There may not be many hardware changes inside the PS3 Slim, but each new console will ship with the PlayStation 3 3.00 firmware update. Here's what you can expect:

There are a few minor cosmetic changes to the interface and XMB (cross-media bar). Most noteworthy is a new tab under the PlayStation Network icon called "What's New." It will highlight new featured downloadable content, news, etc., and will also be the first thing you see when powering on your PS3.

Firmware 3.00 will also introduce new dynamic theme support. These are much more involved than previous PS3 themes, with fully animated backgrounds and even the ability to change themes as the day goes on.

A status box in the upper right corner will give you a heads-up display of how many friends are online and your current message count. Below it, a ticker shows Sony news and information.

Fans of avatars are in good shape, with 3.00 introducing a brand new batch of selectable icons. There will also be "premium" avatars available for purchase in the PlayStation Store. Lastly, trophy support will now be distinguishable between base and add-ons so you can compare your progress among the two.

Sony plans to release firmware 3.00 soon and it will be available on every hardware version of the PlayStation 3.

the new ps3 will not let you install another os, is this because of the hardware or will the 3.0 update deny you from installing another os on the current ps3s?

Good question. I hope that is not the case. I still plan on running Ubuntu or other Linux OS on my ps3. I've been waiting to upgrade the hard drive first before I load a new OS.
by forever4now August 18, 2009 2:19 PM PDT
If they ship it with a modern browser that does or will eventually support HTML5, WebGL/O3D, etc., you essentially will have another OS that can run powerful web apps. It would be cool to be able to run WebGL/O3D browser games on it, in addition to standard PS3 games.
by celticbrewer August 19, 2009 12:12 PM PDT
mdub311, just so you know, when you partition the new HDD, you're still restricted to only 10GB for Linux (or only 10GB to the PS3 and the rest to linux). I was hoping with my new 320gig in there that I could partition, say, 50 Gig, but you're forced to work with default options- none of which are any good.
by vafifty4 August 19, 2009 4:17 PM PDT
I talked to a guy at Best Buy and he said that the second os on the original ps3 will still be possible on 3.0.
by aby26 August 18, 2009 3:50 PM PDT
SONY SHOULD ADD THE OTHER OS FEATURE IN THE SLIM PS3 OR MAKE THE INBUILT BROWSER COMPATIBLE WITH ALL FEATURES .DO THIS SONY.

Sony is ********. I can say that because I'm a big PS3 fan and I used to work for Sony's Western Headquarters. Nobody cares about the things that they did to the XMB. I have an Xbox too and the interface is miles ahead of Sony's. I never play my xbox but when I turn it on to watch a Netflix movie, I'm in awe at how much better it is. One thing that PS3 needs is universal chat. With Xbox, you can turn it on and start talking to friends and join games together. PS3 you need to have ten workarounds... I just use my cellphone. The XMB is ******** and is embarassing. Sony should be embarassed about having such a sexy new console and a ******** interface.

Mircosofts NXE is just another rip off. They ripped of the interface design from Apple.

by sting7k August 19, 2009 7:08 AM PDT
@Jawknee1, where is the NXE seen on an Apple product that they stole it from?

I like the NXE, it's a lot easier to use and nicer looking than the blades it launched with. But they didn't really improve the speed at all. In fact sometimes it just flat out lags and hangs for almost 10 seconds. I do agree I don't like the XMB at all and doing things like trying to talk to friends and join games is a hassle.
by theoboley August 19, 2009 7:51 AM PDT
Next thing you'll **** and Moan about is that it doesn't have backwards compatibility. Come on now Vic.... let's hear it.
by theoboley August 19, 2009 7:52 AM PDT
@sting7k

take a look at any Mac computer. You'll see what he's talking about
by Absolution2009 August 19, 2009 8:19 AM PDT
Microsoft also hired Apple developers so that's probably why it looks like Apple's OSX. If you don't believe me google this.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 8:23 AM PDT
Theo: Backwards compatilbility? Who cares about that? People that purchase an advanced machine like a ps3 to play bitmapped software don't deserve this type of equipment. Anyways, I'm a Sony fanboy so don't get me wrong. I own a 60" Sony Grand Wega to play games on with a Sony STR-DA777ES amp and some nice $500(each) ES Speakers. I used to work for them... a good place to work, but the XMB they made is weak and not up to Sony standards...
by victor_4488 August 18, 2009 4:21 PM PDT
Can somebody please buy an Xbox for the PS3 XMB guys so that they can see how lame their XMB really is? In business, I thought you were supposed to be aware of what your competition is doing and make something better... Xbox 3 steps forward, PS3 three steps back (but looking good doing it). SONY! Give us a better interface! WITH GLOBAL CHAT!

