Nokia N97 Mini clears FCC
Nokia N97 Mini
(Credit: Nokia)Nokia's recently announced N97 Mini passed through the FCC this week along with what could be an update to the line. Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. And to save you the trouble, Crave has combed through the database for you. Here are a selection of filings from the past week on new and upcoming cell phones. Click through to read the full report.

I have personally played with N97 in NY store.
The N97 is a GSM phone. In the United States, neither of the 2 GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile) carry the N97, nor any of the Nokia "N90" series of smartphones these past few years. Even the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is nowhere to be found in the US, except online. I'm sure that if Nokia really wanted to, they could strike a deal with AT&T and T-Mobile, but that hasn't happened. It makes you wonder what Nokia is thinking...
I am sure that there is a particular reason why Nokia (and virtually every other non US based manufacturer) don't have deals with the US carriers for their top phones. Probably because the US carriers are so greedy. They want to sell a feature phone for $200+ and then lock you up for 2 !!! years on a plan that's $90-$100+ and pocket everything they can get to. And we are talking for 6-10 months old phones too. Ridiculous. In Europe you get phones like N97,5800, Samsung Jet, Omnia II, Omnia HD, Pixon M8910, Lg Arena, etc, for free on launch with 18 months plans. I personally have bought every phone of mine (currently have Nokia N95 8GB) unlocked, because I like the freedom of choosing my plans and my carriers as I please.I could switch to prepaid tomorrow if I needed to. People keep saying that spending $500-$750 for a phone is a lot, but with the price comes the benefit of freedom. And I like it.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THAT IN US THERE ARE ANTITRUST ISSUES AND THERE IS A REASON WHY NOKIA HAS 70% OF THE MARKET IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES WHERE YOU CAN BUY PHONES OFF THE SHELF AND ONLY 3% IN US WHERE EVERYTHING IS IN THE HANDS OF CARRIERS WHO CAN TWIST QOS AS THEY LIKE.
LET ALONE THE DECEIVING MARKETING CERTAIN COMPANIES ARE PERFORMING IN AGREEMENT WITH CARRIERS.
JUST COMPARE A N900 WITH AN IPHONE AND SMILE TO THE MARKETING NEXT TIME YOU SEE IT.
