point back to this Apple patent application from 2008 and glimpse the missing link: an in-ear iPod.

Of course, others may see this as simply a Bluetooth headset with integrated memory and audio playback capabilities (music, voice mails). The Orwellian in me, though, is fairly certain this gadget will mark Apple's slow crawl into our skulls. Read the patent's abstract to judge for yourself:

Additional functionality in a wireless headset allows it to be used during times that the external device with which it is wirelessly coupled is not being used, but when the headset is nevertheless being worn. This is accomplished by integrating a media player into the wireless headset. The media player may be an audio player, capable, e.g., of playing audio files such as MPEG-3 ("MP3") files. Optionally, the media player may include a recording function as well, so that a user can record voice notes. In addition, if the external device is a telephone (mobile or landline), the availability of a recording function could make it possible for the user to record all or part of a conversation. Similarly, voicemail messages received on the user's telephone could be uploaded into the headset for later off-line playback. Media files recorded by the headset also could be downloaded to the external device.

Listen Leo.....just because you are bitter over not being able to afford Apple gear doesnt mean you have to try and ruin it for the rest of us that can.
Maybe look for a job other then Burger King?

So, this patent was filed on 4/29/2008 and there have been mp3 headsets on the market for years. (ZOpid, Sony, etc.)

Don't think it will go very far.

Apple fanboys will gobble it up
by jrud October 29, 2009 4:59 PM PDT
Why do people ALWAYS comment on the fact that apple fanboys will gobble anything up? Sure, I might like apple, don't call me a family.
by porky247 October 30, 2009 7:21 AM PDT
im sure cnet will love anything apple does
by bmccorm2 October 30, 2009 9:14 AM PDT
Completely agree. I can't believe they can patent this thing, let alone is 2008. This ring a bell?

@bmccorn2:
Exactly what I was thinking.

But seriously, how could they not do an IEM style earbud? And what about stereo music? This is the failed attempt at Apple trying to innovate, and Sony stole their thunder. It failes as much as the new Shuffle.
by Dan_DTC October 31, 2009 7:33 AM PDT
@ QA_Tester: You misspelled 'fanbois'.

I have seen that earpiece on the show COPS. Seriously, it looks like a hashpipe.

Wooo.. gonna have to rush right down and buy one...NOT. I'll leave that to knee-jerk Apple hatahs like you... Must suck to watch as Apple kicks butt all over the industry, while you sit and try to figure out how to slam them. Must get tears all over your Star Trek uniform...

Actually, check the slideshow. They threw in a couple stereo concepts too.

no dolby what? dolby headphone?
by viper396 October 30, 2009 8:13 AM PDT
@candide08, I think you mean *stereo*. Dolby is about audio noise reduction and audio encoding/compression. You should get your concepts and terminology straight before commenting, or at the very least, pay better attention to the pictures.
by TheStairMaster October 29, 2009 1:06 PM PDT
pretty sure Skullcandy brought one of these to the market a while back, maybe even before the patent.

granted the headphones were huge and the mp3 could be taken out, but it might be enough to block the patent.

Terrible design. The length of it sticking out is going to allow it to fall out of your ear if you use it for running/fitness.

Must be running low on ideas...

this is basically apple's bluetooth headset with mp3 feature. a bluetooth headset doesn't just fall out of your ear that easily. some people are just clueless and don't know what they're talking about...

am I the only that thinks that only have music in one ear kind sucks?

"am I the only that thinks that only have music in one ear kind sucks?"

DON'T WORRY~ Steve Jobs will come out & convince the gullible, I mean, the Apple faithful that they really don't need that other ear. Behold! The "iVan Gogh"

@ zanny
lol. funny
@trans
theres the plantronics Voyager 520 with A2DP, which has a bud which plugs on the main unit. i thinks that what apple would do.
by dfic October 30, 2009 9:14 AM PDT
Actually it is Apple's strategy to sell 2 of these to all the fanboys... You can listen to a different song in each ear...
by transparentman October 29, 2009 1:26 PM PDT
oh sorry, I thought it was like a bluetooth kind of thing

Hmm, maybe if it had a good way to stay attached to the ear, but having music playing in only one ear would be annoying. maybe if it had another earpiece attached too it with cable so it go into the other ear.

Two stereo versions of the concept are in the slideshow.
http://news.cnet.com/2300-17938_105-10001786-3.html?tag=mncol;txt

Also, I neglected to mention that the patent offers "voice control" as a possibility for selecting songs and controlling playback. Makes sense given Apple's current obsession with voice control for iPhone and iPod Touch 3G, as well as VoiceOver technology for Shuffle and iPod Nano.
by QA_Tester October 29, 2009 2:37 PM PDT
I think if Apple wer to make a better design of it with stereo it just might catch on. I haven't used Apple products in years (early 1990s lab in college for writing papers). Apple does have strong following and if the thing is designed well enough it will very likely sell

You Apple fanatics don't behave any better. Obviously you can dish it out but are too fragile to take it.
by scott2400 October 30, 2009 3:17 PM PDT
viper: sales and customer experience say it all - Apple can back it up, the haters just can't. There's the difference.
by sweaty_taco October 29, 2009 3:13 PM PDT
I've seen that design before. I think I've seen people use a type of heat mechanism, along with a flowering herb substance, but I can't be sure at this moment in time.

HaHa.That is so damn funny!
by Sweet_Peaches October 29, 2009 3:44 PM PDT
This looks stupid, I wouldn't want to be playing with my ear just to change the track that's playing in the mp3 player, if this is a bluetooth headset then I understand but as an mp3 player nope, on the plus side is yes it would be okay for me to put it in ONE ear because I can only HEAR through ONE ear as my other ear is dead, but I'll pass on this one.

Sony beat them to the punch. There's already a headset mp3 player; this looks like it'll just be the same thing but with an apple logo on it. Howeever, if it were a bluetooth headset as well, then that would make it more interesting

It's SonyE's BT headset, there's plenty of them, same design. Even their newer mp3 player uses dual style, but connected via a neckband. Espcially the PV740.

um... if you read the article, it is a bluetooth headset......
by DMBoricua October 29, 2009 4:49 PM PDT
Looks lame. For 1 ear? It looks like it can fall off easy too, so this wont even go for the fitness category.
