Is Uncharted 2 enough to put the PS3 on top?

Uncharted 2 has received unanimous critical acclaim for its immersive story, fantastic visuals, and cinematic presentation. But is the title enough to put Sony back on top? The answer isn't necessarily cut and dry. There's a lot more Sony needs to accomplish for the PlayStation 3 to finish first in the current-generation console war.

If there's one thing that has mostly been overlooked by the mainstream video game media, it's the fact that the slimming down of the PS3 was more than just a price drop. Symbolically speaking, the PS3 Slim was a complete rebranding for the console, forcing consumers to detach themselves from the negatives that the original bulky and expensive PS3 was associated with.

Sony even changed the console's logo from the Spider-Man font to the much more whimsical, airy design emblazoned on the slim and all-current game box art. PS3 commercials have also gotten a much-needed facelift, and we think the latest Uncharted 2 ad is actually quite brilliant.

Sony's PS3 underwent a radical rebranding and price cut, both of which have convinced some analysts that it will have been the best-selling hardware in September. But systems also need games, and exclusive ones at that, to sell themselves. Uncharted found success as a sleeper hit in its first iteration, and in just two years it's been propelled to system-seller status.

It achieves where other Sony franchises on the PS3 have failed; it allows you to "live a movie," so to speak--making the most of what Sony does best and maximizing the mass entertainment storytelling appeal of videogames. Like Sony's commercial boasts, this is a game others will want to watch you play.

On the other hand, Uncharted is a genre game, a platform-adventurer that's not kid-friendly. LittleBigPlanet is a tent pole family game for the PS3, but it launched a year ago. It's important to keep in mind Sony's library as a selling point for the PS3, and LittleBigPlanet does have a long shelf life due to its unique and somewhat timeless design, but Sony could have done with two or three more games on the order of magnitude of Uncharted 2 this holiday--a new Ratchet & Clank doesn't quite cut it.

If Sony wants to treat the PS3 Slim with the excitement of a new system launch, enough games need to come out to overtake the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Instead of outperforming, Sony is still playing catch-up. Right now, it's only matching punch for punch with Halo 3: ODST and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. That's close, but we're not sure it's enough to push Sony over the top.

No i don't think so. What sony needs is a franchise they can relate to the ps3 or something. Microsoft has Master Chief from Halo, Nintendo has Mario, link..etc. Sony has....Jak? They need something/somebody that can pack a punch in an advertisement and make people want to pick their system up.

Sony has Kratos and Snake.. I'd say they're pretty big franchises...as well as being easily recognisable as Sony icons...
by RockaTech October 13, 2009 7:21 PM PDT
yeah but snake has been on other platforms before like the gamecube and the wii and soon will be on the 360. But snake would be a good icon.
by FistsMcPain October 13, 2009 7:43 PM PDT
Also, new as he is.. Sackboy.
by RockaTech October 13, 2009 10:20 PM PDT
I really want to play littleBIGplanet!! but i dont have a ps3. I hope the psp version will be as good as the home console counterpart because then I could play it on the go.
by FistsMcPain October 13, 2009 10:27 PM PDT
Yeah, it looks like it should be about the same, which is pretty cool. Honestly, it doesn't look like it should be too hard to port to the PSP. Hopefully it is every bit as good, so you can enjoy it too!
by TheGlue29 October 14, 2009 6:32 AM PDT
@RockaTech...Snake [most likely] isn't coming to 360. Raiden is. Kojima and Snake are coming to PSP. Raiden and the benchwarmers at Kojima Productions are going to 360.

Reading Kojima's recent interviews, it's painfully obvious that while he'd like to explore other titles or even new IPs, Konami is just interested in more MG$. Clearly they are doing MG$R for the money...hence it being ported to 360.

It's not even going to be a stealth or tactical game, lolz.

But to the point, I contend that Sony is just fine. Their exclusive library is IMO second to none with games like the Motorstorm series, the Resistance series, Killzone 2, LittleBIG Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo, the Uncharted series, Heavenly Sword, R&C and of course the God of War Collection and GoW3.

If Sony wants to re-market those games now that the slim is $299 and the holidays are approaching, I could see that being a good idea, but honestly they have MORE than enough exclusive games to push the PS3. O and there's the whole Blu Ray thing.

As for the hype about ODST, it's empty. It's a $60 expansion for the n00biest shooter this side of CoD, and I have yet to see a site without the words "Xbox 360" in it's domain name to give ODST a score higher than 8.6.