ONCE AGAIN! Miscrosofts Xbox interface was ripped off. They stole the idea from Apple. Ever use the iPod on an iPhone? take a look and you see it has nothing original about it. Also if the XMB is so lame then why did MS rip it off to for their Media Application that comes with Vista?
by kingrah1 August 18, 2009 5:54 PM PDT
PS3 does NOT step back, hardware wise, it is the most advanced gaming console
by darkr August 18, 2009 8:08 PM PDT
how is NXE even close to apple's interface? btw iphone was designed after xbox 360 btw if you look at the media center interface which was designed in 2003 (windows xp media centre) only difference is that apple allows you to use your finger to switch songs where you use a joystick for nxe and i'm sorry but blockbuster and many other companies who predate iphone have websites who have similar interfaces blockbuster.ca its called a banner where you can have a runing banner where you can access different items by clicking it hence why apple cannot patent the idea only the way you interact with them (multitouch)\

even more recently the NETFLIx
oh and my favorite windows vista task manager even windows xp 3d taskmanager i forget what

and the interface for mediacenter vista lol do your research omg if you go back on your history
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-media-center/default.aspx

mediacenter interface predates xmb (try windows media center XP 2003)
please do your research before bashing any company btw i own a ps3 not a xbox
by sting7k August 19, 2009 7:09 AM PDT
@Jawknee1, I do not see any resemeblence to the iPhone's iPod to the NXE.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 7:30 AM PDT
I agree that Xbox's interface is like Apple's. That's because Microsoft has brains and realizes that the apple interface is best. Who do you think was the first to develop windows? Yup Apple was the first to develop that interface on their Macintosh platform... The XMB is like Fred Flintstone's car and the Xbox interface is like the Ferrari California! I'm talking about the software (firmware) not the hardware. Who cares if the XMB is original... maybe it's original because all the other companies see it as lame and don't want to copy it. Everyone is copying the Apple type interface just like they copied the Macintosh type GUI... Sony, GET A CLUE. Give us a NEW interface... NOT "home" which takes years to load and is beyond lame. Sony, get over yourself and do what's best for your gamers and you WILL SELL MORE!
by tcr071 August 19, 2009 7:46 AM PDT
Ripped off from Apple? Um. Sorry to burst your Apple Fanboy bubble but the Microsoft Xbox was released before the iPhone came out and Microsoft Media Center, from which NXE is based on, was released in 2003.

And really, if you want to get down to it, Microsoft demonstrated very similar features when Surface was first shown years before the iPhone was released. If anything Apple copied Microsoft's surface features but I'm not going to make that argument because unlike yourself I'm not a humongous fanboy moron.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 8:31 AM PDT
We are digressing... Who cares who ripped off who and what predated what. It's all about Sony not choking the chicken all day to relase a bunch of bs and rev the version count up. The XMB is outdated and needs to be updated. We need features that will help us coordinate with other players such as GLOBAL CHAT! the more we can play together seamlessly, the more we will use the console and the more people we will recruit to buy the games and buy the console/accessories. This thread is not about who copied cho... it's about giving PS3 gamers what they paid for.
by Rod Roddy August 19, 2009 9:32 AM PDT
Hopefully this new firmware update will include a self-destruct feature :D ...oh wait Sony already did that, nevermind.
by celticbrewer August 19, 2009 12:22 PM PDT
I like the XMB. It's fast and intuitive. I don't care if it's flashy or whatnot. It works- it gets me to the content I want. That's what a user iterface is supposed to do. If you xbox and apple people want to stare at your GUI all day, be my guest. I'll be playing a game or watching a movie.
by visualingo August 20, 2009 6:13 PM PDT
@victor_4488 "Who do you think was the first to develop windows? Yup Apple was the first to develop that interface on their Macintosh platform"

If you're going to spout out information with this much confidence, make sure you're right. Xerox was the first company to put windows in a GUI... Google it. Apple took that from them after Jobs visited Xerox.

Apple rarely invents the wheel, they just make the wheel shinier and smoother.

Sony should start planning for a WebGL/O3D-based games console. Chrome OS is likely to support WebGL/O3D natively, so they could even use Chrome OS, as the operating system, and build a bunch of web apps & services around it.

Search for "O3D" in YouTube, to see some demos of it. It looks awesome!

