CNET Poll

PS3 Slim: Hot or not?
Do you think the design of the new PS3 Slim is hot or not?

Hot: The new lighter and sleeker design is a winner
Not: The plastic matte looks cheap and the body is too square
For $300, I don't care what it looks like

View results

You've seen the photos and you've read the review, but how do you feel about the the PS3 Slim's design? The Slim is 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter than the older PS3s but it is now noticeably deeper than before.

The CNET New York office seems to be split down the middle. Some editors think it reminds them of a turntable, while others think it's a slick improvement. Editor Scott Stein sees the console's wideness as odd, while Justin Yu thinks the black matte has a vintage appeal.

There are varying reports from around the Internet as well. Dave Zatz said in his post Meet the PS3 Slim, now with more ugly!: "But this PS3 Slim with textured matte surface reminds me of some old plastic outdoor furniture we used to have. Or maybe a Foreman grill knockoff."

Whichever way you slice it, this new PS3 Slim is here to stay and it'll be the only one available once the current stock of PlayStation 3s are sold out. So what do you think? Is the new PS3 Slim hot or not?

Because the unit can sit vertically the style is less important. (Why ALL components aren't designed to sit both vertically and horizontally is a mystery). Actually, the main reason some people purchase the PS3 as their BR player is because vertical players aren't being marketed. Vertical placement not only means you don't have to "stack" it under/beside your TV, but also you can slide it behind the TV or nearby in an unobtrusive spot.

Wow.

Did all the Xbox fanboys at CNet break down and cry when the 300 dollar PS3 Slim was revealed?

I don't think they have any clue that gaming sites all over the Net are laughing their ***** off over the barrage of Xbot damage control articles being pumped out from CNet desperately tying to put a dent in the mass hysteria the PS3 Slim is generating in the console world.

@Glassner_S

Wow are you a drama queen. Xbox fans breaking down and crying and mass hysteria in the console world. Get a grip please. A constructive comment would be something like. Yes it is ugly compared to the old one but it will be nice to not have something that shows every fingerprint and gets dirty after a day.

really? i like it.

Look at the monitor / TV when ya game and watch BD movies its a HINT... No need to see or hear a console now with the slim
by happyslappy13 August 20, 2009 2:14 PM PDT
i think its great cause its only $299 and uses less power and still maintains everything the old ps3 had. so why not buy it, especially for people who dont have a ps3 yet. i think this would look great next to my 360 elite ;)

yes i think it would look GREAT next to mines also and i really do want to get it but lately i haven't got paid yet T-T
by bulletstorm1 August 21, 2009 6:31 AM PDT
I agree, the price of $299 for the PS3 is the best thing they have done. My only complaint is that I still have to spend $99 to play my PS2 games and $25 to stand this baby up.
by vito7272 August 21, 2009 1:02 PM PDT
"I still have to spend $99 to play my PS2 games "

Why? If you already have PS2 games, I'm assuming you already have a PS2???
by Lord_Lion August 22, 2009 8:44 PM PDT
The Slim doesn't quite retain everything: apparently, the controllers packed with the Slim no longer have pressure-sensitive buttons, which can affect games that use that feature (such as MGS4 and GTA4).
by matt6850 August 20, 2009 2:17 PM PDT
The way a console looks is irrelevant. People are not going to base their decision on which system to buy on how it looks. Price, features, and content is what really matters.

yea and with this console sony has hit a home run. and this is coming from an xbox 360 owner.
by Absolution2009 August 20, 2009 2:23 PM PDT
I agree, especially the price part since the economy is really bad.
by kalel33 August 20, 2009 3:04 PM PDT
Another 360 owner. I think Sony finally broke down and did what was needed, since they were getting spanked for so long. They have now just put real pressure on Microsoft. Sony's game library isn't quite to the level, for the games I like, compared to the 360, but the case for the 360 being cheaper has taken a hit. Kudos Sony and a well played strategy, which should have been done long ago.
by Electronic_Dreamer August 20, 2009 4:46 PM PDT
yea but what if it looked like a ***** would you buy it then? lol