Then there's the Patcher September report showing 360 was dead last, moving 60,000 less consoles than PS3. Things are looking really good for Sony. You can have Raiden. He's the most hated character in MGS (hero OR villain) anyways.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 9:12 AM PDT
I think its pretty safe to say Snake will not be going to the Xbox. The only time MS got anything Metal Gear is was Raiden. Both times. With MGS2 and now Rising. Everyone thought Kojima would port MGS3 to the Xbox. Didnt happen. Everyone thought he would port MGS4 to the 360. didnt happen. And like some said above, Kojima wants to move on but Komani wants more MG$. Also, its obvious he never wanted MGS on the 360. Hence why he put so much emphasis on how MGS Peace Walker for the PSP was the TRUE MGS5. the Metal Gear Solid he wants to make and is a true part of the MGS story arc. Unlike Rising which is a spin off.

I do agree though that Sony needs better characters associated with their console. Sackboy is a good start. Jak, not so much.

But Kratos is a good one.
by RockaTech October 14, 2009 11:26 AM PDT
yeah Peace Walker looks awesome that was one of the main reasons I got a psp this year to prepare for the release. Supposedly there is supposed to be some mysterious exciting hidden feature that will want people to pick up a psp or at least according to IGN.com. But I can't wait to play multiplayer co-op on it!

@ TheGlue29

You make a blanket statement about ODST ratings and don't do any research, typical Sony Fanboy. Here is the list of sites that reviewed ODST and it's score....most 9/10 or above.

@TheGlue29

I agree, Sony needs to create an insanely awesome holiday bundle (for $299.99). They haven't even announced one yet that I'm aware of.

No Online coop throughout the story mode = epic fail in my eyes. I will not be getting this until its a greatest hits title. To busy with my ODST, Shadow Complex and later in the year Lost Planet 2 and Forza 3.

None of the games you listed as being too busy playing to purchase Uncharted 2 contains "Online coop throughout the story mode" they all have separate co-op modes.. so I don't see why it would be such a deal breaker for you here...
by superjay77 October 14, 2009 6:36 AM PDT
Lost Planet 2 and ODST both have online throughout the story mode. Please do some research before you make yourself look ignorant.
by Shinobi2099 October 14, 2009 8:56 AM PDT
@superjay
Too bad ODST sucks lol. Just get Uncharted. And the co-op mode in Uncharted is great. ODST is a rehash, Uncharted 2 is beauty. Pure beauty. This is what gaming should be.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 9:16 AM PDT
Oh yes, Halo STDS, you paid $60 for a Halo 3 expansion. Sucker...and Lost Planet 2? give me a break. Thats Crapcoms attempt at making their own Queers of Bore. No thanks. Ill give my $60 to Naughty Dog. This isnt debatable. its one of the best looking and well made gaves this generation. Nothing on the Xbox even comes close to it. And before you all start on the "your a fanboy blah blah" i own all the systems. While Xbox has some worthy games, theres just nothing that has or is likely to come close to the master piece Uncharted 2. The PS3 continues to outshine the other consoles. This happens every gen. The comp gets their system out, floods the market with mediocre games while Sony takes its time. Shows it pays off. The PS2 is still selling like hotcakes 10 years after its release.
by superjay77 October 14, 2009 9:48 AM PDT
Maybe odst sucks to people who have not played it but to someone that is a proud owner I love it. I was lied to about Uncharted 2. I read a game informer article that said it would have online coop campaign. It did not. So I can wait till next year to get it. If you don't like Lost planet great for you. I loved the demo and cannot wait to play it through the campaign 4 player coop.
by Shinobi2099 October 14, 2009 10:26 AM PDT
@superjay77
Actually alot of people said ODST was lacking. ALOT of people. I'm not sure how you're happy with paying 60 bucks for an incomplete game. But hey it's cool. Just sying that Uncharted is WAAAAY better than ODST.
by superjay77 October 14, 2009 11:20 AM PDT
Who cares what other people think. Have you played the game. If not than your assesment of it sucking is invalid. I own the game I play the game. It's awesome. I don't care what people say. I never said that Uncharted 2 sucks because I never played the game. I just don't want to pay $60 for that type of game without coop through the campagin. I would pay $30 which is why I'm waiting for it to lower to $30. I can wait. I'll be pretty busy in the for now.
by Shinobi2099 October 14, 2009 11:37 AM PDT
Actually my friend brought it over to show me how good it was... the result? I put in the Uncharted demo and we played that the rest of the night lol. He didn't even think about Halo again lol. He actually wanted to leave his 360 and TAKE my PS3 just so he could play online some more. lol I am a true gamer.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 11:46 AM PDT
Superjay i have played the game. its just more Halo. $60 for and expansion of Halo. Lame..as for the co-op in Uncharted, there is online campaign co-op. its just not exactly the same as all the other co-op games have been this gen. Thats fine, if you dont like it, but i just cant see MYSELF paying $60 for subpar games like Lost Planet and expansions like ODST. MS has been making a killing off mediocrity and people like you continue to support it. no hard feelings. please dont take all this like im hating on you. im just making an observation.
by superjay77 October 14, 2009 11:49 AM PDT
So you don't like it great. I still love it. Nothing is going to change my opinion about how awesome it is. It is totally different than halo 3. Odst troopers play completlely different. I love it. If you don't great. You can't change someone's opinion with somebody else's opinion. Who cares about your friend. The more you try to change my opinion the later it makes me not want to get Uncharted 2. Maybe I won't buy it at all. Who knows.

