Wii 2 to be smaller and cheaper?

If you're expecting bigger and better things from the Wii's successor, you may be let down. Nintendo might be satisfied with what the current Wii is already able to offer. According to TechRadar and Popular Mechanics, the company's creative mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto says, "With both the Wii remote itself and Wii Motion Plus, what we've been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience."

Does the "right price" mean the next Wii will go for a comparable price to what it is now? Miyamoto continued: "And while we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient."

Sure, it's probably too early to forecast what the Wii 2 will offer, but as of now it sounds like Nintendo may not look to offer more of a graphical powerhouse, but instead continue to deliver what has proven to be a winning formula--just in a more compact and inexpensive package.

What do you think? Are you content with more of what has seemed to work for Nintendo or do you want a more powerful Wii with functionality like HD graphics?

I won't buy a Wii until it has HD resolution, 5.1 sound, HD-disc reading, and offers a real controller (something similar to the XBox or PS3 controller) as the standard, and the motion controller as the optional. I appreciate the motion controls, but I don't know of many games that are really killer apps. On the other side, Halo with a Wii-mote gun would be amazing.

If it did have all those things you still wouldn't buy it because it would just be an XBox or PS3 clone which you already have. The Wii is really good at what it does without trying to be a media center or copying what Sony and Microsoft are doing.

Just wait until Microsoft starts selling the Natal addition to the X-box 360. That's basically what you want. For more info, just search Project Natal on Cnet or click on the Natal link just under the Crave banner.

HD and 5.1 is about all I would change on the console hardware side; the current Wii output looks so 1990s on our 52" 1080i. Of course I'd guess that such revisions would probably exclude a lower price, both for the updated console AND for the any future game titles (hi-def development does cost more).

For me there's nothing inherently wrong with the existing interface, but it needs a serious infusion of more mature titles that are written to take full advantage of it, rather than current games that amost always feeling like the software is just soft pedaling around the interface as if it's a necessary evil. So far the gaming experience for almost every older audience-oriented title I've tried on the Wii has been rather disappointing. Not that these are specifically adult-oriented but Guitar Hero and Rock Band have tried to make their guitars at least resemble real guitars; it's time that the controller add-ons (or even straight-on replacements) for shooters resemble a real gun in both look and operation rather than the simplistic tripe that Nintendo currently passes off as a good-enough; the same can be said for steering wheel controls as well. Enough with the tunnel vision focus on games for preteens.

I'd want HDMI just so I don't have to swtich inputs on the TV. I could care less about the graphics. Sure, it'd be nice to have HD, but cmon- these games are about fun, not flash. I enjoy playing the games on Wii more than the other two consoles.

Like JamesCS said, if you make the Wii into a PS3/XB360, then what's the point of buying a wii?

@ Earthquake152.

Project Natal looked awesome at E3, but for all practical gaming purposes it will be useless. Could you imagine playing a game like Halo with no controller at all? Do you really think gamers will stand up hours at a time mimicking the movements and actually be able to pull off the precision needed to play a game like that? Forget Halo, what about a simple 2-D side scroller? It is more of a novelty item the way it is designed and will only be good for a limited type of games, like the ones showcased during the demo at E3. XBOX 360 owners generally fall in to the "hardcore gamer" demograph, so I'm not sure what kind of games they plan to create with that technology that their users base would buy.

Are we sure he isn't referring to a Wii Slim, rather than the next generation of Wii? Because what he's describing sounds like what Sony did with the PS3 Slim.

Can the Wii actually get any smaller? lol, it's pretty damn small compared to anything else out there.
by jskrenes October 21, 2009 8:32 PM PDT
I don't know how you'd get much smaller unless you sacrifice either the optical drive or wired controller ports. Wired controller ports probably aren't critical, but I don't think the home console market is quite ready for a disk-drive-free console.
by fiegs3386 October 22, 2009 8:21 AM PDT
Who wants a disc drive free console? Not me. What do you do with your old games after you beat them? I prefer to trade in my games after I get all the use I want. Madden 11 comes out next Aug...I plan on trading in Madden 10 after the football season. Can't do that if you don't have a disc.

Having HD and cutting on size and prize are not contradictory any more; the costs of the video subsystem have been falling like a rock this year, and integration with other components is progressing very well. They can do both. Yay Moore's Law.

All of Nintendo's home consoles retailed for about $200 on release. Its hardly a surprise that thier next console will also retail for about $200.

I like the Wii. I think it made the other game companies push the envelope for their consoles. However, it's not the console that gets the most use. That goes to my 360, which has more things to do outside of just being a gaming console.

Now, Nintendo is strictly for games ... and I will most likely buy the next Wii (or whatever they call it) no matter what. Mainly for Zelda and Mario. However, they really need to up the graphics of it. I know it's the gameplay that makes the game, not the graphics ... but if I have two systems and a game comes out for both, I'm more likely to get the game on the system with the better graphics (even if that game costs ten dollars more).

Gaming companies make most of their profit on games. If you rely solely on first party games, you're gonna shoot yourself in the foot. The next game console must be in HD. I've noticed that text alone is a lot more difficult to read on non-HD games.

Here's a suggestion that I doubt will happen, but Nintendo should come out with two new consoles. One for the lower $200-250 price point, and another with higher graphics for around $300-$350. PC games have to deal with different graphic cards and memory constraints, so why not consoles? Consumers will make the choice and I bet the majority will pay more and go for the higher end.

Not likely to work.... most companies do NOT want to try and support 2 different consoles at the same time that they are making themselves.

I just got a wii on Monday (2 days ago). I have had an xbox 360 for over 3 years. I just got a 42"HD TV this spring. I didn't own a Game cube but the graphics look so out dated. Buying component Cables does help some of the colors (and tweaking the picture on the TV). But I thought Mario cart looked better on the Nintendo 64 on my neighbors 20".

