Just when you thought Zunes and iPods would have September all to themselves, the portable video player powerhouse known as Archos drops off two new devices for FCC approval.

The Archos A5S and A5H revealed in the FCC documents look very similar to last year's Archos 5 Internet media tablet, although the photos show a new white color for the A5S (shown above), and close-up shots of the A5H reveal what looks like a microSD slot and microUSB port. There's no mistaking the Archos 5's same gorgeous, 4.8-inch TFT display, though, which still gives us shivers (in a good way).

The FCC's testing report shows both models sporting 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and an FM transmitter and receiver. What's unclear is whether or not one of these models will support 3G mobile network connectivity, just like last year's SIM-compatible Archos 5G. I wouldn't bet against it, especially since all signs point to a September 15 Archos announcement for new devices running Google's Android OS.

Considering that Archos has already pulled back the curtain on its Netbook and PC tablet, I can't imagine that these new Internet media tablets aren't the 'droids we're looking for. Plus, Texas Instruments made it pretty clear back in February that we'd be seeing some Android-loving media players from Archos.

Misleading headline. By stating the "FCC Outs" the product makes it seem like they did not approve them.

Maybe your thinking "oust".

Funny that the Engadget article I linked to uses "out" in the title, but didn't raise any confusion. Still, to avoid confusion, next time I'll try "reveal" or "expose" or something equally pervy-sounding.

why does the FCC have to check all technology products ? it seem like these things fall out side of their names intent (Federal Communications Commission)

@ Don, the headline is fine. Exactly what any other editor would have, and did, say.

@ metomjr, that sort of comment should be sent to the editor via email. Don't bother clogging up the boards with that crap. You idiot.

metomjr - The same feeling here. I was more interested in the media tablet aspect than the FCC details in any case. Outs implies exposing a secret of another party without seeking permission. The article doesn't express that to me.

hamwyn - The FCC needs to approve every thing that (potentially) broadcasts for stray signals or noise generation. If you ever saw the noise on an analog TV generated by a non-resistive(?) spark plug on an engine you should understand.

Good to see all the Android devices that have been talked about over recent months being prep'd to hit the market.

"outs" usually means "reveals" to me, so I think the headline is fine.

The headline is not fine. I also thought FCC didn't approve it and the reason I clicked was to see why. Poor choice of words considering the context...

most articles seem to use the word "outs" when talking about the fcc revealing something, i think if something got rejected it would likely just say "rejects"

btw donald nice star wars quote, made me chuckle

There definitely will be a voice enabled version. Whether it launches on the 15th, I don't know, but there will be one.

I am confused now...I could not find a definition for 'outs' pointing to 'approved' or 'accepted'. Engadget says 'outed'....There is no definition for 'outed'.....
