PS3, Xbox 360 finally outsell Wii--in U.S., anyway

As expected, recent price cuts to the PS3 and Xbox 360 helped boost sales of the two consoles, and a strong showing for both helped propel them past the Wii in the weekly American sales tally. As you can see from the numbers, it's not a huge win, but the price cuts only went into effect in the middle of the week, so we may see a bigger margin of victory next week.

Sony is the big winner. It saw sales of the PS3 jump 104 percent over the previous week, while the Xbox 360's sales spiked 32 percent. Overall, however, it's worth pointing out that the Wii has the lead in terms of worldwide sales and the DS is still king in the U.S. (The PSP also had a nice jump, but that appears to be attributable to the special Dissidia Final Fantasy bundle that went on sale recently).

On a personal note, I picked up a PS3 Slim Thursday at a GameStop in New York. When I asked the salesperson how sales were going on the Slim and Xbox 360, she said both saw big sales last week (especially from preorders on the Slim), but that things had slowed down this week. Interestingly, she said her store's stock of "fat" $299 PS3s was gone. Who bought them? Mainly foreigners who were visiting New York and couldn't wait for the Slim to arrive.

Looking ahead, I think both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will see decent--but not necessarily spectacular--sales over the next couple of months. A lot of people who were waiting for the price cuts will go out and buy systems quickly, but the next big wave of sales will come closer to the holidays.

What do you think? Will Sony and Microsoft will be able to hold a lead over Nintendo? Who will be on top this holiday season?

It's interesting to note that Xbox has claimed supremacy over the PS3, yet those sales figures show the PS3 is currently outselling the Xbox. Which means the only reason why the Xbox has outsold the PS3 overall is that it was released a whole year ahead of the PS3. I think the PS3 will continue to outsell the Xbox and eventually surpass them on overall units sold worldwide. Consumers are wising to the fact that the PS3 is the superior hardware and can be the centerpiece of their home entertainment. The Wii is going to continue to fall off. This console has lost its luster. It was a cute gimmick, but it's not that fun to play anymore. I'm bored with it. Especially at the $250 price point. If they don't drop their price by $100 to $150 dollars, they can kiss future sales good bye. They would be best to do a redesign or come out with their next gen console to join the rest of the big boys with an HD output and higher def capabilities.

well said and well punctuated.

There is no doubt about that. The ps3 is selling just fine and is doing quite well. It isn't dominating like the ps2 did, but no console ever has. Even still the 360 does have a very strong lineup. I am glad to be an owner of both.
by Saltiva September 4, 2009 9:31 AM PDT
I don't agree with some aspects of your comment. True the 360 out sold the PS3 due to a year head start (which is a matter of smart marketing), but the 360 has a much better online interface and experience. I've had 2 original 360s and both rest-in-peace now and enjoyed the larger selection of games, Netflix once in a while, frequently used it as a media hub and messaging. Currently I have the PS3 (bummed about my 360 experience) and have to say the Bluray is ok but not worth the tag alone, the games don't seem to look as good and the online SUX! So I purchased a new Elite 360 system and made sure it was the latest model (Jasper) and have since enjoyed the online without any hicups- however, I also have a "gaming" PC which I enjoy more, especially now that I've got a Bluray Burner/Player in it. So now my PS3 has been hibernating for several monthes. If I couldn't afford all the above my order of preference would be: macdaddy PC, 360 (newest model), then PS3 and WII would never be an option (it is just a gimic for children).

