Xbox 360 Elite drops to $250 (with mail-in rebate)

Microsoft is offering a $50 mail-in rebate on the Elite through October 5.

Nobody likes a mail-in rebate, but if you're the patient type who doesn't mind waiting to get your cash back on your purchase, Microsoft will send you $50 if you buy the Xbox 360 Elite between now and October 5 (this is for U.S. customers only).

While you'll have to fill out all the requisite paperwork to get the discount, that mail-in rebate drops the price of the Elite--which only a short time ago cost $400--down to $250. Details of the rebate are here.

As other blogs have pointed out, that $50 might come in handy to buy an HDMI cable, Wi-Fi adapter, or a game. All we can say is, thank you, Sony, for dropping the price of the PS3 to $299. There's nothing like a good price war to keep things interesting in the game-console space.

MS must have noticed that people are choosing to upgrade the $200 XBox 360 Arcade; which has the newer Jasper chip set and more flash; rather than purchase the older, bundled consoles.

Nice sarcasm. By the way what games does Xbox have beside Halo, Gears, and Fable 2............Anyone?
by Absolution2009 September 22, 2009 4:30 PM PDT
Xbox 360 doesn't have many good exclusive games compared to Sony only because Sony has been in the entertainment industry way longer than Microsoft. I love my Xbox don't get me wrong, but Sony definitely has a huge edge over what you said eltoro.

I stress the word "good" and well-known because last time I said that someone decided to be a ****** and copy paste games that nobody even knows about on both consoles with wikipedia.
by September 22, 2009 6:49 PM PDT
you are a smart guy because you know the definition of a console. are there good games on it ?
why would you buy a console with no game on it?
weak online gaming.
by myfriend123 September 22, 2009 9:03 PM PDT
ps3 is short for playstation 3 produced by sony. it is a gaming device, blu-ray player, media device, web browser, has integrated wifi, and you wont need to pay $50per year to play online. Also, u can buy your own choice of size of hard disk size from the free market and change it with ease and without worry.
and yes, there are a lot of good games on it... lets start with metal gear 4(best game ever), Little Big planet(cute), Rachet and Clank, Uncharted 2 looks Amazing... Gran Turismo is only the Best game ever... Also I think Blu ray is a good thing... Comparing me playing MGS4(ps3) and Lost Odyssey(360), i definitely prefer the former... i am mentioning this because FF13 is coming out next year! so is God of War(best action game with the best narration ever.. u should get the GoW1and 2 pack that is being re-released in HD)..also, the ninja gaiden games are so much better on ps3(Bouncing boobies!!! sorry if u are a chick)
well my friend eltoro, i hope that answers your question....ignore the other ****** replies below, they do not answer your question
by kris_paul17 September 22, 2009 9:10 PM PDT
hey eltoro, were you born yesterday?! do you want a list of PS3 exclusives that are "good"? ok, just FYI:

1. Metal Gear Solid 4
2. Uncharted 1
3. Uncharted 2
4. Little Big Planet
5. God of War 3, etc....

and games that you can also play on PS3:

1. Assassins Creed 1
2. Assassins Creed 2
3. GTA4 (just in case you dont know what GTA means, it stand for GRAND THEFT AUTO)
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4. Need for Speed Shift

and more... can the xbox play Bluray movies? NO
can the xbox connect to the internet without any fees? NO
come on man, the reason they made all those plasma TVs is to watch Hi-Def movies! so, Bluray is the way to go!

oh by the way, do you know what a Bluray is? just let me know ok, i'll be glad to help you out since it sounds like you dont know what a PS3 is. NYAHAHAHAHA!

I cannot believe some of you people took eltoro2827 seriously. You poor souls.
by sb_nemesys September 22, 2009 11:18 PM PDT
sounds like this comment sprung up a bunch of sony fanboys. both consoles have many great exclusives. the xbox360 has games such as
halo
forza
gears of war
halo wars
mass effect
prey
soon, project natal
and many others still to come....

playstation 3 had
killzone
resistance
gran turismo
uncharted
metal gear
and others still to come.

point being, both consoles have alot to offer. sure, the ps3, now at $299 is the better bargain if you're buying it for the bluray. however if it's just for the games, then do your homework, both consoles are great options. the ps3, was still a better bargain when it was 399, but not everyone could afford that. still, sony has alot of catching up to do. as for the online service, microsoft may charge $50/year, but it's a small price to pay for the excellent service they provide. xbox live, in my opinion, is much better than the playstation network. i am a hardcore gamer, i buy the consoles for the games, and own the ps3, xbox360 and wii. as far as gaming goes, the xbox360 is by far my favorite. the wii got kinda boring, going through the same motions. the ps3 still has their best stuff ahead of them!
and earlier i mentioned project natal for the xbox360, do your homework on that. it's going to revolutionize how we play games... much more than the wii did.
by solitare_pax September 23, 2009 1:17 PM PDT
But can you play solitare on it?
by Rod Roddy September 23, 2009 3:49 PM PDT
No, really...what's a PS3?
by CDubber September 22, 2009 4:14 PM PDT
Hmm, $250 for the Elite *after rebate* (ugh) or $299 for the PS3 with Blu Ray, built-in Wi-Fi and free online gaming...tough call.