You just have to look at the web browser technology that has been demonstrated by Google and others (HTML5/Gears, O3D, Native Client, V8, etc.). If Google can successfully pull all the stuff together, into a lean, blazing fast package, it is going to be awesome!

The era of desktop applications has passed & the era of powerful web applications has begun. VERY exciting!
by tcr071 August 19, 2009 7:43 AM PDT
The era of desktop applications has passed and the era of powerful web applications has begun? For who? You and fifteen of your friends. There are about a billion other people out there using their desktops that literally have no idea what you are talking about. The "era of powerful web applications" might not ever see the light of day and if it does it certainly won't be within the next 15 years.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 4:17 PM PDT
15 years? Are you serious? Moore's law says that the density of processors doubles every 2 years. The speed of technology is lightning fast. If you seriously think that webapps will take 15 years to take off you don't know what you are talking about. Corporations are moving their systems to webapp platforms in droves. 15 years from now is a LONG time with regards to technology.
by chrkeller August 19, 2009 4:28 AM PDT
Nothing major, but some cool stuff. I like the idea of animated themes. I have been making my own themes for a while now, I wonder if there is any programs to allow one to make their own animated themes?

My brother installed linux on the PS3, that web brower is actually as fast as the PC.

This is all piffle. Trivial nonsense. ooh, new avatars! dynamic themes! yay!

The ps3 is powerful computer and capable of so much, but sony keeps dribbling out irrelevant little updates.

I'm in agreement with most here...they need to updated the interface. XMB is just ugly and cumbersome. I wonder if they have fixed the bluetooth connectivity issues (i.e., hard to connect some devices or losing connection.) It's very annoying to be playing a game for an hour to suddenly have the controller go out on you and need to restart the system.

And I own a PS3, 360 and Wii so don't think I'm a fanboy. I just use what's best and I play my XBox 360 the most followed by the PS3 which I primarily use for movies.

I only own a PS3, Wii, and a few computers at the moment so can't compare anything with the 360, but I have had my 160gb for about eight months and have never had a controller suddenly go out and need to restart the system. I like the fact it uses bluetooth for its controllers - I have had wireless controllers in the past that ran on 2.4ghz and they were totally unreliable (official and unofficial controllers).
by lawgone August 19, 2009 1:53 PM PDT
I'm on my second unit and had it happen with both.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 2:01 PM PDT
Sony's bluetooth has been great for me. I've never had any problems. Only gripe is that you have to delete your bluetooth headset profile from the PS3 if you want to use it with your phone again. Easiest way to make sure that headsets work is to delete the profile from your phone then pair with the PS3, and opposite when you want to use it with your phone again. Controllers have never given me any issues. It's a solid product (hardware-wise). It runs a little hot but that's forgivable... XMB is embarassing though.

PS3 should grab Hulu then. That would work just as well. Maybe not as good as Netflix, but better a seed in the dirt than nothing at all.

Hey, look into Tversity... It's a media server that you can use to stream content from hulu, youTube, etc to your PS3... I use it and it's stable. It uses on-the-fly transcoding so that you can play media files seamlessly on your PS3 regardless of filetype. Best part is that it's FREE.

Why is it that every success that Sony does all the kids come in and storm, "OH MY XBOX ROCKS PS3 SUCKS!"

You can tell a lot of them are kids because of their comments. Games people, look at the games. The Linux interface? If you use Ubuntu or any linux OS compared to windows, you'd understand. It's smoother. Only bad thing is it has Apple's problem. Software compatibility.