re writing in a away so cnet cant censor me screw you cnet i said: what if it looked like a *****!!!!
by floyderman August 20, 2009 6:10 PM PDT
Yes definatly, but from another 360 owner i wouldn't go buy a ps3 just because of this price drop. Except for 2 or 3 games, the game library is the same. The only real upgrade is built-in Wi-Fi, and Blu-Ray.
by izmickey August 20, 2009 9:32 PM PDT
All of you guys who own the xbox360 and wrote such positive comments with no fanboyism are pretty mature. People should be happy about this price drop and its an absolute steal for what it offers. Hopefully the elite will go down to at least $250.
by theoboley August 21, 2009 8:00 AM PDT
@Floyderman

2 or 3 games..? I'd like to invite you to take a look at PS3's exclusive catalog.

Uncharted, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, resistance 1&2...etc.... I just outdid your 2-3 games in 3 seconds
by Absolution2009 August 21, 2009 8:14 PM PDT
There are a ton of Sony exclusive games on the PS3 what are you talking about? I think there are more exclusives on PS3 than the Xbox 360.
by BIGKrome September 1, 2009 7:22 AM PDT
Don't forget about KILLZONE 2!!
PS3 may be in 3rd for now, but no one can doubt the lasting power of PLAYSTATION.
Don't forget the PS2 was still kickin while the XBOX 360 was being launched, and the PS3 has not even unlocked 50% of it's true potential.... It's only a matter of time.

I do prefer the original body, but the price point is a welcome change! I might have to buy a second one for my bedroom! =)

im a 360 owner, but after hearing about this, microsoft better watch out, because at a $300 price, and with the features you get such as wi-fi and blu-ray built in, this is an amazing deal in comparison to anything microsoft can do with the 360.

Microsoft better get its design engineers lined up to get a new redesigned 360 onto the market.

Also, now i might just buy a PS3 just to have a second console.

I am an 360 owner as well.... I doubt microsoft will try to redesign the 360 they have way to much time energy manpower and money tied up with the next console (codenamed the Phoenix or 720) In late 2008 Microsoft trademakrded the name "Xbox Phoenix" and have begun developement. I serviously dount they will take the ime to miniturize the 360. I have had bad experiences with the PS3 ( 3 of em took a dump on me) so let see if the manufacturing is there after a year or two. As we all now Both Sony and Microsoft have had thier manufacturing defects and Bugs.

Its worth it havent touched my 360 since I got a slim... TRUST ME
by Swampthing777 August 20, 2009 2:30 PM PDT
In a console that invariably does nothing more than sit on a shelf, why o why o why are people getting themselves into a tizzy over this consoles new dimensions? I mean, seriously, has there really been this silent majority of gamers who have lamented the fact that their PS3 is too porky? (I mean thats not what has caused the PS3 to be third in the console wars right?)

That said, I think the real problem has always been price and so kudos to Sony for FINALLY deciding to take their heads out of the sand on that front...(Its not like anyone has ever suggested a significant price drop before...wink wink). Still, I really don't understand why they can't create a "budget" model as MS has done for so long. Let me have a PS3 for $200 and we might be talking... as my rant below will show, I can't justify a console switch considering my accumulation of 360 games.

So, does this price change do anything for me, a member of the gadget loving, buying public? Eh...maybe, down the road, but like I said, I've got a lot invested in the 360. After all, while Sony was busy putting out an admittiedly nice console at a relatively high price, I was busy buying games and establishing myself on the XBOXlive scene.

Now, i've got pretty much all the next gen console games that I want and I see no real reason to make the switch over to the PS3. Sure, I like new gadgets, but the Sony switch would require a huge re-investment in the PS3 games and for what? The graphics MAY be a teensy bit better, but that's been less of an issue for me then the quality of the game play itself which from everything I've seen would be identical on both consoles.(I.e. the game makers control the game play, not the consoles). Plus, as a die hard fan of the FPS genre I really don't spend much time admiring the architecture in the games I play. I'm too busy blasting my opponents.

