Dell teases with new Adamo shots

We've mentioned a couple of times how the new, revamped version of Dell's high-end Adamo laptop has a pretty interesting design twist. After offering a few tantalizing teases (including a brief appearance at a press conference last week), the company has now released a couple of shots that show just how the superthin laptop can get away with being only around 10mm thick and still be usable for typing.

Dell says: "Because so many people who have had a sneak peek of Dell's superthin Adamo XPS laptop seem to be falling in love with it, the company today released two more photos of the highly stylized, thin 9.99-mm Adamo by Dell system. The Adamo XPS is as intriguing open as it is closed."

We say, it's an intriguing way to design a laptop, and even though we've only seen it up close very briefly, the idea of an offset hinge which, in effect, props the keyboard up at a more ergonomic angle, is worth further exploration.

Dell has hinted that the new Adamo would be out in time for the holidays, but for now will only say, "Stay tuned for more information on this head-turning product."

it has to. for higher end equipment there isnt enough space for a cooling solution that wont leave your lap with third degree burns lol. and pricing its alumanium and its insanely thin haha. *cough* macbook air *cough* when u get that thin u need specialized parts. costs a lot more
by Rorix08 October 12, 2009 3:22 PM PDT
I don't see how that would be comfortable at all letting it rest on your lap...

Still, looks very intriguing. .

I really don't think that laptop is placed the way it is supposed to be used. It must be a screen like the one in the adamo. Look at the ports, they are not even in a horizontal position. Those are just fancy press shots.
by genius739 October 13, 2009 10:30 PM PDT
Rorix, I think it's pretty obvious that its a flipped picture.
by romodoc October 14, 2009 8:06 AM PDT
I don't think the picture is flipped, unless they attached the laptop to a wall, the computer is resting on its back though (I guess), Isn't wear the way it swivels? the hinges axis is within the cpu dept and not above it which means it should have a concave area to fit the screen in. the keyboard dept added to that will leave almost no space in that area. then you need to fit a battery and, well all the components. I would like to see more pictures, is kinda cool.

Still can't get those cheesy-creepy ads out of my mind from its initial release. Yuck.

It is sleek, but I wouldn't want to try to play Crysis on it, I don't want to have to deal with spontaneous ultralight combustion.
by lanby753 October 14, 2009 7:39 AM PDT
Everyone dumps on little Paris. Sure, she's an overpriced toy but useless? I don't think so, I don't want to be crude but you know what I mean. Same with the Adamo & the Air, if you can afford it they could be handy little travel items.
by MaLvaDo39 October 12, 2009 3:26 PM PDT
That would cramp your wrists more. You want a flatter keyboard, not an incline.

by robertorosco October 12, 2009 3:45 PM PDT
The first picture you're looking at is the Adamo laying back on its screen panel, not the keyboard panel. I thought too for a second that the keyboard had a steep incline. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea for Dell to release a profile shot with that position.
by tgjohnson October 15, 2009 1:40 AM PDT
that is just not true robertorosco, how can you just make things up like that with no basis for your statements?
by Ricochet44 October 12, 2009 3:28 PM PDT
I think it will be safe too assume that the only thing that this laptop can do is surf the web.

It's looks great but doesn't seem to be very useful.

it reminds me of the Razr design, how all the cell phone thickness was at the end, allowing the rest of the phone to just be buttons and screen.

It LOOKS very chic, but will the design cause unforeseen problems? I will stick with my MacBook Air for now.

It's super slow (2-5x slower than a MacBook), and despite it's slim size, only .5 pounds lighter than a MacBook. It's also much slower than a MacBook Air, and barely thinner and 1 pound heavier.