Indeed, SONY needs more software to make the console more enticing. I think they will achieve this well in 2010 with help from exclusives like God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, White Knight Chronicles and to a lesser extent Final Fantasy XIV since not many will want to pay the subscription fees for this online multiplayer. Overall though, they should keep the momentum that began with the price drop going.

They will in due time. Theres no need to rush. It pays to take your time when creating new IPs and software especially this gen.

I do find it funny though, it took Naughty Dog 2 years to make Uncharted 2. One of the best games this gen, and its taking Squeenix 5+ years to create s multiplatform game thats looking to be another mediocre multiplat. It looks as though Squeenix downgraded to game to run "equally" on both consoles. Seems odd.
by October 13, 2009 2:37 PM PDT
I don't know if any one title can do it, but a string of good titles can shift perceptions. I think Sony had to make these moves to stay relevant and competitive, but I welcome the general direction Sony is finally heading with the PS3. As a consumer, I want the Big 3 console makers to compete hard for my dollar.

it was until MS opened their wallet and Squeenix came begging like the Prawns and cat food in Distirct 9.

Its still exclusive in Japan so its sure to move units. The demo alone moved over 600,000 PS3s in a week in Japan. Plus people are starting to notice the PS3 version will most llikely outshine the 360 version. Given the fact Squeenix focused all their efforts finishing up the PS3 version the porting it to the 360. Finally this gen, we get a multiplat that was made the PS3 1st then ported to the 360. Im tired of multiplat games this gen. They are all Xbox games.

FF13 versus is a PS3 exclusive
by kewell82 October 14, 2009 3:40 PM PDT
FF13 on the xbox has to use three or more discs to play the game, where as the PS3 only needs one disc thanks to Blu-ray technology.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 3:43 PM PDT
for now. ha! well see if Squeenix can say no to M$ when it comes time. I see why Squeenix would do this from a business stand point but they used to take more pride in their work then this. At least Agito XIII will for sure remain exclusive to Sony. Either way, FFXIII will still be worth my time and money. its Final Fantasy. Dissidia is suprisingly fun and good.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 3:49 PM PDT
you know whats a bummer. Since Square has to devide up on 3 or more discs, theres no more free roaming. In X and XII you could access any area at any point in the game. Not in XIII. because it has to be devided the game play will have to be made to where youll only be able to access certain areas depending on what disc your on. Since the the games are going to identical that format is going to be translated on the PS3 version as well. its lame.
by Absolution2009 October 14, 2009 4:52 PM PDT
@Jawknee1

Agito is the portable cell phone part of FF13, not Sony from my understanding. The Sony one is FF13 Versus, which looks wicked sick.
by Jawknee1 October 15, 2009 7:58 AM PDT
@Absolutions2009

Correction, It WAS a cell phone game. Not anymore. Its in development for the PSP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Agito_XIII#Development

Exclusive to Sony's PSP. I hope Versus XIII remains exclusive. Square said they wanted Advent Children like graphics for Vs XIII. Wont get there on the Xbox unless the games is only an hour long or 10 discs.

Sony is taking a step in the right direction. The price drop and games like Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Resistance 2 are pulling the PS3 from the bottom. I knew that Sony would eventually make a comeback in the console wars.

Considering Xbox360 will only have 4 exclusives this whole year, 2 halo games (one which is an expansion pack) L4D2 (another expansion pack) and Forza3 it is clearly the one that needs to step its game up and release 2-3 more excluvies this yr. Neither Halo games were AAA.
When all year a systems exclusive releases are 2 expansion packs and Halo game (milking the franchise) theres a problem., yet there is no article about this. Just an article downplaying Uncharted 2 and the other 5 AAA exclusives Sony released this yr

Are you insane??? You don't love the fact that Halo is being milked until it dies?????? I'm waiting for Halo 3: Sidescroller, Halo 3: Stealth Mission, Halo 3: Skateboarding, Halo 3: Racing, and Halo 3: RPG. And let's not even consider a Halo 4!!!!