Hence, IF the PS3 had been sold at this price, en masse at the beginning of the next gen console wars, it would have been a real contender for my money. Combined with Sony's free version of Xbox live I might have seriously looked their way.

Now, I have little or no reason to make the switch...sorry Sony, but my guess is that you're a little too little too late to try and win over the pre-existing 360 owners like me.

You are the first guy who makes sense about why some people choose to support a certain product. It's all about the consumer investments in that product that makes them attached to that product. That helps explain why some people are so darn passionate about defending their console. Hence fanboys. I agree with you completely that if the PS3 lauched at the same time as the 360 with the same price, 360 owners may be a minority. I don't think it's too little too late for some who already own the 360 or Wii to buy the PS3 once all the exlusives come out. I sure you will pick one up when MAG arrives. Right? As of right now the 360 kicks butt in FPS and is the best console to play them on. Great comment man.
by jwilson61904 August 20, 2009 4:06 PM PDT
Agreed about the looks not mattering. A lot of people thought the 360 was the ugliest of the current gen. consoles, but it doesn't seem like that affected sales.

As for not purchasing a PS3 because of the amount you have invested in your 360, you do realize that you won't have to give up your 360 if you purchase a PS3. And there are after all some pretty good exclusives on the PS3 and it does work nice as a Blu Ray player if you don't already have one. If you can afford it it's nice to have both. I do and don't regret either purchase.
by Jawknee1 August 20, 2009 4:26 PM PDT
oh yea your a real guinis. Still using regurgitated arguments from 3 years ago. Why dont you trying playing one or actually do some research. if you did you would see that the exclusives out match and out perform every xbox exclusive on the market. With an average rating for just about everyone of 9/10 or above. While mine sits on my self and gets used every single day, i could see why you would be bitter. more often then not your console is in the hands of UPS on its way back Mircosoft for repairs. Im so sick of hearing this nonsense from you dense, immature retards.
by sgoodell07 August 20, 2009 4:43 PM PDT
Oh, cmon Jawknee1, that is the most fanboyish response i have read yet on this forum. You attack him personally because he doesnt subscribe to your point of view? What are you 12? How much you have invested in a particular system is an important point. The $400 you would spend on a PS3 Slim (yes, I know, $300, +controller+game = more than 400 so I am being generous here) is $400 you could spend on the Xbox games that you want, or peripherals. The same can be said the other way as well regarding any console you may have.

The same old retread argument of the rrod is fine for those who dont really have a better argument or feel perticularly attached to their gaming console, something that is fun and useful but ultimately devoid of any real value.
by jwilson61904 August 20, 2009 5:12 PM PDT
@ sgoodell07

I still contend that how much money you have sunk into a system should not have a bearing on whether you a purchase another system. The original system can continue to be used even after the new system is purchased having no affect on the money spent previously on the old system.

However, to point out that the $340 dollars spent on the new system and controller is money that can't be spent on games is fair and a legitimate reason why not to purchase a new system if your not interested in its exclusives or in this case a Blu Ray player.

BTW, I left out the cost of the game above, because you can't say "I wouldn't spend the money on a game for this system, so that I can save money for a game that costs the exact same on another system." There is no net money saved.
by stigie78 August 20, 2009 5:23 PM PDT
are you stupid or what, ohhhhh i know, you are a f#@$%^ xbox 360 fanboy. you start playing just now and you are already making a comment about strategies?, sony has been in the game market far more time than microsoft, believe they know what they are doing. what do you think would happen if sony decided to make games for pc or mac, which company you think would be in trouble. I like ps3 and i realized it is (at the time) lacking games, but wait until next year and youll bite your tongue. talking about expensive...ha, you that have to buy a wi-fi connector, blue ray player and GOD KNOWS what else for your xbox to have a better-like-experience.
by ifuwereahotdog August 20, 2009 5:45 PM PDT
You make some good points, but do realize how many people have not made the switch yet? The PS2 sold 140 Mil, and the original Xbox around 25 Mil. That is 165 Million gamers last gen. Right now we're at about 55 Mil that have made the switch. There are a LOT of people that will jump at this.
by Slabtown August 20, 2009 6:56 PM PDT
In regards to Jawknees comments on what system is better, he claims the PS3 has "an average rating for just about everyone of 9/10 or above". Now, maybe you only meant that if you looked at only exclusives then the number would be what you said, but I wasn't sure.