How do you know that? There have been no specs released or any demonstrations. Keep your month shut until the facts are there.
by sasquatch3 October 12, 2009 4:23 PM PDT
we don't have any specs yet
all we have are pictures

for all we know it could have a desktop i7 with 24gb ram and weigh 7 grams
by doobz94 October 12, 2009 4:38 PM PDT
You're thinking of the Adamo, not the Adamo XPS.
by Gold_Storm_Mac October 12, 2009 4:53 PM PDT
i dont think 4 processing cores and 24 gb ram would fit in that package.
by jason1692 October 13, 2009 4:33 AM PDT
id guess 2-4 gigs of ram, 667 speed, dual core core 2 duo. probly 1.8-2.4 ghz. 1440-900 screen. nvidia integrated 9400 graphics. 160-320 hd.
by btr1389 October 13, 2009 11:13 AM PDT
@jason1692

I can see 2 gb of ram maybe 800mhz but could be 667, a ULV processor definitely not above 2.0 ghz, MAYBE a 1440x900 screen but more likely 1366x768, an intel integrated graphics chipset, and a pci ssd card. They won't be able to fit a normal 1.8 inch HD into that. Those are 8mm thick. That would only leave 2 mm for case and that doesn't sound realistic.

Adamo, like a netbook but more expensive
doesn't even come with a free Apple logo

When did the pursuit of the thinnest laptop become important? I don't use many systems out there because I don't like something that's SO small and SO thin. They're uncomfortable and do not present the best user experience. Again...we seem to be heading down the path of form over function. What a waste. This will go about as far as the previous Adamo...and most recent Dell efforts recently. I wish someone would stop trying to best Apple and just innovate on their own...

thin notebooks have been around for a long time
race for the thinnest started with the MacBook Air
by mvagustacorse October 12, 2009 4:51 PM PDT
actually, Sony has been making thin laptops long before the Macbook air (Vaio X505). If you don't like thin laptops, don't buy it. That's what's great about products like this, they are available to give consumers a choice. Believe it or not, the purpose of this laptop could just be to target a segment of consumers rather than "best" apple - typical Apple snob, everything is not about you and your precious company.
by Gold_Storm_Mac October 12, 2009 5:10 PM PDT
@mvagusta...
sony's notebooks were nowhere as thin or as fast and useful as the air. they had slow processors, small screens and keyboards, weren't as thin, looked ugly, and not full featured. worst of all, they ran windows (fanboy bait):)
by jason1692 October 13, 2009 4:35 AM PDT
windows has fanboys? what is this world coming to :b
by mvagustacorse October 13, 2009 8:43 AM PDT
@Gold_Storm_Mac
Considering that the thin Sonys were out years ahead of the Mac Air, obviously the processors cannot be compared apples to apples. "nowhere as thin" as the mac air is plain wrong, look up the specs for the Sony X505, you'll find that it is within mm of the air. As for usability, the sony did just fine in our company running all of our major applications, at least as "usable" and business relevant as the Mac Air claims to be. Mac Air is nice, but makes the same sacrifices in features for the sake of appearance and mobility, so to use the Air as some kind of benchmark for usability is ridiculous.
by o2bpitching October 12, 2009 4:31 PM PDT
Not loving the offset hinge and the weird transition from fat to thin.
But I will have to wait and see it in person before I can make a final decision about it.

Can you put a DVD in that darn thing? If it costs more than $100, then it is pretty worthless. I don't care if we don't know the specs yet. It's pretty easy to guess the maximum specs on an anorexic laptop. Can it at least run Photoshop? Doubt it. Come on! Let?s make something useful people. I never did like the fashion crowd. I'm going to listen to Ten now and dream of the 90's.

It`s like an "Air" but thinner , more powerful , and more ports...and costs less.
And being based on Win7 , more useful.

It`s like an "Air" but thinner , more powerful [citation needed], and more ports [citation needed]

Considering the specs aren't out yet, the "more powerful" and "more ports" are guesses.
by streamline35 October 12, 2009 11:03 PM PDT
Actually we don't need to guess about the ports - you can see a headphone jack, 3 usb ports, and one ethernet port. However, we certainly know nothing about specs yet, so just hold your horses leo.