lol CNET is on M$ payroll. Let's just speak the TRUTH beneath their attempt at journalism. I mean Uncharted has like 24 perfect scores in various magazines. Remember this is the same site that touted the PS3 Slim as a mere inconcievable rumor remember? LOL they are n00b journalists.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 9:25 AM PDT
MS jumped the gun and exhausted all their IPs before Sony even started. Just watch, the PS3 will be the next PS2 in terms of longevity. The 360 will be dead and gone intime. Just like how MS ditched the original Xbox. Sony knows what they are doing. This whole console war thing is stupid. Its also as if the whole flamebaiting internet nerd rage was started by MS and their loyal "game journalists" to drum up support for themselves and slander anyone who makes a better product. Notice how MS never talks up their Xbox. They only sling mud at Sony and Nintendo.
by x2142x October 14, 2009 6:15 PM PDT
@ FiREitUp913

I have a bone to pick with you. I am a 360 owner and I must completely disagree with your saying that Halo 3: ODST isn't a AAA title game. Halo 3: ODST was able to sell over 2 million copies in its first day. I think it is definitely worthy of AAA status. To put this in perspective for you Sony fanboys, that's more than Killzone 2's TOTAL sales, the game that was supposed to be the killer FPS for PS3. I think that's pretty good for what you call an "expansion pack"
BTW, Shinobi2099, considering how much CNET isn't on a Microsoft payroll considering how much they adore all things Apple. Also, the PS3 slim is only selling better because of the price drop. I mean, the new one is ugly as hell. I actually liked the first one as much as my Elite but the second one looks like crap.
by Shinobi2099 October 15, 2009 7:00 AM PDT
@x2142x

But you can get a 360 for the same price right? So why would ONLY the price drop affect the sales of the PS3? If your theory is correct, which it isn't, then at best the PS3 should be EQUAL to the sales of the 360 bc the only reason it's worth getting is because of the price drop... Thats a pretty lame excuse. You're a poor excuse for a 360 fan boy. lol nice try n00bster
by Jawknee1 October 15, 2009 8:02 AM PDT
2 million in one day. Source please? you people always throw these numbers out without a source. THE GAME IS ALSO ON THE PC! Stop inflating the numbers.
by x2142x October 15, 2009 6:33 PM PDT
@ Shinobi2099

Why would the price drop be the only reason sales spiked when the slim came out? Because nothing else happened during that month for the PS3! What did you think, that the PS3 would have had a sales increase if they introduced the slim at $400? If there's one thing i know about America, it's that money is everything. Second of all, why would the sales of the 360 and PS3 be equal because their both $300? You act as if I said that. Even with the price drop, the PS3 has a lot of catching up to do if it is to reach the sales of the 360. One year can make a big difference. If there's any "theory" in my statement, its that cheaper=more sales. I don't know where you got the fanboy part (or n00bster. What the hell is that supposed to mean?). I said I was a 360 owner, not a fanboy. I like the PS3's Blu-Ray player and I love Metal Gear Solid 4 so I will be getting one sooner or later. Don't accuse people of being fanboys, you just make yourself look like one.

@Jawknee1
I would never throw numbers out without a source. Here's two for your enjoyment. Between 1.8-2 million copies on one day and 2.2 million in a week (The funny thing is that only places ODST in fourth place for 360 games!)

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=5352
http://www.co-optimus.com/article/2672/Halo_3_ODST_Tops_Killzone_2s_Lifetime_Sales___In_24_Hours.html

By the way can you show me a source of ODST being on the PC? My friends who don't have a 360 would be thrilled to have a copy for PC.
by Shinobi2099 October 15, 2009 7:24 PM PDT
@x2142x

"Halo 3: ODST was able to sell over 2 million copies in its first day."

This is what you said initially. and now you're saying it was 2.2 mil in it's first week. Make up your mind silly man.
by pepsicola1216 October 16, 2009 10:57 AM PDT
Either way it took an "expansion pack" a week to sell over 2 million copies and it took KZ2 months
by Jawknee1 October 16, 2009 11:43 AM PDT
once again, just because something sells like hotcakes doesnt mean its worth your money.
by x2142x October 16, 2009 1:19 PM PDT
@ Shinobi2099

In my second comment I said anywhere between 1.8-2 million copies in the first 24 hours. Even if the exact number was 1.7 million, so what? That's amazing. And I have ODST and it's selling like hotcakes for a reason. Firefight is epic. Anyway, why are we talking about ODST? Uncharted looks like a good game and if they made a bundle of that with MGS4 I'm definitely buying a PS3.

"a new Ratchet & Clank doesn't quite cut it."

First of all R&C is one of Sony's biggest games, not to mention it is arguably the BEST platformer out. Did you play R&C: ToD? Obviously not because it's a Sony exclusive. So what if it's the 5th or 6th in the series, unlike Halo, the storyline is excellent and I can't wait to see how much more of Ratchet's mysterious past is revealed. Honestly the story is riveting, the voice acting supreme, it's funny, and fun to play. How can a new one be bad? How can you argue that it is not a good thing?

