Update: Apple Store has retrofurbished iPods

Update 8-21-09: Joachim Bean at TUAW e-mailed us to say that after receiving confirmation of his purchase, a follow-up e-mail canceled his order saying that the iPod he ordered "is no longer in stock." False alarm.

Here's some fun nostalgia for Apple fans. TUAW points out an oddity discovered while perusing the Web recently: the Apple Store is currently selling the original iPod and the first-generation iPod Shuffle online.

Apple first-gen iPod

The original iPod, circa 2001, for sale now at Apple.com.

They're refurbished, but it's unclear why Apple still has a backlog of the iPod model first introduced eight years ago and the original 4-year-old Shuffle model. But whatever the reason, you can buy one and it ships for free within 24 hours, according to the site.

The original iPod, the kind with a black-and-white screen and the original physical scroll wheel that wasn't touch sensitive, is selling for $129. The site says it's a 5GB version, but Joachim at TUAW notes that he ordered it and was told they'd be shipping him the 10GB version instead. The Shuffle (unbelievably) is selling for $99. For that you can store a whopping 240 songs and wear it with the old-style lanyard around your neck--no built-in clip here.

Great.

Too bad $teve Job$ is trying to keep employees from working at Google, Palm etc with back-door no hire agreements that according to Palm's CEO says is likely illegal and just plain wrong

Thanks for your non-relevant, waste-of-space post. You rock.

Isn't that what a Zune is for?

Were you really 'perusing' the web, Erica?
The verb peruse means ?read thoroughly and carefully.? It is sometimes mistakenly taken to mean ?read through quickly, glance over,? as in: later documents will be perused rather than analyzed thoroughly, a sentence that technically makes no sense.-Oxf.Dict.

Well, it was the TUAW blogger that found it, not me, as I say above, and he wrote that he was searching for some specific model numbers of iPods online. Sounds like reading carefully to me.

Great, although I bought a 4th gen video iPod for $99 on Woot. $129 for a 5gig or 10 gig device is a little nuts.

I have a feeling this is left over from a long time ago, since it's not accessible from the store's main page.

That, and the fact that the iPod shuffle is selling for $100.

Very cool, if you are a collector. What would have been cooler is to put a 120GB drive in an original iPod case.

I could be mistaken, but the original iPod can most likely use any 1.8" drive... but I'm hardly an expert.

I have 5 iPods but my 10 gig from 2002 is still my favorite. It's still on the original battery and is used daily in my car for listening to podcasts and to try out new music.

I agree with global-warming_is_BS. Good luck with whatever you decide to buy. Otherwise, what exactly is your point (other than showing your complete paranoia)??

Yeah, they sold more than 200 million ipods, presumably many of them are still in use.
by jason1692 August 21, 2009 7:06 AM PDT
without a succesful app store and superb marketing the zune hd will never win. sorry to pop your bubble. tho im glad someone finally came out with something that actually competes for a change. competition is never a bad word for the conumer. lower prices better quality and this has absolutly nothing to do with this article does it xD
by mngmikes August 21, 2009 7:56 AM PDT
to jason.... what do apps have to do with a media player? the zune has always been from day one a better media player than the ipod will ever be.... better sound and quality.
by o2bpitching August 21, 2009 7:57 AM PDT
um yeah sure. it doesnt matter if the device is good, the desktops software and the company who makes it still suck. So I'll stick with my iPods thank you very much.
by jason1692 August 21, 2009 1:22 PM PDT
to mngmikes/ for audiophiles nothing. but for normal people a mp3 player with is pretty good in a lot of areas(software, sound quality{dont shoot lol}, apps, screen, UI,music player, supporting software{yes i like itunes} etc) has more appeal than a mp3 player that is good at only one thing. tho ill admit the zune hd is the best competition so far the app store will, regardless, determine the outcome.

Apple's ipod interface had NO improvements from gen 3 until the touch was released :D :D :D

Yes, my iPhone 3G picks on my 30GB gen3 . . . but then the iPod sits on it's head for calling it names.

Nostalgia is one thing but paying 129 and 99 dollars for out of date products is a fool's game. I am pretty sure that people are right to assume that it is just something Apple never removed from their site. I mean i wouldn't either if I could convince people to purchase a device nearly a decade old.

On another note the Zune HD, no matter how impressive, will never even dent the ipod market. Apple has very carefully made sure that both their stores and their products retain customer loyalty. Off all of the mp3 fads I bought into I will say that iPods have been the most consistent and reliable (have purchased 4 ipods in 6 years all of which still work perfectly).

The photo that they have is a 3rd Generation iPod... and the phone number that they have now (-800-588-1911) directs you to another number for LIVE SEX CHAT!!! I couldn't believe it... this is obviously an old page. Wish it were true, though. I wouldn't mind having the first iPod I ever had. Wish I hadn't sold it back in 2002.

Hard to believe the iPhone came from the same company who gave us the 1st gen Shuffle. Then again, the 3rd gen model isn't much better. I suppose there's a market for it (other than cheapskate parents whose kids ask for iPods).