I just went and added up all the reviews (I used IGN.com. Other sites will vary a little, but not enough to choose one over another) and for 577 reviewed games, the PS3 is averaging 7.33, while the 360's 912 reviewed games is at a 7.15 average.

And for the sake of saying my allegiance, I prefer the PS3, though I own both.
by Swampthing777 August 20, 2009 9:37 PM PDT
Glad to see some people feel as I do.

As to those who are currently crying to their respective mothers about how I said something that COULD be taken as disparaging against their beloved PS3 I don't have much to say. Your mommies will hold you and give you "the bitty" and you can be #1...not #2 and you'll feel better.

Contrary to some of the amazingly vicious commentaries, I am actually not a Microsoft funded troll. Even more shockingly, I actually like some Sony products; I've found that their music players produce stellar sound quality and I really like their cameras and the PSP.. The thing, is that brand loyalty is not what it once was. In todays world, a manufacturer can produce an A+ product one day and then a stinker the next.

I really don't care whether my console is made by Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony I really don't. What does matter to me is whether I enjoy playing games on that console. In regards to my analysis (personal decision guys and gals) about whether I want to plunk down any money for a PS3 is based on this simple determination;

Is there any benefit to playing COD2,3,4,5 on the PS3 over the 360? A: Possible some graphical benefit, though not guarunteed; The PSNetwork is free so there would be an annual savings of roughly $50.00over Xboxlive . Now, are these benefits worth switching from a perfectly good console, and having to buy the SAME GAMES all over again? A: If we stick to the #s and I look at the approx. cost of the games (I'll say $15, $20, $40 and $50 just for the COD collection) then unless you value the POSSIBLE graphical benefits, you come out spending $75 right off the bat in duplicate game purcahses. (BTW I do play all 4 current titles and more). Further, I've owned 3 360s so far. The first one I sold and is now 3 years old and going strong with no problems (According to its new owner) . The second Elite got the RROD and was replaced 2 year ago for free with a unit that is functioning fine so far...so i don't buy into the argument that 360s spend more time in the shop than in the living room.

Additionally, Its not like I can simply pop my 360 game disc into the PS3...soooo...that means buying the same game I already own and love, all over again simply to get the "PS3 Experience". For me this is the 360 investment makes a PS3 purchase based solely on the desire to own a PS3...not any other financial benefit or significant graphical benefit (If there is one).

Honestly, you can only play one console at a time and I cannot for the life of me see why I would go from COD on the 360 to COD on the PS3. As far as exclusives go...ok fine...therein may lie a reason to get one...if the exclusives are good enough... but for me the re-playability is really in the online multiplayer. Thats where 98% of my video game playing time is spent, so while the exclusives are all well and good, they may not equate to stellar online multiplayer play.

Further, and I know I am probably going to be labeled the devil for saying this but...I DON'T CARE ABOUT HD FORMATS!!!!!!!

That is, everyone adds to the PS3 mix the ol' "It has a great Blu-Ray player too so the price is worth it". See, while, the tech world has tried to convince me that I need to plotz myself over "High definition" I just don't care about it. Every human that I've ever seen in HD looks weird and the animated shows look strangely "Glowy" . With the exception of sporting events I can honestly say that I never watch anything in 720 or 1080 hd. Hence, for me, the blu ray player functionality is merely something I'd rarely if ever use...and hence I have no need to pay for its added cost.

My feeling is that Sony may derive satisfaction from knowing that they FINALLY won a format war. The sad part is, I don't think the world cares as much as it did with previous format wars. Plus, with physical media becoming passe, my guess is that Sony's victory will be short lived. (See: MS, Sony's + moves towards providing down loadable entertainment/gaming content).

