The worst Microsoft promo videos ever!

You've created the Facebook event, filled your freezer with prawn elbows and no-frills champagne, and gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that Sandra in HR didn't find out. It's time for a party! A Windows 7 party!

The Internet has been abuzz with mirth over Microsoft's latest marketing wheeze. Windows 7 is launching on October 22, and Microsoft is inviting you to throw a knees-up to celebrate, with a series of videos handing out tips to make your bash go with a bang.

Microsoft eschews such conventional party-planning tips as seating guests boy/girl/boy/girl, choosing a fun fancy dress theme, and hiding your valuables in the garage. Instead, a Windows 7 party will feature such treats as an overview of the new operating system's exciting features.

In the words of one of Microsoft's shameless Gap-clone shills, "In a lot of ways, you're just throwing a party with Windows 7 as an honored guest." Party on. But it's not the first time that a Microsoft video has drawn hoots of derision from anyone with half a brain: we at Crave UK have collected 16 of our favorite visual howlers from the boys and girls at Redmond.

Hosting a Windows 7 party

This party has everything: the scripted laughter, the palpable sense of 30 years of tension between the bossy alpha blonde and the grandmother, and the moment at 1:20 where you can actually see the guy on the left's soul die.

Entertaining the guests at your Windows 7 party

We identify with Toby, the guy at the back who thought he was out for a few beers and a chance to stare at the pretty girl on the left, but has instead found himself hanging out with perma-grinning rejects from the Stepford branch of Abercrombie and Fitch, who say things like, "Just for kicks, look what happens when I right-click on IE!"

YO MS Raps! MS-DOS 5

This was an internal sales training video. Sub-"Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" couplets such as, "Everyone who's 'in' knows / it's the best DOS to run with Windows," "Graphical shell -- do tell!" and "Microsoft said 'Hear this rhyme / We'll test the upgrade -- big time!'" prove one thing: Microsoft thinks its staff are idiots. "Everybody DOS now!"

Entertaining--in Spanish

Dubbing is funny. We especially enjoyed the seedy chuckles. And now you know the Spanish for, "Just for kicks, look what happens when I right-click on IE!" for the next time you find yourself hosting an impromptu late-night minibar party in Magaluf.

Windows 98

In this odd take on "The X-Files" and "Mission: Impossible"--with the budget of "The Chuckle Brothers"--one e-mail takes five minutes to send, but then he has spammed everyone in the entire world. What happens if you do send an e-mail to everyone@global.com? The universe collapses in on itself, probably. You might want to skip straight to 4.35 for the hi-NRG remix.

Lock up your daughters

Our favorite bit is when Alpha Mom singles out unfit mom Susan and her juvenile delinquent Ashley.

Office XP

We expected Clippy to pop up and cheerfully announce, "It looks like you're trying to get your end away!" Anyway, that's enough sexy time--here's an old lady to calm you down.

Microsoft 1994

And if that didn't banish any sexy thoughts, this will definitely do the trick (unless you have a fetish for Uncle Fester).

Steve Ballmer sells Windows 1.0

Another internal video. We'd buy Steve Ballmer's used-car-salesman schtick way more if he didn't seem on the verge of tears.

Steve Ballmer sells Windows XP

Illustrating the Microsoft policy that if something works, do it again but as rubbish, Windows XP was promoted with this altogether more knowing take on the previous ad.

Microsoft Vista SP1

Bruce ServicePack and the Vista Street Band sing the praises of a Vista service pack for business clients. "When they see the improvements in security / the desktop and mobility / and productivity..." they'll be sold. "And if they're not sold yet / Diagnostic and recovery toolset!"

Windows 95

More proof that Microsoft thinks its target audience is idiots. Although we did enjoy the scattershot approach to stereotypes.

Da SBS Code

Completely the wrong side of knowing, this spoof of "The Da Vinci Code" makes us want to beat ourselves to death with a copy of "Angels and Demons."

Songsmith

This was another viral classic not so long ago. Our favorite is the passive/aggressive Dad: "When did you learn music?" Rated S for songtastic, mainly for the look of horror on the ladyboss' face at 3:21.

Windows 386

This would be gloriously bonkers if it didn't take longer than copying a file in Windows 98. An interminable "Mission: Impossible" pastiche takes a turn for the hatstand as the lead character's clear mental health problems manifest themselves in a wacky rap and suddenly dressing like Hazel O'Connor's wig wrangler.

You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here

We don't know about you, but our parties don't wind down until we crawl into Wetherspoons for an $8 Sunday roast, only to discover it's Tuesday. Next time we're attempting to mop complete strangers off our sofa, we'll remember this sure-fire way of clearing the party: "You don't have to leave right now, but before you do I want to show you the Windows help and how-to page." Is that the time? We'd best be off, big day tomorrow, last train to catch... run!