Success that Sony does? Like what? Not being able to impliment global chat? Releasing chat for XMB, but when a game starts you're all cut off? How can you seriously expect gamers to coordinate when there are so many roadblocks? Killzone 2 is such a work of art, but have you ever tried to play with another person? It's a nightmare. Sony needs to sit down and not only consider "smoothness" but also what the XMB needs to do to support group coordination and game play. Stop wasting time "making it smoother" and add relevant features. Smoothness? not as important as usability and feature-set in my book. Sony, realign your priorities! Realize that "home" was a mistake and give us the ability to play together seamlessly.
by lil-yankee August 19, 2009 12:53 PM PDT
I agree with you, i dont know w h a t t h e f # $ k these kids want from sony.
Is funny though. They say some much and half of them dont even have a ps3.
The fact is that the ps3 has some minor issues but for the most part is an
awesome all in one device and absolutely the best hardware ever assembled
for the sake of gamin, (unless its one of them alien ware pc's) people complained
because it didnt have games, now it does, so guess what they gathered in a town
meeting (just like these health care rallies) came out with another idea.
how about price? they said and then determined that it was too high (of course
we are talking about lower middle class americans here) and complained.
Well, sony did lower the price and guess what, made it smaller, thinner and lighter.
now they want to chat!!!!!!! lol, this is so funny. I mean the only way to win americans
over is with a heavy propaganda campain put ot weasel news(aka fox) and have
their incompetent yet widely accepted broadcasters sell the pot to us and
we wil as history shows just buy and smoke.
Sony is doing is best, is just that bad image from past ventures that hurts them.
I like my ps3, never had an issue with it, is like my mac, but jesus, yeah
the xbox has a more attractive interface full of green and avatars and stuff but heck
the thing has like a 52% rate of damaging and yes google it even the later models
say something about that. isnt that what you say of apple, looks good but sucks?
well be constant people, im not trying to defend sony is just that you guys make no sence.
The ps3 cost lots of money cause all of the $ h i t that it had but why does the elite cost 399?
ask yourself that and to be fair just look this up, before you start trashing

http://www.pcworld.com/article/170411/ps3_slim_vs_xbox_360_price_fight.html/

hope that helps!
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 1:07 PM PDT
Why do Sony customers always have to ask for stuff when Xbox i on point and just delivers... you don't see xbox users complaining about not having this and that... a little forsight on sony's behalf would be nice... are they really that dense at SECA?
by Absolution2009 August 19, 2009 2:16 PM PDT
Most of the heavy (stress heavy) complainers are those that are Xbox 360 fanboys. Now, I'm not saying that both sides have people who hate their own console but if you took a poll on people who have Xbox 360 and hate it and who has PS3 and hate it, I'm pretty sure more users of Xbox will hate it because of the RROD and E74 BSOD.
by victor_4488 August 19, 2009 2:47 PM PDT
OMG are you still smoking? This converstion is about the XMB and the Xbox experience UI. It's the INTERFACE that is in question. It has been covered that the PS3 has better hardware. That's not what is in question. The question is whether or not Sony has developed a good user interface. I feel that Sony has not provided PS3 users with the same dedication to excellence and innovation that Microsoft has given to its Xbox users. MS continually tries to set the bar in features and usability while Sony is tweaking the "what's new" icon and its dynamic wallpapers.... does that make sense to you?
by hink1124 August 19, 2009 9:12 AM PDT
No matter if the Xbox 360's interface is a rip off or not, the bottom line is that they have it, and it's far better than the PS3's. I love my PS3 but hate it's dogmatic network interface. The PS3 interface needs a total overhual. Sony needs to shell out some coin to get some serious players on their side. Netflix is huge! Luckily, I was able to find a way around the whole Netflix-PS3 block. Sony needs to swallow its pride and not worry about reputations. Hell, admit you had an inferior interface, plain and simple. Correct it, then distribute. You've made a great console, now lets get the most out it before its too late and blow Microsoft out of the water!

victor_4488 , You go get PlayOn for a one-time $20 instead of paying for xbox live gold. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon VOD, YouTube, ESPN, Adult Swim, Spike, Food, and dozens and dozens more.

Nice I'll have to check that out. Thanks!
by Absolution2009 August 19, 2009 9:21 AM PDT
Um...use the chat system before you type that. It's not bad, I mean it does what you want it to talk to people. It just looks different and some people don't like different I guess.

Smoothness is always high on my list. I play games for the content, not so I can chat with friends and tell them, " OH DOOD! I just killed this boss!" Ok...good for you. Or, "I just got this cool item in Fable 2 (btw awesome game but too short)." Ok, cool don't bother me I'm trying to play this game and enjoying the content. If it's a shooter, I stick shooters with PC-mouse and keyboard is way faster and better control. Plus, ventrilo rocks.

I hate how when people think games, they have forgotten that smoothness and content is what makes a game good. Who the hec cares how fast you beat the game etc., I mean, don't you just want to enjoy the game and the developer's creative ideas? Yeah, gloating is fun but have that conversation over and over again and it's just dull. CONTENT people, CONTENT and smoothness of game play!

What? I though this thread was about the XMB and it's downfalls, not smoothness of games? There is no question that the PS3 has the best games and "smoothness" (whatever the heck you mean by that technical term). Global chat is used to coordinate tactical maneuvers in a FPS. If you are spanking your monkey by playing Fable 2, what do you need global chat for? It does not pertain to you and you should not comment. As far as FPS on a PC... why are you talking about THAT? This is a thread about the PS3...