Second PS3 is known for it's first party platformers. Sly Cooper, Jak and daxter, and R&C are all supreme series. Look at all the articles that happened when there was a billboard in Infamous about Sly Cooper. Just one screenshot set off a wildfire of cries for Sly Cooper 4.

Third the only system that has better platformers is Nintendo. 360 definitely is lacking in that department.

Fourth Let's see out of M$ exclusives this year TWO were Halo RE-hashes. Please one of you comment on this pleeeaaase. I want to hear your reasoning as to why this was not pointed out as a flaw? But you put R&C in a negative light?

But I think everything will turn around when Atlas makes the jump from the PS2 to the PS3. Odinsphere 2 on PS3 anyone?

I cant answer the question in the article but what i can say is that the PS3 continues to outshine anything else on the market. Its exclusives just keep getting better and better. MGS4 was fantastic, then we got inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank. Then this. my goodness i didnt think a game could be as gorgeous as this one is. and WITH NO SCREEN TEARING!!! its wonderful. The 1st Uncharted was great but had mad screen tearing. they managed to make this game look 10 times better and fix all the technical glitches. Simply amazing title. This is a must player for all game lovers.

Next is Ratchet and Clank a Crack in Time, GT5 and Heavy Rain. Cant wait.

Shinobi2099, I totally agree with you. Ratchet and Clank is hands down one of the best series ever made, and to downplay it like Cnet did is wrong.
Another Ratchet and Clank game just doesn't cut it?!
Right, but Halo 3 60$ expansion pack does? or a spin off Halo Wars? Or another Halo next year? Or a system reaching its 5th yr still suffering from RRoD and massive failures?
Its totally good for MS to make expansion packs in 8-10 months and sell them for 60$ and put out 3 halo games in 2 years. But Insomniac releasing a top quality entry in the series every 2 years is not gonna cut it? I mean xbox360 does not even have a decent platformer period, oh yeah Kameo, a very average release title from 2005, thats it. Sony puts out its third (R$C, LBP) AAA platformer and xbox360 doesn't even have one decent platformer yet alone a AAA one and its Ratchet and Clank that doesn't cut it? Damn Cnet, how far is Microsoft's c*ck in your a$$?

Such a fanboy. Sony would love the sales from the Xbox exclusives, even when taking out Halo. The thing is that Xbox sells many more games than Sony does and that's the difference.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 3:40 PM PDT
oh stop it with the stupid fanboy accusations. you sound like a 10 year old. Notice the only ones starting the flame wars are you dolts who keep calling everyone Sony fanboys. Stop it! you discredit yourself when you do that.

You people act like MS had had success selling these games on the Xbox alone. Just about every single Xbox exclusive is also available on the PC so of course the total number for any certain game would be larger then Sony's true exclusives.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 4:22 PM PDT
Another thing, not all companies care about money more then their customers. Sony seems to care a great deal about what their fans want. They listen and then deliever. MS on the other hand just pumps out the game content over and over and over and know their fanbase will eat it up like a fatman and twinkys. Some take pride in their work while other just do it for the sake of profit. Of course Sony would love huge sales, but at what expense? at some point the public grows tired of mediocrity and will move on. MS may rake in tons of cash but they arent doing much with it except make more and more crap. Youd think with all the money they make, they would have found a solution to the RROD by now. Funny how Sony takes a lose on PS3 sales yet they still manage to support a reliable machine and have the funds to create AAA exclusives. Have fun playing your PC games and pathetic excuse for a next gen console. Since Sony has started pumping out all these AAA games i havent touched my Xbox. Think its time to retire it.

Actually no you can't. I'm sure most of those are great games but guess what? Halo outsells them all. Say what you want to say about it but as far as numbers go they don't compare. Once again, no you can't say domination

I love how the PS3 gamers keep listing the great exclusive titles, and the 360 owners keep boasting the sales of ODST. Let me say that Forza 3 is not as good as GT 5, because even prologue makes Forza 3 look like a prior-gen console release. Halo series, Left4Dead series, and Gears of War Series don't compare to Uncharted Series, InFamous, MGS:4, Killzone 2, God Of War 3, LittleBigPlanet, and MAG. (The game that will push gaming into the world spotlight). PS3 has blu-ray, FREE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER, and better reliability and hardware power. To the people who say XBox sells more games, that's because the console had a year's head start. Admit it, you wish you had been smart with your money and saved that year, still enjoying the prior generation console, and now owned the more exciting system, but since you screwed up, you will now stand by your mistake until you can't afford to replace yet another red ring of death victim.

