After God of War: PS2 franchises that could get fresh life on the PS3

Sony, please make this your next PS3 re-release.

Sony's announcement this week of a PS3 edition of the first two PS2 God of War games, called God of War Collection, was exciting--unless you already own both games.

With 720p HD support added in, however, it raises a serious question: will backward-compatibility be a relic of video game days gone by? With the PS3 no longer able to play PS2 games, fans will be ever more reliant on re-releases and virtual console titles to resell them the greatest hits of the last generation.

As long as the old re-releases are lovingly upscaled to HD and given some extra bells and whistles, however, we could be a little more forgiving. There are plenty of other memorable franchises from the PS2 glory years that Sony would be wise to re-release and package with HD-compatible upgrades. Here's our short list. And we'll give you a hint: one of them involves giant rock formations.

Any we left off?

Its a shame that the games are backward compatible. I am still waiting for Black Berry to have a full slide out qwerty key board with a control pad to play PS games on. Not a bad ideal more people of all ages are getting smart phones. P.S Long live War of Monsters. I wish that game was available for PC.

A good PS2 game I would like to see in 1080p would be Shadow of the Colossus. One of the more interesting platforming/adventure/awesome games for the PS2 that would just kick some ass on the PS3.

Yes yes yes yes yes! 1080p and at least full 5.1, if it doesn't already have it.

I have been trying to find a copy of ICO for at least 6months now. I refuse to pay ebay prices! lol it was such a great game, i sold my copy to gamestop for a foolish 5 dollar credit. Gamestop=greedy rip off!!

Highly agreed. I definately dont mind paying for a game i already may have as long as there is something new, upscale res is def worth it. Metal Gear 3 is not fully appreciated in standard res because sometimes its jst hard to make out things in the bush; but imagine an HD version (^_^)
Great post!

I bought Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and MGS3: Snake Eater the other day in my local GameSpot (Ireland). ?60 altogether. MGS3 at ?14.99 came free as an offer. Probably more than I should have paid but it was the only place I could find them new and trust (internet or in store) and I don't like second hand.

I have not played the 3 games before.

The Twisted Metal Franchise has been left off the list. I think it is one of the strongest of the PS2 lineup and I wish that there was a new one coming out on the PS3

Strongly seconded. TM2 for PS3. Let's get it. As far as the PS3 version, I heard the developer (I forget his name, but like the main dude, not the cats who died on the plane) got mad that Sony was being bch's, not really giving any sort of respect or support to the TM franchise. So he was like fck TM for PS3. This was after the secret message bs in the TM Head On game. I could be wrong. Sony has strongly fronted on Twisted Metal though. Twisted Metal 2 has to be top 10 game on any Sony system. Yeah I said it. And I'll say is again.

Twisted Metal 2 is the classic of all 2 player games where you and a friend can just beat on each other all day and all night. An updated PS3 version would kick butt. In the meantime, you can buy a copy from the sony online store that will play on your PS3. A good thing too, since a "friend" borrowed my old PS1 copy and returned it 3 years later in unplayable condition.

I would LOVE to play in Paris or Hong Kong or even Moscow in 720p !!!

Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms
Those two games on one cleaned-up disk would be enough to get me to buy a PS3.

Now that Disney bought Marvel, I'm scared that Kindom Hearts 3 is going to turn into Marvel vs. Disney...

The PS3 is how old? 3-4 years? I can't believe its been that long and we still don't have GT5. There are not that many great games to play on the system. I think I will not buy the next system to come out because of the lack of games...

PS3 is 2 years and 10 months old. Signs point to GT5 hitting Q4 2009: http://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5s-q4-2009-release-date-confirmed/
by Jefferson101 September 5, 2009 2:39 PM PDT
So about 3 years old. 3 years to get GT5 out on the system...crap

Forget the ps2 remakes: somehow Squaresoft has re-made every game up until Final Fantasy VII. Remake FFVII for ps3.

Then put the original Final Fantasy Tactics on modern hardware. It would be perfect with a level editor and online sharing.

Then, ps2 games I'd like to see upgraded are platformers: Jak and Dexter (the original, not the atrocious sequels), Sly 1 and definitely I'll second Klonoa 2.

Twisted Metal...of course, yes. That's a good one. But for me, I'd just take Ico/Shadow and Amplitude/Frequency.

Timesplitters. It really is just an evolution of N64's Bond, but a great time on PS2. Also Black was a fun FSP on PS2. Could blow up a ridiculous amount of stuff.

I would love if they bring previous GTA to ps3. 1)gta san andreas...which i feel is a better game that GTA 4, they need vice city, liberty city stories and vice city stories and i would be in heaven.

So lets do it rockstar & sony......

Here's some random games that have to be remade (not just from PS2)

- Twisted Metal 3
- Smugglers Run
- Streets of Rage Series
- Golden Axe Series, I believe there is one for PS3 but its not anything like the original
- Killer Instinct Series - Nintendo =(
- Tony Hawk, only the first one. Just want better graphics maybe extra levels and more, better quality, music