Not really. I just ordered the PS3. At that price it's a no-brainer. I think this is the tipping point where Sony finally starts to gain traction and Xbox falls way behind. I've been Wii-only up to now, sitting on the sidelines waiting to see where the Sony-Microsoft battle would go. I think Sony will have an unsurmountable advantage now.

by NPGMBR September 22, 2009 4:19 PM PDT
Yeah, Sony will have that advantage until about this time next year when Natal launches.
by CDubber September 22, 2009 4:20 PM PDT
Sony will have its own motion control system by then as well.
by rich12313 September 22, 2009 7:13 PM PDT
@CDubber
Too bad it will be mad expensive until they realize that they overcharge for it. (deja vu???)
by xmaster_dosx September 23, 2009 5:43 AM PDT
have you seen sony's motion control. its a mic with a red ball on it, wow. once natal comes out its going to blow sony out the water
by Zoobie September 23, 2009 10:00 AM PDT
I just did the same math and upgraded from Wii to PS3. Wi-fi is great, Blu-ray is a bonus, and I'm having a lot of fun. I started with only 3 games (Virtua Tennis 3, Burnout Paradise, and Little Big Planet)--they are all a blast to play and the Wii hasn't gotten much use since the PS3 came home (although SSBB and Mario Kart will always be pulled out for company, and they are well worth the Wii for those games alone).

I'm really looking forward to playing Ratchet and Klank and Uncharted. The best part is, I'm not paying full retail for games because there are lots of Greatest Hits out there for $20 to $30!
by Riquez-001 September 22, 2009 4:23 PM PDT
Don't forget there's always that $50 extra charge from MS so you can play online.

My friend and I did an experiment to run online gaming on both consoles to see which is faster and better. We also tested download speeds etc. and came with this conclusion:

-Gaming online is gaming online. There is absolutely no difference in the gaming experience playing online with Call of Duty 4 Modern Warefare on Xbox 360 or PS3. You get the same latency, packet loss, etc. but that is very dependent on your ISP as well. Why do people think Xbox 360 is better online? Well, we found out why.
**Microsoft games are all (majority if not all) P2P networking based. So if you are playing Halo on a server, if it lags, you will blame the 3rd party providing the server or your own ISP. Microsoft is not blamed for that. If the server lags, you blame the server if everyone is also lagging-not Microsoft dedicated servers. If you are the only one lagging, you will ask why am I lagging, what is wrong with my ISP and try to fix it.
**Sony provides dedicated servers as well as allows P2P on some games. Because they are Sony servers, people yell Sony sucks. Hence, people use the word Sony has crappy servers, Sony's name is in it.

-Download speed are the friggin same. You can't say one is better than the other because it's dependent on 1) if servers are working, which most of the time they are if not all the time. 2) Your ISP.

Personally, I think the $50.00 charge is a piece of mind and what Microsoft is doing is just making money off you for P2P. FYI: This is like when Napster was free, it was P2P downloading music. Did you have to pay for it back then? No, you do now though but why? Copyright laws. If there were no copyright laws, do you think Napster would want to charge? Probably. Why? Maintanence upkeep and subscription is the new thing. MMOs etc. charge you subscription so you can play on their servers. Xbox 360 is charging so you can use their network to connect to a server that's been approved and support the 3rd parties to have good performing servers. Nowadays, if your server doesn't work well, your company sucks and you need to hire new programmers, so you would think. But majority of the well known companies don't need support, as we all know. They have brilliant programmers and network engineers so hence, gaming online is gaming online.
by strongpimphand September 22, 2009 6:37 PM PDT
....And your data and charts to prove this really was an "experiment" and not just a poorly worded rant?

Because basically, you really didn't type much

nail on the head @ Absolution2009
by gnomercy September 23, 2009 2:15 AM PDT
download speeds the same? can I say "you lie" now. try updating your ps3 and waiting and waiting and waiting. getting a demo? that last arcade shooter (the psychic wars one), I downloaded it on both systems. ps3 took around 10 minutes, xbox less than a minute.

online gaming the same? comparing voice chat shows the difference. ps3 (when it works) sounds like everyone is talking in a box, while the 360 is generally always clear (the flipside is half the time you do not want to hear your teammates on the 360). Other than cod4, every game I attempted online on the ps3 was lagtastic. MGS4, killzone, even littlebigplanet dropped frames and randomly disconnected.