End rant: Begin momma's boys squeeling:
by lil-yankee August 20, 2009 11:43 PM PDT
dear, Swampthing777
You have the first amendment right to the freedom of speech and both of your claims are legitimate to your sole being, ie in your situation and for the lack of a better word, "it makes perfect sense to you".
It so occurs that most of the people care about being under the "next gen cloud" solely because of HD, because both of this consoles advertised as providing better graphics and being able to broadcast or reproduce HD content.
Your argument is head on bashing the ps3 although you try to sell some objective about the subject. The fact is that you can buy the ps3 for its exclusives and play your already owned 360 games on your its respective console.
You were absolutely right though about something, if sony would have placed the ps3 since the start at this price or at least close to what the 360 cost, i could be very sure that the story would have been written differently but i have news to you, technology costs money. Microsoft recycled technology from the last gen (DVD, GHZ controlers (not bluetooth)) and pretty much made the device a puzzle for consumers to build it up the way they wanted (all of it being recycled technology), made the hard drive swappable but there is a cath (is only made by microsoft) which is no good news. They charge 100 dollars plus tax which is extraterrestrial when it comes to hd prices (you could get a 250 for 89 in amazon or a 500 for 130). so basically the monopolized that, on top of all they also charge a premium 50 a year to be able to play online (i would say is not much, but then is not free...... go figure)
so then in the other hand, you have sony trying to make this next gen with an actual next gen console.
They spent in the cell processor, they spent on blue-ray. they spent making wifi out of the box, bluetooth to connect controllers and peripherals that unlike microsoft (and this is for the ear pieces) can be had from any manufacture, the built motion control to their controller (although i did find the feedback better), got a slot loading and touch sensitive buttons, car reader and free internet gaming. lost 200 and some change in every console sold (cost 800 was sold for 599) and all you guys do is complain?
if you can afford it fine, thats one thing, but this thing is not expensive because sony is robing you, is just expensive. Obviously a cheaper price conducts to a greater volume ie (wii sales and DS sales), but cutting the price is a process, not a granted wish. They need to lower manufacturing, work on redesigns and all that and its time consuming.
I will agree with you on not buying a ps3, they way you put it makes perfect sence, but the way i see it, just use both for what they have to offer, i have both and play each exclusives. Like the ps3 for some task, like the 360 for others (had have 3 already) and lately being leaning towards my ps3 more, why ( E X C L U S I V E S )
if you see the catalog, youll see there are many things going for the ps3 and besides its new price, are its games.
You will see microsoft lowering the 360 to 250 because there is no way they can make a side by side comparison with the ps3 to justify its (the 360's $299) price, the 360 has been sold for a price over what it cost, why? ask Microsoft. I did pay lots of money for my ps3, about 679 for the first model with 60 GB, and i know it was worth it.
Which console is better is a subjective thing, there will never be a clear winner, but as of value and quality, please, be sure that the ps3 offers more for your bang than a 360 can dream of...........
Now you run to your mummi and ask her "why didn't you graduate and got a better job so that you could buy these things for me since im fat and i don't work and all i do is whine in cnets blogs because i want to make some friends"
Have fun jack (in a box)

"it is now noticeably deeper than before"

What does deeper mean? If Jeff is referring to the length from the front to the back of the console then he is mistaken. The console looks deeper because the the width is shorter. I had a concern about the depth of the console because the cabinet that I put my current PS3 is not that deep, but on IGN.com they had a video where they compared both PS3 side by side and it certainly was not deeper.

You need to know your facts before you post your articles and mislead people, Jeff.

You are misjudging the photos. Watch the IGN video of them unboxing the PS3 slim. They place the consoles together and they are the same depth from the front to the back.
by kewell82 August 20, 2009 3:34 PM PDT
Sorry I have to comment on this depth issue again.

On ZDNet.com they also have photos of unboxing the PS3 slim. There is one shot looking at the top of both consoles and you can clearly see that the depth on both are the same.

