More information has trickled out about the Dell's Adamo XPS, the notebook with an eating disorder we showed you video of Thursday.

The highly abnormal machine sports some decidedly normal specs. Though nothing is official just yet, the XPS will reportedly sport either 1.4 or 1.9GHz dual-core Intel processors, 128 or 180GB SSD, integrated X4500MHD graphics, and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, sitting under a 13.4-inch WXGA LED-backlit screen.

Batteries are slated as 20Wh or 40Wh for two and a half or four hours of life respectively, but owners will need to keep an eye on their juice, as the unique heat-sensitive opening mechanism won't work when the Adamo's batteries run out.

thats funny. if the battery is drained, you're screwed. you can't open it. I knew there will be a
catch if DELL "INNOVATES" something.

And 2 to 4 hrs only? Thats lame! It can't even last cost-to-coast flight..

Mac Air can only do 4hrs and thats if you only use it for web surfing so i guess Apple cant "INNOVATE" either?
by Srex October 23, 2009 2:52 PM PDT
What are you going to do after opening a lap top with a drained battery? Stare at the blank screen inside just like any other laptop? Here's a better idea: Plug it into another power source! Sheesh.....

@Srex
Plug a laptop into a power source to recharge the battery so that you can use it?? Like the OP said, Thats lame!

@EdCenter
You can't use it with a drained battery no matter what... so YES, plug it in and then just start using it...
Just like every laptop ever made or that will be made

Considering the limitations imposed by the size, the specs are nice, much better than the first Adamo. That's the info I was waiting for and I'll seriously consider getting one, though I'm a refurb guy and will probably wait til some show up in Dell's outlet store if it's going to be a couple grand.

to heygeo,
are you seriously comparing the adamo xps to the mac air?at least the mac air can offer better specs for their notebook as where the adamo has pretty horrendous choices.also the air does have one more hour of battery life if you really want to nit pick.if anything the adamo is a washed down version of a mac air...a notebook that came out in january of last year.
by iff2mastamatt October 24, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
What do you want the opening mechanism to run of of? Fairy dust?

Provide links. Prove your statement, Fanboy.

@Paul Christie:
You want to compare specs? Ok here goes:
Processor. Macbook Air: 1.86 or 2.13 Ghz Core 2 Duo. Adamo: 1.4 or 1.9 Ghz Dual Core... something. Details unknown.
RAM. MacBook Air: 2 GB DDR3. Adamo: 4 GB DDR3.
Graphics: Macbook Air: Nvidia 9400M with 256 MB Shared VRAM. Adamo: Intel GMA 4500MHD.
Display: Both: 13 in LCD Display
Storage: Macbook Air: 120 GB HD or 128 GB SSD. Adamo: 128 or 180 GB SSD.
Battery Life: Macbook Air: "Up to 5 hours of wireless productivity". Adamo: 2 or 4.5 hours, depending on the battery.
Price: Macbook Air: $1499 or $1799. Adamo: Price unknown, but expected above the Macbook Air.

You can draw your own conclusions, but in my book the MacBook Air is a more well rounded machine. Plus the design on the Adamo is just plain weird because it cannot be used on one's lap.

@slickuser

If the battery is drained and there is no power nearby, why do you think would you need to open it?

Just like the MBA this is a gadget, with limited usability for a limited market.

This is a premium laptop, with a very unique design. I actually think they are innovating a lot with this new design, but it needs to be seen if it is practical.
And 4h is not a lot, but should be sufficient for most people.

very impressed with the engineering skill it took them to build this.

I expected it to have some half-hearted Atom processor in it, but it actually has a very respectable CPU in it. and the GPU is more than sufficient to do HD and everything but games.

good job, Dell.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor in MacBook Air is light years beyound this lazy dual core in here. I thought dell was close but, they still "light years away" and who know about "one year later" apple theme about MacBook Air line?. aPPLE does not compromise.

My Thursday schedual at school has me taking notes for 6 hours plus a few more hours of studying. If I were to have this laptop I would be screwed. I can't understand how people could get around with a laptop that has a short lived battery. My VAIO goes for about 8-9 hours and that is just enough for me.

Then obviously the Adamo XPS is not for you! I don't see why you would need a $ 2000 notebook intended for people who value design above pure functionality for your studies in the first place? It's like saying about a Ferrari: "Oh, but I cannot even take my buddies to go bowling..."
