A quick sneak peek at Dell's new Adamo design.

At a press conference to show off new licensed laptop lid designs from Major League Baseball and nail polish brand OPI, Dell teased the audience with a brief peek at the new design for its high-end Adamo laptop.

The system, purported to be only 9.99 millimeters thick, was previously hinted at with a single-shot teaser Web site launched by Dell in September. This time around, Dell VP Alex Gruzen pulled one of the new Adamo systems from a laptop sleeve and, keeping the lid closed, held it aloft for a few seconds before handing it off to be spirited away.

Also onhand were two new partnerships for customizable laptop lids on Dell systems. The Dell Design Studio will offer MLB designs for all 30 teams, with "Fan, Classic, and Die-Hard" versions available. Concurrently, OPI, a leading nail lacquer brand, will offer "26 exciting, high-style OPI fashion shades," as laptop lid design options. On top of that, Dell is adding another 80 designs from artists from around the world to the options available when customizing a laptop.

In keeping with Dell's current premiums for custom lids on most of its laptops, these new designs add $85 to the cost. Basic single-color lids are still an extra $40.

We managed to snap a few photos of the elusive new Adamo's brief appearance--check them out in the gallery below.

Woah, that is really thin! Great article Dan!

By the way, lots of us in VA miss your segments on the Big O and Dukes show on 106.7 FM. I wish they never switched formats.

GMU- I'm a long time junks listener and listened to BO&D as well. The new format, while great for local sports fans, simply isnt as entertaining. Oh well....

Thanks, Big O & Dukes was always fun to do, especially as I started out as a radio DJ myself. It's not quite the same, but we do a radio-style 30-minute podcast live every Monday at 3pm EST at http://live.cnet.com, or you can stream it later at http://digitalcity.cnet.com. --dan

No offense Dan, but until we know specs; price, processor, due date, battery life etc. this is as pointless as an article about the Apple tablet. The pics should appear on Crave but it's not worthy of an article on cnet's home page.

Bro...its a spotting...its like seeing a new prototype of a car or something...just because there are no specs doesnt mean its not nice to see the actual laptop.
by mavfan2 October 7, 2009 6:23 PM PDT
I agree, I just don't think it's worthy of being an article with a link on cnet's front page. put it on cnet's own tech blog, crave.cnet.com Right now there are articles for new windows 7 Sony laptops on crave that have actual information about the computers, and we get a picture of a guy holding an Adamo that may well have been an empty shell as he didn't even open it.
by renGek October 8, 2009 11:03 AM PDT
Well Dell held a press conference. And its not like your run of the mill looking laptop so its news worthy. Do you also think all the windows 7 article until oct 22 should not be more than some slides. Journalists are suppose to report what they find.
by mavfan2 October 8, 2009 4:56 PM PDT
gah! "journalists are supposed to report what they find" Yeah, so what did they find? a guy holding what could be nothing more than a piece of metal. Again, cnet should have posted a blurb about this on their crave.cnet.com blog, now this total non-story is one of their top 5? WTH? If Dell have given any specifications whatsoever then I could see cnet covering it as more of a real story but what did we learn about the Adamo from that story that we didn't already know from the teaser pic that came out weeks ago. Bupkuss, that's what. I don't know who is responsible for promoting this story on cnet's site up to one of it's top 4 or 5, Dan Ackerman's title is Senior Editor, but it seems everyone at cnet is a Senior Editor so maybe a Grand Pooba Editor promoted this story. Hey, I like Dell, I have a XPS 1530, a mini 9 a XPS 420 desktop and I've had others. This isn't anti-Dell it's anti non-story.

I think it is great that they managed to cramp all that into only 9.99 mm..but seriously, what's the point?

It`s like the Mac book Air...except it is thinner , has more ports , and has better hardware for the money.
I know Mac people who want this.

Those OPI designs...look a lot nicer than I'd like to admit. I wonder if they have an appropriate shiny lacquer to them.

I'm sure it will be expensive, but I'm also sure there are people out there who will buy it., even in the current economic climate. Dell better pack it with a high-zooter CPU and memory to help justify the cost.

I'm thinking the keyboard is going to be terrible, just like the keyboard on the Mac Air (my opinion, of course). I can't stand typing on keyboards with little or no tactile feedback. However, more and more people are getting comfortable using keyboards with no feedback - such as touch-screen keyboards. It's just not for me.

Definitely cool, though. I'd probably lose it in between the sofa cushions.

These photographs give an unrealistic view of this laptop. I recommend: < http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/news/2009/10/08/Dell-Teases-Thinnest-Laptop-to-Date/p1 >

The screen, unlike most laptops, does not use traditional corner hinges, nor does it span the length/width of the laptop body. It uses an interesting new hinge design which will most likely limit the range of the screen's tilt motion.

I predict that this laptop will be way too costly, and be completely underpowered.
I predict another failure on Dell's part.

Why not just get a Mac book Air? Mac is much better.

In what way? In the way that the Air is thicker, has less decent hardware, has less ports, and paying for service packs?

Fine point their sir.....

What about graphics card in the new Adamo XPS? if it will come with that crappy Intel graphics card then there will be reason to sell my current Adamo :)

OK - SO - Dell Can Build a Mac Book-Air in a Windows Format - GREAT - so has Apple should one choose to own a "Dual Boot" MacBook. I have an Acer Windows "Mojave" Laptop. It is as well Dual Boot - "Mojave" OR Ubuntu "Jaunty Jackelope." Given a choice - I would prefer OS-X to be my THIRD CHOICE.
Windows and Linux are for all intents and purposes -UBIQUITOUS!- Meaning for all intents and purposes, Every Where for free or almost free, Apple is still PROPRIETARY! So much for "PEACE, LOVE and all the Other "BS." That is All.

As with the Air - there is not reason to want this other than status. Other than it's thin size - the bang for buck specs are typically the worst you can get.