Do not misunderstand, I like the ps3. The swappable hard drive, to built in wifi, of course bluray, and a decent d-pad on the controller (the 360 one is plain horrible) but to say they are the same is disingenuous. Even the friends list and community settings are better on the 360, and since it has netflix and a great party voice chat system.

im going to make 2 sandwiches. the first one cost me 50$ to put together(360), the second one was given to me for free(ps3). which one is going to taste better? YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
by izmickey September 23, 2009 10:13 AM PDT
@ xmaster_dosx
Yes you do get what you pay for, ps3= best hardware. Xbox360=overpriced. Xbox360 at $250 is very fair.
by xmaster_dosx September 23, 2009 12:43 PM PDT
@ izmickey
im not trying to start a flame war here, so PEACE
i wasnt comparing the 360 to the ps3. i was comparing XBL to PSN. dont get me wrong there are good and bad
things about both OS i just feel that because its a paid service its a better product overall.(a better tasting one as i so put it) now this is just my opinion.
and does the ps3 have the best hardware? yea ill give you that. but most gamemakers dont know how to use all that power so that kind of hurts the ps3 and gamers in the short run.
is the 360 overpriced? yea ill give you that too. BUT DONT FORGET the ps3 was overpriced for a long time too.

and i really dont care about the rebate, i never turn the dam things in anyways. plus im getting the new 250 g call of duty xbox. cause no matter what any woman says bigger is better my friend. lol
by Absolution2009 September 23, 2009 3:33 PM PDT
We used equipment made for networking to test this without the company knowing and yes it is an experiment because we didn't know what we would find. My wording might have sounded pro sony but if you don't believe our results do the test yourself. I almost guarantee you will get the same results.

I still think the $50.00 charge for Gold Live service is just a scam and psychological. If I pay for it I get better is not always correct.

I mean, Linux was always better than Windows it's just hard for people to understand how to use it and it was free back then and now. Right now Snow Leopard and Windows have improved drastically, but imo Linux is still better (although this can be a huge debate that can go for years).
by xmaster_dosx September 24, 2009 11:36 AM PDT
@absolution
well we all have our own opinion on things, so lets just agree to disagree my friend :)
by professionaladventurer September 22, 2009 4:27 PM PDT
Has anyone EVER gotten a mail-in rebate back? I haven't in about 12 of those things. I have given up trying, now I just get stuff for free.

Do you guys really care about gaming that much? Isn't that a little sad? I have a PS3 for my 8 year old, he seem to like it. I play some of his games maybe 20 minutes every other week (when I am not insulting geeks online)

The best rebate I ever got with consul was when Sega Genesis came with a coupon for 2 games AND a controller. If I was MS, I'd rather give people 2 games before I'd write them a check. Especially if the titles to chose from were all games that are likely to have a sequel made soon.

face it any intelligent person realized long ago that when you purchase the $250 extended warranty you get the XBROKE free. As many as you can stand replacing/sent off to repair before you go insane. But, i forget... to support Microsoft getting into hardware you are already insane.

Just get a PS3 and get on with real next generation HD console gaming.

by xmaster_dosx September 23, 2009 12:51 PM PDT
@izmickey
ive only bought 1, the dam thing has rrod on me 2 times. but with the 3 year warranty MS pays for everything so there is no need to buy a new xbox.
and i have both systems. MGS4 and little big planet are badass games. but so are gears of war and halo.
so no im not a xbox fanboy, im a gaming fanboy

I have a pS3 and 360. I watched a blu-ray once and thats probably the last time on my ps3. I play all my games on the 360 and use the ps3 to watch movies. Havent turned on my wii in a year. Might buy another 360. haha

I have similiar gaming habits of caifanes. I have owned a 360 for about 3 years (had the RROD once about 12 months ago, sent it in, had new one back from ms within 3 weeks). I also recently purchased a slim the week they came out, as I was already planning on buying a blu-ray player that week.

I have used the PS3 ONLY for blu-ray and storing music/video, BUT I play all my games on the 360. Yes, I love watching blu-rays on my samsung 52B650, but I find XBox live is where its at......I dont even see myself buying any games for the PS3 w exception of GT5 (if it ever comes out...)
by douggdangger September 22, 2009 6:01 PM PDT
That would tempt me to get another 360.

The PS3 has nothing exciting going for it.

All the games they have are a played out old man sneaking around stealthily, a sock puppet swinging from tree to tree like a monkey and a Tomb Raider knock off that sucks more than Tomb Raider.

Have no need for wifi since the 360 is not a handheld and I don't need an optical drive that's already obsolete since I stream and torrent my hd movies.

Sony should just throw in the towel in the gaming world since they're completely clueless.

"an old man sneaking around stealthily"
you realize people call MGS4 one of the greatest games of all time right?

