PS3 Motion Freedom 3D controller (Credit: Blaze )

A Wii remote for PlayStation 3? That appears to be exactly what video game accessory maker Blaze had in mind when it conceived of the PS3 Motion Freedom 3D controller.

With a design most likely lifted from Nintendo's book, the new 3D motion-sensing device bears a striking resemblance to the Wii remote right down to its form factor. The key difference is the Motion Freedom 3D's suite of PS3-centric controls, ranging from the PlayStation's signature cross, square, triangle, and circle buttons to the analog stick.

According to Blaze, this hybrid concoction has been ergonomically designed and will give gamers complete control. The only problem is the lack of news on pricing and availability in the company's press release, so there's no telling when you can give it a go.

Why would Sony support a third party device like this when they are coming out with their own Motion Controller next spring?? This seems like a dumb idea at this point.

Did you even read the article? Blaze makes the device, not Sony.
by viper396 October 14, 2009 9:58 AM PDT
What could Nintendo successfully sue for? Wireless remote controls are hardly unique to the Wii. ...hey guess what, my TV has one too.
by mswete7 October 14, 2009 10:03 AM PDT
Nintendo will sue Blaze because Nintendo owns the D-Pad patent.
by viper396 October 14, 2009 12:20 PM PDT
All you people claiming Nintendo will sue over the D-Pad need to check your facts. The Nintendo D-Pad Patent expired in 2005 as did the patent on the original NES. That's why most NES clones are legal.
by wii1245 October 13, 2009 8:54 PM PDT
Sony has better be careful. If Nintendo spots this, they will cry out "LAWSUITS!"

by hafenbrack October 14, 2009 6:10 AM PDT
Sony has nothing to do with this. This is a Third Party controller. Sony is inversting it's time and money in a completely different controller...as mentioned in the article.

yea Project Natal right? errr. i mean the Eyetoy.
by Tedders85 October 14, 2009 5:05 AM PDT
I hope they have a reason to have the X, square, triangle and circle buttons rotated clockwise one spot... Cause that's going to get confusing as hell.

Sony's not making the thing.... Blaze is. However, it is stupid for Sony to approve this thing, considering they are putting one out soon.

on the Dual Shock 3. its kind of weird concept. you use the Duel Shock 3 like its the Wii Nunchuk then the wannabe Wiimote as the Sonymote. seems strange but well just have to wait and see.
by peterwhite October 14, 2009 8:54 AM PDT
That's pretty sad. On the one hand you could possibly argue that there's only so many options for creating a single hand held remote control - but on the other hand - damn! May as well come out with some exciting new Sony titles like: BARIO (try to save the queen of the hood), the History of Thelda (female elf trying to save kingdom), Orb of Duty (cheap knock off of Halo and COD - oh wait, they already made Kill Zone).

Killzone is actually one of the most beautiful games ever. nd Sony hasn't anything to do with this.
@ccmike72
More like his wit was never existent lol

Id be surprised if Nintendo sued Blaze. And for all those who keep saying Sony better watch out. Lawsuite. read the effing article! SONY DIDNT MAKE THE REMOTE!

Although i have to admit, I do like the Blaze wannabe Nintendo design more then Sony's. motion controls on the PS3 is gonna get great! cant wait.

Nintendo will sue them simply because Nintendo owns the patent to that specifically-designed D-Pad. Look at any other controller, no other controller has a D-Pad with perfect 90 degree angles except for controllers and handheld consoles made by Nintendo.

people bash the wii(mote), and now they're copying it.... leaves me thinking that nintendo is the only company doing any real innovating in the industry these days.

This is dumb. I hope Sony wouldn't blatantly rip off the Wii Remote, especially since it isn't that great of a controller anyway, plus Nintendo would sue the pants off them

Nintendo wont sue, Nintendo cant sue. its not the same technology. Nintendo already admited this. They said they already tried the Sony concept for the Wii be decided against it and went with they they have instead. the Wii uses a sensor bar while the Sony idea uses the Eyetoy to track movements.
by tubaloth October 15, 2009 3:32 PM PDT
How does this work? Did they come up with there own Motion Controller and it passes it to the PS3? Or is this just a new fancy controller that uses the Sixaxs functions?

honestly they should have made it for the xbox 360. Its the one that needs motion controller.

Hope this is a joke! Otherwise it is an obvious rip off and a serious lack of innovation on Sony's part. You would think they would go the way of Microsoft in having a motion sensitive camera that doesn't require any kind of handheld device and is better at picking up motion than the Wii-mote. Still, I really think this is a joke as I think a read something about Sony finding a way to use their Eye Toy for motion sensing...

Seriously though, what is with the motion control stuff?! I am a pretty hardcore gamer and absolutely hate motion controls for their unresponsiveness and split second lag between commands!

Gamer you may be but reader you are not. Sony doesn't make this controller n00b. Blaze does. And yes Sony's concept includes the eyetoy.
by KingJames2132 October 16, 2009 6:05 AM PDT
The photo is a fake. Come on ppl, sony already shown the final model for the controller. The blaze blueprint doesnt even have the ball on top. Nice try blaze but u get a EPIC FAIL.