Having beta tested MAG, I can tell you that game is going nowhere. It just doesnt get its formula right. Its an ambitious title for sure, but the core gameplay, you know, the shooting, isnt tight enough in the controls and not very satisfying. GT5 is going to look beautiful (whenever the hell it actually comes out) but will not be all that fun, neither will Forza 3. Pure racing sims never are. Now, DiRT 2 was fun.

Also, now being into hour 11 of Uncharted 2, I can easily say that its probably second in the ps3 catalog only to mgs4 in terms of being cinematic. It is damn near a masterpiece.

Of this list that you posted, 3D dot game heroes, agarest senki zero, atlier rorona, demon's souls, the last rebellion, MAG, gundam and x-edge all combined will not sell even close what ODST sold. You know why? Because ODST is a great game. I have ODST and have played through the campaign on Legendary. I have played and scored over 200K on each Firefight map. I have also played at least one Halo 3 multiplayer match on ONLY the 3 maps exclusive to ODST. Once YOU have done all that, count up all the hours and sweat and adrenaline pumped and tell me that it wasn't worth $60. If you did, you'd be lying.

Listen, I love my 360 more than my PS3 for one reason. I have to keep trying to justify my purchase of the ps3 and not a standalone bluray player because of the exclusives only 3 in 3 years are system sellers (mgs, killzone, uncharted2) and all the other games that are also on 360, play better on 360. Also, lets face it, the 360 controller is FAR SUPERIOR to the ps3's. The only advantage the dual shock has is the d-pad which is really only beneficial in 2D fighting games. If you dont agree with me here, then think back to one of the best controllers of all time, the Dreamcast controller and see which of the 360 or ps3 more closely resembles it.

My last point here: Arguably the biggest game for either console this generation (in terms of actual game quality and sales) will be Modern Warfare 2. That game will decide which console is winning this war. I am willing to bet my prestige edition game and custom modern warfare 2 edition xbox 360 super elite on the fact that this game will sell many more copies on the xbox. You know who else is betting on that? Infinity Ward. Why else would they partner with xbox on so many different projects and exclusives? If you say money, then you would be right my friend. Money talks. The video game industry is a business after all.
by ryancordero October 15, 2009 1:38 AM PDT
@java when people quote 360's bigger sales figures, they are saying that the xbox STILL to this day sells more games PER CONSOLE than SONY does. They arent talking overall sales because yes that would be skewed because of the head start. To nullify the head start you can focus simply on the multiplatform titles sales of which the 360 has more.

Moving on:
Having beta tested MAG, I can tell you that game is going nowhere. It just doesnt get its formula right. Its an ambitious title for sure, but the core gameplay, you know, the shooting people part, isnt tight enough in the controls and not very satisfying. People who call other people noobs for being good at a game they arent is just plain stupid. I love how people say Call of Duty games are for noobs, yet they are the ones getting their ***** handed to them. If the game is so easy to be great at, and you are so great, then you should still be above and beyond the noobs! But you arent, so maybe YOU are the noob. Maybe you will be one of the best people playing MAG next year, but being the best of 100K people isnt the same as being the best of 10million.

GT5 is going to look beautiful (whenever the hell it actually comes out) but will not be all that fun, neither will Forza 3. Pure racing sims never are. Now, DiRT 2 was fun.

@ryancordero

You make no sense. Why would MW2 decide the console war? When have multi platform games ever decided the war? Lol EPIC PHAIL

@java
Thank you, you see my point. We have a slew of exclusives that will all be good in their own right. No1 can deny this. But if I recall there are 10 mil on Halo or something like this... ODST only sold what? 5 mil? So only HALF of the current Halo playes felt it was worthy enough to purchase? And thats a success? I thought the next game was supposed to bring MORE fnas to the table... Like Uncharted 2 is doing right now. Wow. Great job guys. Next thing M$ fans will be paying 60 bucks for a gun in halo with ACTUAL recoil. LOL Halo attracts the 75% of people who sucked at every other FPS out there. It's a shooter for n00bs and I myself would rather build my skill than play a nerf'd out game. All these halo fans shouting MW2 will probably suck at that game seeing as it has recoil.
"OMG why isn't my gun staying still?????"
LOL

@ JavaEEdev You're right the Xbox exclusives don't compare, they all crushed Sony exclusives in sales. As for the year head start thing what does that have to do with how well a game sells? From what I hear most beta testers are saying MAG ain't all that but maybe it will be good. Why do people keep bringing up RROD. Please stop using that tired ass excuse. I have bought 3 360's none of them have RROD and 2 are originals. When is the last time someone complained about RROD?