Being that these sales figures cover at time frame which includes the PS3 price drop, but not the XBOX price drop, this may be the exception and not the norm. Show me the sales figures for the week ending 9/5/09, see if PS3 is still on top then. I just bought an Xbox yesterday, choosing it over the PS3. My reasons:
No backwards compatibility to PS2. I don't care if YOU don't play PS2 games, I have several I love and play all the time. If I'm going to have to keep a PS2 around, why would I need a PS3?
I want a Blu-ray player, but I don't want to have another remote lying around. So far there is ONE universal remote with Bluetooth which will work with the PS3. And I don't buy adapters.
Finally - there aren't ANY games exclusive to the PS3 that I want to play. I'm not saying there aren't any good games, just none that interest me personally. Xbox has the Sega compilation, DLC for Fallout 3 (I know PS3 is getting it, but with New Vegas coming out next year, I don't want to be left waiting), and Fable 2. Again, these are my PERSONAL preferences, and this is why I picked one over the other.
If the PS3 had an IR port and full hardware BC, I would have bought one. If they put that stuff in, I still may.
Oh, and the XBOX controller feels better in the hand too. This from a Playstation lifer.

"the only reason why the Xbox has outsold the PS3 overall is that it was released a whole year ahead of the PS3."

That is incorrect. The 360 had sold 5 million copies at the release date of the PS3. The 360 is now almost 9 million consoles ahead in sales. So, MS has actually sold over 3 million more consoles than Sony since the release of the PS3. Now that things are even, we will have to see how it eventually plays out as far as overall sales.

I would just like to say its rare to find a comment with only civil replies on it. the stuff written about the wii, well I think its merited, I now only play artsy VC games and a select few first party games on the wii.
by seraphemz September 4, 2009 3:19 PM PDT
@Saltiva - You have gogles on if you think that games look better on 360, or even some placebo effect from reading to many comments.

You just admitted that you bought 2 360's that BOTH died and then went out AGAIN to by a third !!!!
Would you do the same for any other product that you purchase??

Blu-Ray is far better than streaming Netflix online and worth the Price if you are into quality, which after buying 3 products that are known to break down, you probably arent.
by ifuwereahotdog September 4, 2009 5:58 PM PDT
@ grilledcharlie

I am sorry but you are just plain wrong. MS sold over 10 million units before the PS3 was released. If they had only sold 5 million, that would have been a complete DISASTER.

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Xbox_360

And it really makes you wonder why Resident Evil 5 has sold more copies on the PS3 than the 360. Maybe because of double purchases of a 360 console due to RROD?

http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly.php
by kalel33 September 4, 2009 7:23 PM PDT
@ ifuwereahotdog

How many problems with your statements? You don't compare the PS3's first 3 years to the 360's last 3 years, you compare first 3 years of both and you find that the 360 sold more....period.

2nd, how long did it take you to find one single title that sold better on the PS3? I can give you a list of games that sold 2-3 times as much on the 360 than on the PS3, including all Guitar Hero and all Call of Duty games not just a crappy game like Resident Evil. It probably didn't sell well on the 360 because there are better games on the system.
by ifuwereahotdog September 4, 2009 8:10 PM PDT
@kalel33

The PS3 hasn't even been out 3 years, whats with this 3 years thing? I was merely stating a fact that MS sold 10 million instead of 5 million the first year.

I'm sure that's why Resident Evil 5 didn't sell well on the 360 compared to the PS3. Cause it's not like the PS3 saw the release of MLB 09 the show or Killzone 2 all within 3 weeks of each other. And they are both exclusive to the PS3. As of July 2009, RE5 was the best selling game on the 360 in the US.

That, or it is such a good console, that it easily worth the cost of a new one, should the old one die.
by kalel33 September 4, 2009 2:05 PM PDT
@ Jawknee1

Still posting garbage, even after lying throughout posts about ratings on 360 games compared to PS3 games. It's pitiful how low you have to stoop.
by Shinobi2099 September 5, 2009 6:17 AM PDT
@kalel33

Really I think the Crap60 and PS3 war would be so much more enjoyable if you were hit by a bus. Seriously. It's a debate. No need to call people liars and insult people. You are what I call an internet gangsta. You talk big online but in RL you are probably a quiet reject. Don't blame us b/c ur life sucks bro lol.
by kalel33 September 5, 2009 6:30 AM PDT
@ Shinobi2099