You have a good point. People watching your ad videos generally = bonus. .....Except for the part where those five or six of us who actually still had respect for Microsoft get to watch it swirl down the toilet in vague embarrassment. Come on, I wasn't the only one who nearly cried at the MS-DOS rap...and I -liked- the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Jesus, I think is not so much how bad microsoft adverts where/are; its also how much the business has change in this last decade. Seems like a million years of advancement.

The promo could be a joke and just a way of making people talk about Windows 7. Microsoft has created joke ads before, remember the one with the "MS iPod"?
by lil-yankee September 25, 2009 4:43 PM PDT
Well yeah, i'm not judging whether or not Microsoft has a good ad business or so, is just that take if you take a look at those comercials (meaning the way they handled tv before, and the technology) they seem like light years ago.
Hard to believe it has only been 30 or so years since it was a white monitor and a big cpu with less power than todays ipods.

Yawn. Gee, ya really, really tried Rich. Maybe do an anti-apple post next ... maybe somebody will get all hot and bothered and start a flame war. Then you can point to how much interactivity your blog has. Of course, the irony is rife. A blog which talks about how lame MS ads are (no doubt) looks like a self-referencing metaphor for crave when contrasted withengadget or gizmodo.

I'm also a fan (of the badness) of the Wes Moss Zune ads. There are lots of great reasons to own a Zune Pass, but none of them are elaborated on in the ad, and the guy just comes off as a toolbox.

If you don't already hate MS you must now, surely. These videos (I only managed a little of each) gives me the same creepy feeling as having dinner at my aunt's place. Big effing nerdy fake smile YAWN! I happily work an MS machine - it does what it does and mostly does it well. But oh, its all so dorky.

RIP Vista. (Re-boot in Peace)

Considering these are largely internal videos meant to be shown .. guess where... internally, and not to the general public, having them poke fun at the product and having a silly time at it is rather appropriate. It's called parody.

Some of these ads are really dated, and kinda neat to see as well.

But to be fair, let's have you collect a bunch of Apple ads as well, including internal only videos and post them here for comparison.

Hey genius, if they are meant to be shown 'internally' then why are the spread all over the internet like monkey feces at the local zoo? Man, you will DEFEND anything, won't you?
by wolivere September 25, 2009 10:44 AM PDT
@the_happy_switcher

Because people who are in sales or PD made copies and posted them for fun?

Back in the old days when I worked at Computerland and Microage, I sat through many of these Internal Promo videos not only from MS, but Apple Compag, Segate, HP....etc...etc...etc Back then Novell has some of the better ones.

Although I believe some of these also made it to Trade Shows. I remember working one trade show, I was demoing some Manufacturing control software, it ran on SCO Xenix on a IBM AT 8mhz 286 with 16 dumb terminals.

The booth next door was an Imoega Booth and they were showing off Bernoulli drives, they had this music blasting all day with disco lights. Dead or Alive you spin me round, then they actually had a promo guy dressed up like him. *shudders*

God I had a massive headache.. or the Old Comdex shows and the Vids from there?

People today just don't remember well the old days.

@The_Happy_Switcher:

It's not uncommon for internal videos, emails, and other material to leak out. It's called the INTERNET.

Perhaps you've heard of it? :)

Perhaps it only takes us 'geniuses' to realize the obvious. :)
by Yelonde September 25, 2009 5:36 PM PDT
Vegaman_Dan, why did you even have to pull apple into the fray? I thought that this particular cnet post was centered around microsoft ads. The only reason anyone would want to talk about apple in a microsoft topic would to be start a flame-war. I suppose that is what you are trying to do, right?
by Splashes September 25, 2009 5:52 PM PDT
Yes, VD will defend anything. As if it matters that some of these were intended to be "internal". The fact is, Microsoft has associated themselves with cheesy promos for decades. As Steve Jobs said back in 1996, "The only problem with Microsoft is, they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don't mean that in a small way; I mean that in a big way." And that was *before* he saw the Songsmith video [gag].