I think debating adamo vs air is stupid anyway - they are both overpriced and underpowered
by ckh1272 October 13, 2009 2:11 AM PDT
Go ahead and provide with those specs and price that don't exist Leo. We're waiting.
by btr1389 October 13, 2009 11:03 AM PDT
@streamline35

If you look closely, you can see 2 USB ports, displayport, an audio port and then something else. It's not Ethernet, but it might be power.
by streamline35 October 13, 2009 11:46 AM PDT
Ah, good call btr. The cnet shots are smaller, so it looked like two USB ports on the side - I found a larger photo where I can actually see it is a displayport. And I agree - the other odd one is probably power, though it's still too small to see for sure. Here are the larger photos I found for anyone who is curious.

Holy smokes gang, you're all completely missing the point here!!!

Who cares about ports, thickness or weight or any of that inconsequential stuff???

The question we need to have answered is whether you'll be able to get one of these with those colourful lip gloss coatings, no?
by ckh1272 October 13, 2009 2:17 AM PDT
Here you go Leo. Until there are specs for the new one, here are the present specs:
Dell Adamo Pearl:
$1499
1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Centrino technology
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-Bit
2GB 800MHz DDR3 dual-channel memory3
128GB3 solid state drive
Intel® GS45 Integrated Graphics with 256MB Memory

MacbookAir:
$1499
1.86GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 1066MHz frontside bus
2GB Memory
120GB SATA hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics

You'll see plus and minuses for both, but the prices start the same. Debate that all you want Leo, but everything about the new model is pure conjecture until the actual specs are known.

My mammoth wish ,was to ever run windows natively on MacAir. just beacuse of the stylish outtercase, and okey specs. But that was just a wish. and only technology fairly wish can come true over time. However IF this Dell thing is true, Then i dont need To wait for the Macair wish. I dont care about spec I know u cant have it all.As long as they dont throw in anything less than a core 2 for intel and i will take any x2 AMD and above..Imposible things are happening everyday , i see. finally window world meet Mac world in harware and OS. THIS IS IT for APPLE ,wait till dell Ketch -up with their iphone phone in future.
by jason1692 October 13, 2009 4:41 AM PDT
windoors 7, u realize this is dell right? with one exception, the adamo, dell isnt known for inovation or good pricing or value. its stuff is overpriced and underpowered. xps line is bleh. look at cyberpowerpc.com and ibuypower.com to c what i mean. or a nice asus. gateway is even better. apple isnt good just because their stuff looks good. its because apple has succeded in making its name synonimous with style. not to mention first class tech support. not like dell with some guy from india(first hand experience lol my dad has a dell desktop) dell will never catch up with apple. look to sony and asus if anyone. btw i admit im an apple fan but i can still be objective lol
by docster87 October 14, 2009 1:48 AM PDT
I've got Windows XP setup as a bootcamp option on my iMac. I see no reason you couldn't set up Windows on the Mac Air... I can boot directly to Windows or I can pull up a VM window and have Windows in that.
by dennisl59 October 13, 2009 7:06 AM PDT
Another product looking for customers. They should have spent the $$$ improving Technical Support.

Dell makes fantastic monitors that don't cost a lot and I've owned several Dell computers and all of them have performed well. They certainly aren't underpowered or overpriced compared to Apple. you must be 12 years old.

@jason1692 "dell isnt known for inovation or good pricing or value. its stuff is overpriced and underpowered" IREAD this over and over and over again. and i agree with u. But read my lips. THIS IS IT for APPLE east meet west with A red dead revolver from MIcrosoft and dell. top two FRENEMIES adamo and win 7. the same way macair and macos CALLED IT. i have waited for this so long "AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ALDULT LIFE" i,m proud of dell.
by CreativeMalcolm October 13, 2009 1:47 PM PDT
Dude you could always run Windows on an Air... OS X is just gonna be faster cause it's a sleeker OS from a resources stand point.