Nope, not a quiet reject. Care to exchange FB accounts and see who the reject is, bet my wife is better looking than anything you'll ever get? The one thing I can't stand is people who flat out lie here to be a 360 or PS3 fanboy. Jawknee1 is a liar, flat out.
by Shinobi2099 September 5, 2009 7:33 AM PDT
@kalel33
Lol compare wives on FB? Really? Really? No thanks lol I don't date anyone on FB so my FB page doesn't reflect my love life. And unless your wife looks like Megan Fox like my girl does (and I'm not lying I don't need to) I gotcha beat. Shes greek too. Mmmmm sexay! But that is beside the point I am here strictly to discuss games. YOU get personal for no reason. Just b/c a person has false information doesn't make them a liar. They may just have read a bad article otr may be repeating what they heard. Like I said bro you need a reality check especially if you would stoop so low as to use your WIFE to win a debate. Thats just sad dude. Exactly what owning a 360 does to the soul man, the soul.
by kalel33 September 5, 2009 7:51 AM PDT
@ Shinobi2099

Jawnee1 has been calling people dense, stupid, etc for some time. I asked him to back up his information with a source before and was never able to come up with one, because he lied.

You say I make things personal, but then you say my life sucks and was a quiet reject. I was just willing to show that I have a college degree from a major university, great job, many personal friends(not FB friends to collect), and a beautiful wife. I'm guessing your a 15 year old on here saying your girlfriend looks like Megan Fox, because if you were older you wouldn't have used that reference.
by Shinobi2099 September 5, 2009 8:42 AM PDT
No seriously, she just looks like her. people say that... why does that make me 15? Reasoning like that makes me believe your arguments are void. lol

@TexasTechie0504

If you were talking Jeep Wrangler, I'd agree. There is no substitute. When it comes to consoles, some of us are once bitten twice shy.
by jwilson61904 September 4, 2009 9:49 AM PDT
I'm actually a little suprised that the 360 and PS3 sales are that close. I've been watching the top selling video games updated hourly on amazon.com since the price cuts were announced. The PS3 slim has been in the No. 1 or No. 2 spot ever since. The 360 Elite made it up to No. 8 (I believe) for about a day and has since fallen out of the top 25.

I realize that this isn't the best way to gauge sales, but I'm a little suprised that amazon.com is that much different than the market as a whole. Oh well, good news for the industry. Now if the game makers will stop pushing release dates back into 2010.

Yes, I'm replying to my own comment.

It was pointed out to me, that one possible explanation for this is that the majority of new PS3 purchases will be the new PS3 slim where as the Xbox 360 purchases are split between 3 models. I had not looked past the top 25 on amazon's list since the price drops. Just checked the top 100 and the Elite is listed at No. 37 and the Pro is No. 67. So there is some evidence that the explanation above may be at least partially responsible for the descrepancy I mentioned in my earlier post.

I have to wonder what percent of the 360 and PS3 sells are from people who realized that the Wii is a one trick pony.

Yeah right, the Wii is on borrowed time. You obviously are clueless. Even after the price cuts the Wii was outlsold by less than a thousand units. Once they come out with their new games or have a price cut of their own they will dominate the console wars again like they have since their inception.
by vonscoot81 September 5, 2009 8:57 AM PDT
Price cut on Wii to $199 will take affect by Oct 4. This may help a boost in console sales going into the holidays, but I can tell you from a retailing perspective that the number of games actually sold for the Wii is far less than either the 360 or PS3.
by MeepMan September 5, 2009 4:38 PM PDT
Wii will probably hit a resurgence as games like Red Steel 2 starts getting game companies making the real deal on the Wii. Wii will see many good titles within 2 years that PS2.5 devs will go: "Why are Wii working on games for this P.O.S." XBox360 devs will instead do a 180 and go work on Wii titles. And PSP devs will go: "This oversized GPU+screen has one common destination between all of its units: the landfill."