@Shinobi
You are proving yourself ignorant.
1. Ryan is only stating that the creator of the game feels that MW2 will sell better on the 360.
2. You obviously tried halo sucked at it and decided you didn't want to be made fun of so you went to CoD.
I play both and I can tell you CoD is much easier to be good at. In CoD 5 my best weapon is Mp40 and that has the most recoil, guess what? I still own with it. My highest kill streak in CoD is 32, if you could do that in Halo at a high level than you're beast. Fact is most people can't.
3. Most hardcore halo players play for the online. A big part of the ODST is that it includes all the map packs, chances are over 5 mil Halo players have already bought the map packs. Also you are comparing sales of a game that has been out for nearly 2 years to one that just came out... nice one. And as f for the whole unchartered 2 brining in way more people, maybe its because almost no one bought the first one.
by Shinobi2099 October 16, 2009 3:09 PM PDT
@pepsicola1216
*MUTE* I'm done listening to your nonsense. Lol I didn't suck at halo it was TOO easy. It's a n00b shooter just face the truth. And for the record I don't play COD either... It's too arcade like. I prefer SOCOM. That takes reak skill. In MW whatever map I played I was always in the TOP 3. Nice try tho lol.
by pepsicola1216 October 16, 2009 4:34 PM PDT
Was it nonsense because every point actually made sense. I love how every time I make a valid argument all you sony fanboys fail to disprove me. You just call me dumb and fail to back up your claims. And no SOCOM does not take skill. I rented the game and its not worth it

No one can touch the sales of New Super Mario Bros DS (Wii version coming out nov 15), it has outsold any ps2, 360,ps3, psp, heck even mario kart wii has done that (global sales). Mario, Link, Samus, Snake> halo or uncharted.
U all know galaxy was game of the year, this year new super mario bros wii, next year galaxy 2 lol.
by Carrick1973 October 14, 2009 10:56 AM PDT
So for anyone who's played both Uncharted games - do I need to play the first to enjoy the second as much, or is it a total new story with the same character?

Sony's finally in the game at least. They just need to add some additional online content streaming via an update, and I'd be happy. NetFlix, where are you?

you dont have to but i suggest you do. its a great game on its own. The only thing you might miss if you dont is the knowledge characters from the 1st. The storys dont connect in such a way were you wouldnt understand. think of them like Indiana Jones flicks.

So if you play U2 and not U1 you just wont get the connection some of the characters have but other then that you wont miss out on anything importent. But again, play U1 if you can. its a great game and U2 just raises that bar.
by Absolution2009 October 14, 2009 3:25 PM PDT
I would play U1 first because there's a cute story on the first one brought to the 2nd one that makes this movie/game entertaining and fun to watch while you play. Not necessary but better background.
by ryancordero October 15, 2009 1:41 AM PDT
you should definitely play uncharted 1 just cuz its a great game. also, naughty dog give you a nice little bonus for finishing it when you play uncharted 2.
by jdwgtak October 14, 2009 11:29 AM PDT
to that dude complaining about online co-op,are you serious?your not going to buy one of THE best games ever because it doesnt have online co-op?i downloaded the demo the first day it came out because i didnt believe all this hype could turn out good(rings a bell fromt he first killzone on ps2)BUT,it is literally the only game i have been playing and its only a demo ffs,it is amazingly fun,the best looking game i have ever seen and it plays perfect...so seriously,buy the game [CNET editors' note: Personal attacks deleted.]

i agree that its a bad reason not to buy a game but dont call names. it diminishes the impact of your arguement.
by sav1981 October 14, 2009 11:46 AM PDT
Uncharted 2 is not going to help put Sony to the top by itself this year but I think eventually Sony will be back on top. One reason is as we all know is Bluray. Ipod owners or any owners of portable media device loves the fact that most Bluray movies come with a digital copy of the movie itself thus is a better deal than dvds. Also Bluray movies and players are becoming more affordable. The PS3 still has the best value and most reliable Bluray player out there. Don't believe me, then go buy a Samsung or LG model and pray that both work straight out the box. The second reason Sony will be back on top is its games. Uncharted 2 is the beginning of a fresh start for Sony, but titles like Demon's Soul, God of War 3, Jak and Daxter are all worth owning. Don't forget Grand Turismo 5. Forza Motorsport 3 may be great but it won't outsell GT5 especially in Japan and Europe. Fanboys don't hate, I'm only expressing my opinion.

thats true. i love getting a digital copy of the blue ray movies i buy. take them with me on my PSP or iPhone.