And i'd love to see your pirated torrented version of an HD movie look better than blu-ray, and have all the features including 7.1 surround sound, menu's, all that nice stuff. Don't get me started on streaming 1080p.
by CDubber September 22, 2009 8:50 PM PDT
LOL, you're talking about the lack of variety on the PS3 when all the 360 has going for it are 14 versions of Halo??? (Which, BTW, is a game I played 15 years ago - when it was called Marathon.)

Xbox fanboys are funny.
by Byteme2009 September 23, 2009 8:28 AM PDT
@ douggdangger - I read through your comment before noticing who posted it. It actually made me chuckle when I saw it was you! I should have known! Same old arguments dougg - I (and I am sure many others) DO appreciate the built-in wifi. I would like to buy a 360 at some point, but until the price comes down just a little more then I have no desire to. The system gets a little too pricey once you add in all the little extras you have to buy, and I am still not 100% convinced that they have fixed the numerous issues with the hardware itself (not just the RROD).

The sock puppet comment - is that aimed at Little Big Planet? Astonishing game if you are into doing anything creative. I was actually amazed at the how good it was (I thought it looked kind of silly until I played it). My son and I played it and I have not laughed so hard in years - that was worth the price of the whole system right there for me (but I know I would be in the minority).

Haven't played MSG4 - played a demo and didn't get into it, but then again that was just playing a demo for about five minutes. Might revisit the demo. I could say the same of Halo - played that a bit (PC) and found it just kind of average, but again didn't play it enough to really get into it.

Tomb Raider knock-off? Uncharted I presume. I didn't like Tomb Raider, but have to say Uncharted is quite a fun game, with good mechanics and some quite memorable moments so far (only a couple of hours into it at the moment).

I know you hope that Blu-Ray is obsolete, but even a fanatical MS fanboy has to realize that is not the case. It will be some day, much as beta-max, VHS, LD, etc. DVD will die out at some point, but not any time soon.
by sb_nemesys September 23, 2009 9:31 AM PDT
we need to teach someone how to count... 14 versions of halo? with the recent halo3:odst, i counted only four. and it's been over a full decade since the release of the first. i've played almost double the metal gear games... so i don't want to hear that argument. halo and metal gear do have one thing in common though, they seems to get better with every release.
by ComeToTerms September 22, 2009 6:12 PM PDT
SO WHAT MS HAS NOTICED THAT EVER SINCE SONY PUT OUT THE PS3 SLIM FOR $299 AND AT SOME PLACES $269 THAT THE SALES HAVE ALL OF A SUDDEN JUMPED UP FOR SONY. WITH THE SALES THE WAY THEY HAVE BEEN FOR SONY SINCE THE RELEASE OF THE PS3, MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE STARTED OFF WITH A $299 PRICE TAG. I WONDER WHAT THEIR NUMBER WOULD HAVE BEEN THEN... BUT ANYWAY, I'M REALLY TIRED OF THE BACK AND FORTH WITH THESE SYSTEMS, THE WII IS FINISHED EVENTHOUGH IT OUTSOLD THE PS3 AND XBOX360. BUT THE XBOX360 DID OUTSELL THE PS3. NOW MOVING ON, I RATHER HERE A DATE ON THE XBOX NATAL. OR BETTER YET, PS4, WII HD (DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I MENTIONED THEM) AND THE XBOX720. ALL THESE SYSTEMS ARE STARTING TO FEEL LIKE VCRS TO ME.

3/8 of an inch: that's the distance your finger has to travel from the 'A' key in order for you to not sound like an idiot. Turn it off, slugger. No kidding Microsoft has noticed, it's their job to notice and react. Also, Playstation couldn't afford to sell the PS3 at a more competitive price; at the time of the release the technology in the PS3 (hardware) was egregiously expensive, thus making the PS3 expensive.
The PS3 has a 10 year life cycle, so don't expect a PS4 until the tail end of the 2010-2020 decade, according to Playstaion execs. The PS3 system has an incredible amount of computing power that hasn't been tapped yet, the software isn't handling parallel processing efficiently yet, neither is it taking full advantage of the teraflop abilities of the GPU.

"Way better games" is an opinion. Honestly, when I'm browsing at Gamestop, at least 75% of the games are multi-platform. Each system has it's exclusives that are very good, so it really just depends on the exclusives someone wants to play.

I have both consoles.... Whatever the 360 is, it isn't a Sony product by any stretch....it's a piece of chinese junk PC that is built by the same crappy engineers that brought you the BSOD and Windows Vista. Two of my buddies who bought 360s when I did (30+ crowd) are all on either their 2nd or 3rd unit now. I'm on my 3rd (and last) unit.

The PS3 is built a lot better, it's solid, and doesn't sound like a jet turbine when you turn it on....