Sorry, had to go on a rant there. I'm kidding on all but the PS3 part. People are going to realize...
by Renegade Knight September 8, 2009 11:20 AM PDT
@wrightdawg

But it was outsold. Mine collects dust. Both the 360 and PS3 get used regularly.
by myles taylor September 4, 2009 10:54 AM PDT
I wouldn't be surprised if stores are cutting deals on the "fat" models to move them. That's what I would do if I were them. It's more important to move inventory than make margins. Even if they are breaking even they want to move inventory.

As far as the console sales go, I think that they will keep up and the Wii will fall back on the wayside a little bit more. That's my opinion and I could be completely wrong, but there it is.

Actually no deals needed to be cut the store I work at had about twelve "fatties" in stock and people came in and took them all at $299.

The Elites and Pros also disappeared.

32% Xbots buying a new console to replace their broken one. =P

You know what's really funny about that comment and similar references by CNET arguing the sales total for 360 may be skewed by replacements??? The simple fact that like it or not, even if that opinion is true - it speaks volumes to the fact people want to continue playing XBOX 360. I own two, an original - launch - and an elite - both RROD, one was repaired / replaced in 8 days (no further issues) and the other was carried into Best Buy and I immediately walked out with a new one (no issues). Even though they were repaired / replaced for free - the fact is, I would have paid for an arcade replacement because I love the games; especially co-op and multi-player online.

So, hahaha stat - 32% replacement? Who gives a flying BEEP - a sale is a sale. How many people would have plunked down $300 or $400 to replace a dead PS3 based on that gaming experience?

This is what i see,The gaming experience on ps3 is amazing. And I have never ever had a ps2 or 3 go bad so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
by whoadude1 September 4, 2009 11:35 AM PDT
Very Well Said Mr White.

Same old answer. He wrote what he thought without thinking (and most people here read it for what they wanted to see, the 32% replacement %).

I personally own 2 360's right now. A pro (once repaired), and an Elite. Before I bought the Elite, I had 4 repaired, none of which was longer than a week, and all were replaced with new units. Granted I had to go through the MSFT hoops of getting them replaced, it was still seamless.

The exact opposite analogy of buying a lemon car, and vowing to NEVER buy from that maker again. I said that once about a Dodge I owned, and now am looking at a Dodge product.

I have no issues with the Elite, knock on wood, and will continue to pay what some say is a HIGH membership fee for Live. WOW....a whole 3.00+ a month for by far a BETTER online experience.

Does it say anywhere in the article that this includes sales from day 1 launch of either system, or just the last week or last year? I didn't see that listed there either.

As far as the authors holiday question goes.....Ill bet hands down it goes to XBOX and the 360 Elite.....Games on tap include the latest Halo add-on ODST, Bioshock 2, Forza 3, Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty # whatever they are on.....and so on and so on...Of which I believe all but 1 of those are multiplayer ONLINE. Enuff said
by izmickey September 4, 2009 1:01 PM PDT
@whoadude1
Slow down there guy, your analogy is pretty bad. Dodge doesnt make just one car it makes many different models with many different features. The xbox360 has one machine not two or three, here is a better analogy for you, the xbox360 is like your dodge model, xbox360 arcade is the cheapest model while xbox elite adds leather seats and 6 disc cd player, sunroof, you get the point. To keep on buying that same model that breaks down on you isnt smart, and it would be best to use your money elsewhere.

Also to your 3 dollars a month doesnt hide the facts that its $40-$50 a year to have XBL. With that money i can buy two games on ebay, in great condition.

Also, have you compared XBL and PSN lately? By your post, i have to think you didnt. Two years ago hands down XBL blew PSN to pieces. Not the case now, there are some things the XBL offers that PSN doesnt and it still is better but NOT by much. Which is why i dont feel like paying $50 is justified in my opinion. I can say this because i have an xbox360 and ps3 side by side. BTW, you do know two of the games you named are multiplatform right?