GT5 Prologue sold more then Forza 2 and GT5 Prologue has already been declared superior to Forza 3 in many ways. Not all but many. GT5 is going to blow Forza 3 away.
by Absolution2009 October 14, 2009 3:26 PM PDT
Demon's Soul was a surprising game. I didn't expect a game like that to come out at all but between Uncharted 2 and Demon's Soul, I'm struggling to stick to one of them.
by Jawknee1 October 14, 2009 3:53 PM PDT
im still a little skeptical of Demon Souls. hmmmmmmmmmm.....should i or should i not.....
by ryancordero October 15, 2009 1:47 AM PDT
dvd's started the digital copy trend and its not exclusive to blu-ray. as a matter of fact only recently have companies even begun to put that digital copy onto the blu-ray itself. It used to be stored on a separate dvd in the package. Talk about ironic. Also, yes, the PS3 was far and away the best Bluray player available for a long time, but not anymore. There are some bluray players that surpass the ps3 in pic quality (Oppo for one) and others in features (can you say Netflix?) I will just remind you that the Xbox 360 has had Netflix for awhile now.

You sony guys keep mentioning all these games that havent come out yet, which makes me wonder, what can you have possibly been playing for the past 3 years? You can only play mgs and killzone for so long.
by Shinobi2099 October 15, 2009 7:05 AM PDT
@ryancordero
Yeah are you're 360 side sounds soooo interesting... Halo this, Halo that. What PS3 is tying to convey is that we are not trying to outsell halo. We don't care how many copies Halo sells honestly. We have DIVERSITY among our exclusives is what we are saying. And if you did combine everything, we might not beat out halo but I bet we having way more fun.
by TheHBK23 October 14, 2009 4:35 PM PDT
Yeah its not enough, they needed one more game to put them over. The 360 has ODST and forza coming out too. A crack in time? Gimme a break...or break in time...whatever, you are not going to win people over on what is now a mediocre franchise with gimmicks and lame titles.
I love uncharted 2 and has renewed my faith in my PS3 being more than my Blu Ray player. They need an amazing exclusive RPG that is not some lame piece of junk from Japan. Something on the scale of mass effect. Dragon Age is coming but thats on the PC and 360 also.

This is one of the dumbest articles I've seen on Cnet this year. Not only does this completely overlook Infamous, Demon's Souls and Killzone 2, but it claims that Uncharted 2 is simply playing "catch up" by matching Halo OSDT. That in and of itself, invalidates the entire article.

The PS3 lineup has outperformed the gaming catalogue of the 360 and Wii over the past 2 years. What does the 360 or Wii have that significantly outshines MGS4 and LBP as far as gaming quality? And the worst part of this article is that the PS3 is showing no signs of doing anything but continuing that trend with things like FFIV, GT5 and possibly The Agent and The Last Guardian on slate for next year.

Take the idiot rant onto a subject with more credibility.

I think what the author was saying is that, based on previous history, that PS3 titles do not sell near as many copies as the 360 games, exclusives or third party. Yell all you want about the great games that Sony has, but the problem is that those games don't sell near as well as 360 titles. He's saying that Sony needs a blockbuster game that sells, If the games from the PS3 were better in the last two years then it should have sold a ton of games, but that hasn't been the case.
by Jawknee1 October 15, 2009 8:13 AM PDT
once again, vertually all 360 exclusives are also on the PC. Not one of the PS3's exclusives are on the PC.
by FIREitUP913 October 14, 2009 5:17 PM PDT
I feel ya man, Ps3 has been outselling and outperformoring xbox for awhile now. All xbox360 has now is expansion packs. GTA expansion pack, Halo Expansion pack, L4D expansion pack....
Ps3 puts out 6 exclusives this yr, 5 of which are AAA, and this is the article we get? How about an article about how MS should really fix RRoD when it still happens 5 yrs into the life of the system, or how about an article about how MS is in trouble because in 2009 all they released was basically expansion packs while ps3 dropped many AAA gems 2 of which (Uncharted 2 and Killzone2) push graphics and gameplay to a new level. Or how about an article detailing the ACTUAL cost of xbox360 because once you pay for a few yrs online, wifi and other way overpriced add ons the xbox360 price jumps to 600$ +.... ahhh Cnet, riding that Microsoft c*ck like true champions.

First, the 360 has not been around for 5 years.....what, did you get a system a year before it came out? Secondly, why do an article on the problems with 360 games being in trouble when more games are sold on the xbox than the PS3.
by October 15, 2009 1:07 AM PDT
5 AAA PS3 exclusives this year? You're kidding, right?

InFamous got an average score of 85. That's a B-rated game at best. Killzone 2 and Demon's Souls are borderline at 91 and 90 respectively. (Not that it matters for Demon's Souls since nobody is buying it. Killzone 2 dropped off the sales charts months ago.)

The only AAA rated exclusive on the PS3 so far is Uncharted 2 and it just came out yesterday.
by dgrumich October 15, 2009 7:40 AM PDT
Could not have said it better myself. That's not fanboy rant either, that's all truth.