Ha Ha, how do you like that monkeyfun14 and Jeff? There is your proof.

The dimensions are on posted. It is apparently approximately 1/2 inch deeper. It is approximately 1.5 inches less in length.
by kewell82 August 20, 2009 4:22 PM PDT
Wow a whopping 1/2 inch deeper. Hey Jeff that sure is "noticeably deeper", NOT! (1/2 inch) Hey Monkeyfun14 I guess you were right by 1/2 inch.

Thanks blusky08 for that info.

It doesn't matter too much to me, but I personally don't think it's as good looking as the original. I just feel that if Sony would like to market this to more casual gamers, and inevitably people looking to get their first blu-ray player, that it would have been cool to make it look more like a standard home theater appliance. Something that would look at home in the usual A/V rack.

I agree with you. I am not 14 years old with the game system lying on the floor in front of a 20 inch TV in my bedroom. I am an adult buying one for my kids, placing it in the living room in the AV rack with my Sony 7.1 system and hooked to my Sony HDTV hanging on the wall. I wish Sony would release one of these consoles that looks like a standard AV component. If they want to change them from simply being game systems to being digital media entertainment hubs for the home, then stop making them look like a game system.

All of the equipment i have now are black with white and blue displays. Sony 7.1 receiver, Sony BD player, Dish HD receiver, Roku player, PS2 slim, Psyclone HDMI switcher, media extender. So what i would like to see is a standard looking unit with an information display. It could display a PS3 logo normally, but then tell me the game being played. audio or video media being played, friends coming on-line, whatever they want to put on there, just like on the front display of my HTPC system.
by jwilson61904 August 20, 2009 5:36 PM PDT
I agree that I like my game systems to better blend into the other A/V equipment in my cabinet. But in all honesty, and don't take this as me saying that the system looks great, it looks a lot like my Dish receiver from the front which is all I'll see in my entertainment center.

OK... seriously, why does anyone really care about the dimensions? Are you guys lugging these things around on your backs or trying to cram them into your pockets?

IT IS A CONSOLE! Not a portable!!!!

The only real issue as I have said is price, power consumption and performance. On those fronts Sony has made progress although lack of backwards compatibility is kinda a bummer. (360 does have some backwards compatibility btw).

Further, this only makes the PS3 even with the competitions most expensive model so its a move in the right direction. Still, in context, Sony is really only now getting their $h1t together while the other two have been eating Sony's lunch for last several years.

Again, when we are talking about the few cubic inches that we are, the dimensions matter not on a console!!!

umm...swampthing777. could you have possibly have missed the mark any more with your response? How do three posts talking about putting it in the AV rack and thus wanting it to look more like AV equipment and be less portable, translate into you ranting about it not being a portable?

im not hating the new look but the first PS3 is a better looking sibling. i'd get with the older sister. even though she's a little on the chunky side. lol

The big one looks pretty, but the slim one can do CEC HDMI.

keep ur eyes on the HDTV not the console
by synthetikz August 20, 2009 3:03 PM PDT
it doesn't look as good as the original ps3 in my opinion, but it still looks better than the xbox 360. the real coup here though is the price. you can tell just by the reactions of xbox 360 owners who are considering buying one now... and that's exactly what sony wants. it's a great move for sony. let's see what comes of it.

Not backward compatible means I will not buy one. Its that simple. Fool me once ....

My perspective is that it is disrespectful to the folks that supported Sony and Playstation to make their investment over the years useless. Its kind of like not leaving with the person who brought you to the dance.

Sony, make one where I can play the PS2 games and I will buy the PS3 machine and new games over time. Hope you are listening!

@ cbear64

Do you still play your original xbox games? Do you still play NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube games? I doubt it, why waste your time with old tech.
by rich12313 August 20, 2009 3:51 PM PDT
@kewell
Because those games were not as good as ps2 games. also there was not a massive amount of games. Over the years i have built a collection of over 50 ps2 games, i switched to xbox but still, when you invest that much, people want return on the investment,.
by kewell82 August 20, 2009 3:59 PM PDT
Well then keep your old console. That simple!
by AlnilamE August 20, 2009 7:43 PM PDT
@ cbear64: I agree with you. The problem is that the PS2 outsold the PS3 for two quarters this year, so it doesn't make sense for them to do it right now.