As far as holiday question goes, its tough to say, because honestly i dont know why people buy the wii, or keep on buying another xbox360, i understand buying a second xbox360 but third? thats just stupid to be honest.
by kalel33 September 4, 2009 2:11 PM PDT
You said two of those were multi-platform, but there are rumors that the 360 will get a 6 month exclusive to Bioshock 2, which makes it an exclusive for the holiday season.
by seraphemz September 4, 2009 3:32 PM PDT
Its amazing that people can admit to REPLACING a product due to defect 3 - 4 times and try to justify it !!!

I would NEVER own a product like that. If the PS3 was KNOWN to break down as much as a 360 and the 360 was the reliable one, I would be a 360 owner right now.

Goes to show the American mentality of "gemme the cheaper one... get'er done !! "

I love my BMW, i can get to the same place in a Corrola.. but its a better ride in my Beemer..

Definitely true! Nintendo had such short sided thinking. They innovate with motion technology but microsoft and sony both packed there machines with superior tech and power and knew they could add adaptations later (motion control, better online gaming, hardrives etc etc).
by cyclonica1980 September 4, 2009 11:19 AM PDT
You mean people finally reliazed the Wii has a horrible lineup of titles meant for people between the ages of 4-12? I remember how everyone on my street got a Wii in the opening stages of its release. That was about 16 households. Now no one has it anymore, even my neighbors 9 year old got sick of it. They now all own PS3's or 360's. I warned them of this from the start but no one listened to me. Nintendo better start throwing out some more appealing titles to people above the elementary school level, or else it will steadily lose valuable market share to the PS3 and 360, especially once these consoles release their respected motion sensing technology.

Im no Sony fanboy but I think the PS3 is going to begin slowly taking the lead back and become #1 overall, its titles coming out within the next year are incredible, and im sorry there is no better bang for the buck than a blu ray playing high end system for 300.00. Microsofts real issue is the Red Ring situation. As an owner of 4 xbox 360s (only paid for 2 due to RROD) I will not be buying a new 360 anytime soon. Love Gears of War, but crappy hardware is a no go for me.

When the time comes I will get a PS3 to accompany my nice new 42" Samsung TV. If microsoft makes a reliable system in the near future, My PS3 will have a roomie. However I will never own a Wii.

Yes the PS3 is once again the King of Consoles( Yippi Skippi ). The challenge now is can they
do it for the next five years striaght. I think they can now that their priced right, but only time will tell. The interesting part of this story is that their still selling a load of PS2 and makeing a killing on them. Not bad for Sony, they always find a way to stay at the top. Go PS3.............

Well yea, the PS3 and Xbox360 are going to beat the Wii this holiday. Why? Pretty much everyone that wanted a Wii has a Wii by now. People have not been willing to fork out $400+ on a PS3, and now that it is $300, I would expect sales to spike this holiday. Now, the only question is can they keep up with demand?

the wii was a horrbile system from the start, the motion controller n gameplay was a great idea but i think it was aimed more for kids, beginner gamers and some more experienced gamers. and the price drop for both ps3 and 360 were excellent ideas, now i have both 360 and ps3 but i use 360 much more bc of the online and the better exclusive games, ive played infamous/killzone 2 which i wasnt too pleased with but i have to say metal gear 4,uncharted and resistance 2 are still the best ps3 exlusive games available. then again every1 has their own tastes in games so what i think, another person will def think differently.

I think we'll see high sales next year than this year. Most of the insanely awesome games are incoming next year rather than this year due to delays.

At the end of this year, it's hard to say what will be on top. I want to say Sony because of their game library and their company finally working together to bring different sectors into one company (synergy) so they might have some interesting things come next year.

Im pretty sure and glad that the Wii will always sell the most overall over PS3 and Xbox 260. Wii has managed to get so many new types of people into having fun on a console.

