The day after Labor Day you can count on Samsung to kick off the holiday shopping season by announcing new cell phones for the U.S. market. This year, Verizon Wireless is the lucky carrier and the handsets are the Samsung Intensity and Rogue.
With slider designs and full alphabetic keyboards, the Intensity and Rogue are geared toward messaging. The Rogue, which resembles the Samsung Impression, is the more sophisticated of the two. It offers a 3.1-inch touch screen with Samsung's TouchWiz interface.
Features include a full Web browser; a 3-megapixel camera; messaging and e-mail; 3G (EV-DO) with support for Verizon's music and video services; VZ Navigator; a memory card slot; Visual Voice Mail; Bluetooth; a speakerphone; a personal organizer; and a file viewer for most Microsoft Office documents. As part of its announcement, Verizon said that Rogue customers who want to use data, e-mail and applications can purchase one of two data plans. For $9.99 per month they'll get 25MB and for $19.99 per month they'll get 75MB.
The Intensity offers a 2.1-inch display. As it's not a touch-screen model, the Intensity features a standard numeric keypad below the display. Features include a music player; a 1.3-megapixel camera; voice commands and dialing; Bluetooth; a speakerphone; a personal organizer; a memory card slot; a standard Web browser; messaging and e-mail; and support for VZ Navigator. The Intensity can connect with V Cast Music with a PC connection, but it does not support wireless song downloads.
The bronze and black Rogue is $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year service agreement.The price of the Intensity depends on your choice of color. The charcoal gray version is $29.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement. If you'd like it in red, the Intensity is free and available only online. Both handsets go on sale Tuesday.