Oh yeah, VD, let's see you reconcile these two statements of yours:
1) Can't blame Microsoft -- internal videos are bound to be leaked to the Internet.
2) Apple has stupid internal videos too, we just haven't seen them yet.
by n3rdh3rd3r September 25, 2009 10:55 PM PDT
Actually these ads were not "internal". The newest ones are posted at House Party as a guide for those invited to the Windows 7 launch party. Yes I am a dork, but hey, free Win 7 for hosting. While I have no problems introducing people to new products, I can't imagine I'll have a perma-smile like a certain male enhancement character that came to mind while I tried to watch these vids. :)
by The_happy_switcher September 25, 2009 10:19 AM PDT
If these ads aren't proof that Microsoft as a company has lost its collective mind I don't know what is.

by The_happy_switcher September 25, 2009 11:15 AM PDT
Cleary, you've got reading comprehension problems. Go back to the 5th grade.
by Vegaman_Dan September 25, 2009 12:06 PM PDT
@The_happy_switcher:

Your comments are pretty much all negative and condescending in a childish and immature manner towards all things Microsoft. You spend your time here on CNET complaining and whining as opposed to doing something positive and useful.

Your handle of being 'The_happy_switcher' would suggest your life is one of happiness and rainbows, yet you focus your being on being a hateful and negative person. That contradicts the username entirely.

Reading comprehension should include your own username, yes?

if you have been posting positive things on CNET, then it would appear that readers have missed them. Care to point folks to your happier moments when you were not criticizing, complaining, or mocking others or subjects?
by kormiko September 25, 2009 10:30 AM PDT
I feel bad.

This Windows 7 promo for the "hosting parties" tries so hard to be politically correct as to not offend anyone, and yet it still magically does. Are we sure the two women aren't robots?

The 2nd promo isn't as bad, but no party is going to be like that with balloons and people gathering around a laptop. It's going to be ... "Hey, come over and have some drinks, play with Windows 7 for a minute or so, then have more drinks." Free copy!! Of course, MS would be happy with anyone just showing up.

There is no gay native american midget represented in these ads! I am shocked by the blatant disrepect of political correctness!
by DMBoricua September 25, 2009 10:34 AM PDT
Haha, how come I've never seen these commercials EVER on TV? Oh, they're too corny to watch.

I think only one of those was actually a TV ad. All the rest are from Trade Shows, training, marketing to partners....etc.
by The_happy_switcher September 25, 2009 10:39 AM PDT
So of you clam this is 'parody.' Well, as far as I know parody is usual clever, funny and entertaining. This fails epically on all fronts.

by Vegaman_Dan September 25, 2009 11:15 AM PDT
The instructional video was not parody- it was an instructional video with all the wit and excitement of a paper bag- pretty much the same for any instructional video on any subject in any industry.

Parody- oh yea, some of these are rife with it. Perhaps you might need to actually view them before making comments. If you did view them and still feel this way, then you missed the point and may need to hit up the dictionary for the definition of the term.

You haven't answered the question I've asked time and time again... why do you have the username of 'The_happy_switcher" when all you do is complain and whine here on CNET? That doesn't sound very happy at all to me. Is this meant to be an ironic username instead?
by The_happy_switcher September 25, 2009 11:19 AM PDT
I don't need to hit up anything, buckwheat. I'm sure my vocabulary is probably double the size of yours.
by Vegaman_Dan September 25, 2009 12:12 PM PDT
The size of one's vocabulary is not relevant to this subject matter. Your failure to address the comments say far more than you may realize. The fact that you do not realize this and sustain your self delusions tend to suggest there may be some other cause for the repeated retorts of fallicy.

I'm sorry that you do not quite understand the gist of this, but am willing to keep in mind that you appear to not have quite reached the '5th grade' level of comprehension, as you so delightfully have attributed my own skillset to. Such aspirations are notable indeed, my good colleague. I trust that you will advance to such a level in the near future and exceed it readily.
by n3rdh3rd3r September 26, 2009 12:40 AM PDT
I'm not wanting to get into Vega and happy's entertaining banter/psychoanalysis...and I'm not taking sides here...But happy switcher may just be transferring aggression. Size may have more to do with this than you know Vega. After all 'switcher'; i.e. : toggle switch. 'Happy' may just be an attempt to mask this aggression. So go lightly on him Vega. Oh...I hope my attempt at parody isn't too misplaced. ;)
by mde215 September 27, 2009 11:22 AM PDT
Dan I think the happy hooker, erm, I mean switcher, just has a bit of OS envy, and perhaps buyers remorse. Windows 7 even in the release candidate is fast, rock solid and yes innovative.

Mac does have some clever commercials and marketing campaign, no question about that. I supposed you'd have to in order to get people to pay twice as much for hardware and an OS that does far less.

Those aren't Windows 7 promo videos, those are host help videos for the Windows 7 launch party, the houseparty.com. Are the Win7 party advice vids goofy? Sure. Is the whole idea of throwing a party for a new operating system goofy? Absolutely.

Am I throwing one? You bet.

I'm not taking it seriously. It's more of a lame excuse for me to get together with my friends and drink. Besides, I'm getting that "Signature" copy of Win7 (and a bunch of tote bags!). How can you beat that?