And when I see people saying there bored of their Wii I dont get it, I bought one and love it because I knew what I was buying.

And im not saying the PS3 and Xbox 360 are bad, but I think people need to realise that people are into different types of things. Just because I like the Wii dont mean you should. Commenters need to realise that each console appeals to a different person.

exactly. I've posted this before. All the posters who say that Wii sux also mention that they're playing Killzone of Metal Gear or Halo. Uh.... yeah, if that's what you're playing then buy a f-ing PS3 or 360! There are more families who are buying a wii than kids living in their parents basements buying a 360 so it sold more. Nintendo will keep their price at $250 but bundle sports resort and a motion + with it and hold their own with sony and ms. The wii is sooooo far ahead of the other 2 that even if their sales plateau they're the winners of the decade. Eat it Sony and MS!!

Most gamers don't have the luxury of buying all systems and/or different generations of a single system. The vast majority of consumers don't buy another 360, especially after having two earlier hardware failures. Wii Fit is marketed to adults, not children, and is wildly successful. I'm glad people want to cheer their favorite console, but any one person's preference has little to do with sales to the general public. Consider the average person who is buying, especially at this late date for all 3 consoles.

This was gonna happen eventually because there isn't much demand for the Wii anymore. Most of the people that want it already own it. I think this may be the year that PS3 and 360 outsell the Wii during the holiday season. Which one depends on which company has the best ads.

Bottom line the Wii needs a massive price cut to reflect its inferior product. Motion Control is a simple add-on for both the 360 and PS3 with no shortcomings.

Price on the Wii will drop to $199 by Oct 4 at the latest. Seen the print myself. For those of you still waiting to purchase the Wii, the time will soon be at hand.

If you're just talking about playing then the only differences between the two is that it's easier to jump into games on XBL, which has to do with the vast difference in the amount of people online on XBL compared to PSN, and party/private talk. Party or Private talk is the best thing to happen to online so I don't have to hear the smack, racism, or stupidity from people online.

Kalel - Getting into an online game on PS3 is just as easy as the 360. I have played on both. Both are easy.

Although I dont get a lot more kids on 360, You are right about Party or Private chat. Thats something that it needed and wanted on the PS3 and hopefully coming soon.

The playstion 3 has choppy gameplay experience unparallel to XBL. Ps3, free online play but no good online experience including gameplay. XBL monthly fee, much better game play with premium online features. Well if you want to go online go with Xbox 360 really nice OS. If you want a premium online experience on the ps3 Sony will have to make charge a fee. That's bussines

Deed211 Do you even have a PS3 and play it online? I play resistance 2 online with almost no lag at all and thats with 8 player coop. The reason why you have choppy gameplay is because you probably are trying to use wireless for online gaming and are far away from your router. To tell you the truth I had more lag playing halo 2 and 3 than with psn games.

It's got a better interface and is easier to use to find people to play with and create online multiplayer games.

Sony tends to make things harder to do than they need to be.

Live sucks, who wants to pay for online where everywhere else you get for free, not even pc games need a fee, and you get the same quality internet, because there is no HIGHER QUALITY INTERNET, its the same damn internet that im using to type up the rant about people who think they are smart for purchasing a 360 and need to compare it to everyone else to justify their bad decisive purchase, its pretty much like spending the same money on a toyota yaris as it is to spend on an escalade, GO DIE ,there is nothing good about 360, at all, no redeeming quality, M$ wants your money and your just giving it to them, windows OS sucks 360 interface is retarded, and you get nothing with the system at all, games look worse, even PSN games have better quality resolution than most 360 games, controllers need batteries, no built in wireless, a retarded HDD system, that cant be upgraded because they have to make everything difficult, it runs on DVDs, really now why the hell would i spend the same money for half, maybe even a fourth, of the quality hardware. it does seem a bit outlandish doesn't it?