@kewell82: I do still play Xbox games, but more importantly I still play PS2 games and there are quite a few PS2 games I haven't even bought yet, let alone played. I agree with rich12313. We have made an investment over the years, and I'll be doing what you say: Keeping the PS2. It will remain sitting in the spot where the PS3 will go when they bring back BC.
by rob_93 August 20, 2009 7:53 PM PDT
Hint hint: with that $100 dollars you save by getting the PS3 with its price cut, get a PS2! Simple as that!
by cyberalert August 21, 2009 2:44 AM PDT
They use to, i have one. The Motor storm SKU. Look on the bright side with that $100 you save you can buy a ps2
by theoboley August 21, 2009 8:06 AM PDT
@Cbear64

I initially bought a ps3 because of its backwards compatibility (the 60GB model w/Emotion engine built in) Found myself using it maybe twice.. then that machine went **** up. I got a replacement, and havent put a Ps2 game in since. Backwards compatibility is a non issue... people want BC? Get a ps2 then and quit whining about it not being there in the ps3.

And for the record, No. Sony isn't listening to your pitiful little rant. And the people who have supported Sony over the years and bought their consoles (and took care of them) most likely still have them. Hence BC being ANOTHER non issue.

how is it not backwards compatible? i play my old ps2 games all the time on my ps3

Looks are a little better. Looks like a Linksys wifi device. In this economy, my current game systems are just that, staying current! I can't afford upgrades! But those who were holding out, this a great buy. 360 Elite prices coming down too this Sept? It's been rumored. I hope it happens.

Downplay is probably not the right word, try "Oversaturate". CNET has had at LEAST two acticles running at the same time about the PS3 slim. Ok so it lost some weight, big deal :- |
by jpaul89 August 20, 2009 3:47 PM PDT
Regardless, all the people that wanted a price cut so badly got it!
What did you expect? Sony had to cut costs somehow, so everyone should just be happy they got the $299 price point the so badly wanted.

I own a ps3 and the one flaw that I see with the new design is that it only has two USB ports. Usually I will use at least three. One for my external HD, one for charging my backup controller, and one for the cheap USB controller that I make my four year old use (because he made mine meat of my Sony brand). Granted, I may be in the minority regarding my port usage, but I have always liked that particular aspect. I was never really bothered by the size or texture of the PS3 in the first place so it is kind of moot.
I can say that I am a much happier PS3 owner now that I upgraded my CPU from Vista to Windows 7 RC. If you like to stream, use Vista, and plan to upgrade the install W7. W&RC It is stable, seamless to upgrade, and it will prevent a lot of headache's. So Kudo's to MS for giving PS3 owners the ability to stream content from Media Center (yes even HD video) to the PS3 without the third party software, hacks, and headaches.

Only the first couple SKU's had more than 2 USB ports...this is actually not new for the PS3
by hightechfanboy August 21, 2009 6:57 AM PDT
I seen some usb hubs at frys that run for $20 that are design especially for the ps3(I don't know if it'll fit in the slim version). Is a square hub that plugs into one usb and it blend into the console is preatty neat. Its has three usb ports and a sd and sony card reader. I know is an extra investment but I think is worth it if you really need more usb ports and don't want an usb hub hanging loose.
by sting7k August 21, 2009 11:10 AM PDT
The PS3 has only had 2 USB ports for over a year, maybe almost 2 now. Sony had to cut costs some where; the flash card reader and USB ports have been out for awhile now.
by KHartz November 17, 2009 5:45 AM PST
microcenter.com USB hubs 5 dollars and up the system needs only one...
by SargentSamurai August 20, 2009 4:05 PM PDT
I honestly don't give damn about what it looks like. The $299 price tag is the sexiest part to me.