I never bought the wii to play the latest and greatest games I have the xbox 360 for that. But comparing Burnout paradise to Mario Cart. or Resident Evil 4 compared to RE 5. Its not even in the same ball park. I don't even know if people called the wii the "next Generation" of video gaming. But its not.

I would think even just getting the wii to 720p which is even starting to become a lower standard would work. If I could get 720p on my 42" I would be happy.

I wonder if Nintendo is going to start feeling the effects of not having HD. Sony and Xbox don't plan on doing another Console until at least 2012 but more likely 2014. By then I'm going to go to a museum to see what 480i looks like.

But really what I have been preaching for a while now is the next generation of gaming needs to be build around 3D. Not the red and blue glasses but what you get in the theater and what everybody is trying to make there HD Tv be. Who ever can get 3D video gaming out first is going to be the winner!
Even at 720p but in 3d with the wii controller. People are going to be buying them up as fast as.... well the wii.

When you get 3d video on my TV at home (not having to buy a new TV! You have next generation.

Seconded. I got a Wii a couple months after launch and I loved it. Then, last Fall I got a 42" 1080p TV and a PS3. The Wii mostly collects dust now and occasionally gets used by the kids. But even they use the PS3 more often. Yes, there are good games on the Wii and I like the Wiimote; but, games look like junk on a big screen HDTV, especially when compared to a HD system like the 360 or PS3. In order for the Wii's successor to continue Nintendo's strong sales, it will have to upgrade to HD graphics or the hardcore market won't buy and the casual market won't see a reason to upgrade. This is not to say HD graphics can't be put in a smaller, cheaper package, but they will be needed or there's no need to make a "new" Wii.
by PiCASSiMO October 21, 2009 5:09 PM PDT
I still have a 27" CRT TV (Sony Trinitron) and will be purchasing a 50 or 50" HDTV by the end of this year, along with a PS3 for Blu-Ray and GT5. I was thinking of purchasing the Wii earlier, but with all the comments about how unimpressive the games look on a large screen, I think I will wait for Wii 2 (or Wii HD) to come out to capitalize on the amount of screen real estate I'll have. Admittedly, I enjoyed playing various Wii titles including Mario games, but until HD (even at 720p) comes out, I will pass on the current Wii.

"More compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient" doesn't necessarily mean their future projects won't include HD capability. Those two points are vague enough to mean anything as far as technical power are concerned. Perhaps they would like to design a Wiimote + HD console whenever they can get it into a more compact and cost effective package - whatever that actually means as far as specs and price is completely up for speculation, and the quote suggests they don't have anything past concept conversations or sketches - if that.

A follow up to the Wii doesn't have to have cutting edge graphics. But, it should at least be able to product antialiased graphics in HD resolutions - just increase the rendering resolution without increasing texture or pixel shaders. And probably an HDMI connection just to compatibility. A bump in sound would be nice, but not really necessary.

I'd guess they needed the new accessory to be able to have better tracking for HD resolutions anyways.

Come to think of it, I can't really think of a "must have" feature set for an Wii 2. Unless Nintendo wants to get heavy into digital distribution, or maybe into media, the Wii is at a rather nice zen-like plateau for the mass market.

I think that the Next console from Nintendo should offer HD, now that a lot more people have HD televisions. So by the time Nintendo releases their next console, most people will have one.

As for JJohnson1701's comment: "offers a real controller (something similar to the XBox or PS3 controller) as the standard, and the motion controller as the optional". Developers have the right to choose their control setup. They can use either the GCN controller or the Wii controls. So in reality the Wii does have a real controller, it is up to the developers to use it or not. The PS3 and the Xbox360 will be in the same situation when they release their motion controls, developers can choose between them.

I would hope that on the next Wii, or whatever the system is called, that it isn't just a smaller version of the current Wii. Sure better graphics and more power would be nice but I hope to see something innovative from Nintendo for whatever comes next.

While I play a limited amount of Wii games, they look simply OK on my 50" HD Plasma. Wii 2 better had HD graphics.

I would only consider buying Wii 2 without High-resolution if they release the next Zelda exclusively on it and not on Wii 1. Which would be supper-fricking lame. But I would spend the price of the system and the game to play the next Zelda. Twilight Princess was amazing. I will play the next one.

I think an HD Wii would be much better and would really prop them up nicely against the PS3 and 360...but a smaller, which is useless, and cheaper Wii? I would say no.

Yeah, it's not just little kids buying it. I got a Wii in July, and I'm 36 years old. I haven't touched a videogame system since my original NES when I was a teen.

Some of you could realize that many of us who enjoy the Wii are not, and never will be, gamers, and we have no desire to sit in front of the TV with the controllers used by other systems. I don't have anything against gaming that way, it's just not for me. And yes the Wii could have better graphics. But I really enjoy my Wii as-is.
by iowampb39 October 21, 2009 5:39 PM PDT
I heard rumor of a HD WII being released in 2011, only 5 years later than other consoles with HD.

I will never understand the mass hype of wii though.. I mean the thing can't even play DVD movies, SD graphics, and real lack of games but yet people pay a premium on the console and controllers. I will give them credit somewhat for the DS though.. it has some good games and is a nice system but like 90% of the games released on DS suck as well but all sell well.

Some WII games may be fun/novel but when it comes down to it, if you have an HD TV, nothing beats a PS3 for all it can do... It packs one hell of a punch for the price.

Yeah, and like 95% of games released on PSP suck, but no one is forcing you to buy and play them.

At least the PSP has value as a Personal Media Player. Photos, Music, Movies, and Games is a pretty compelling package. I love my PSP-2000. If you want that from a DS you need an R4 cart.
