For all those who've been waiting for the PS3 to drop in price from $399 to $299, that day apparently has finally arrived.

While Sony has yet to make an official announcement, Kmart.com features an ad on its home page that reveals a price cut and appears to announce the arrival of the new PS3 Slim.

Clicking on a preorder button from the Kmart.com home page leads to this.

Additionally, Kotaku has posted an image of an apparent promotional poster that a reader sent in, announcing price cuts for the 80GB PS3 ($299), as well as for the 160GB bundle ($399).

We're off to a press event at Sony headquarters in New York, where we expect to hear more about all this and perhaps get word on that "new" PS3. We'll update this post as soon as we get more info. (Update: The New York event was dedicated to new line of Sony wireless audio products. Now the focus shifts to Sony's press conference in Cologne, Germany. Check out the live coverage from our sister site, GameSpot..)

uhm.. do you honestly believe there isnt a price cut coming for MS too?
Sony has barely turned a profit on the PS3 .. now with this price cut (alleged) they will make even less.. MS has been profitting all last year and can afford to cut pricing... so "Took you long enough" should be "Too little to late"

Can anyone tell me if this PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS2 games?

Hopefully but probably not, Sony seems to have abandoned that.
by bullzeye20 August 18, 2009 8:05 AM PDT
Backwards compatible is pretty unnecessary, why by a ps3 to play ps2. I own a backwards compatible ps3 and have never put in a ps2 disk why play old games, get over them. Or by a 160gb ps3 slim and ill trade you for my backwards compatible version.

Ha, those first to post guys kill me! Well I can't believe it, but I do believe a PS3 will be in the near future for purchase, primarily for the blu-ray. My kids and I use the Wii for gaming, but I suppose I will pick up a PS3 game every once in a while ... hmm GT5!

I may actually buy one. I just hope they keep the same quality that the original has. I still say that it is hands down the best built console out there.

No, the highly underrated GameCube was pretty much the best built console out there. That thing is a freakin' tank! Did you ever see that video where those guys pretty much raped all three of last generation's consoles and the Gamecube survived? That was pretty funny.

what did i tell you people 2 months ago!! the rumors are real!!!! now who's talking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was right the whole time!

its always true when company says "we do not comment on speculation or rumors." like sony said in june.

i was and am always a true believer in rumors like that. and now its confirmed to be true.

Might they sell the original PS3 for $299, but the updated configuration for $399?

Now i wonder what new things xbox360 fanboys will come up with to bash on the ps3?

Maybe this? http://kotaku.com/5339555/report-xbox-360-failure-rate-over-50-percent
by izmickey August 18, 2009 7:36 AM PDT
hmm isnt that bad for the xbox360??? Well the ps3 is a STEAL at this price. Too bad my bro bought his xbox360 for that price. Now they have to price the elite for $250. Anything more than that, its just OVERPRICED.
by Swimming_Bird August 18, 2009 7:54 AM PDT
Wasn't there talk of a price drop for 360's too. Last I heard it rode on if Sony pulled the trigger first. If that is the case then i guess we can thank Sony for price drops on two systems.
by Jawknee1 August 18, 2009 8:22 AM PDT
its rumored MS will drop the price of the 360 Elite model to $299. Thats still too much. Anyone who bought a 360 Elite then complained the PS3 cost too much is effing crazy. Most good stand alone Blue ray players cost $299. Yes i know theres ones out there for 150 to 200 but those are crappy Magnavox and Vizio players. If you want a quality player like a Samsung or Sony your going to spend about 300 or more. the 360 will not compete with the PS3 if they are both priced at $300. Its insane to think your getting a better value by going with MS. Especially now that its been confirmed that the 360s failure rate is hovering around 54% The only thing more pathetic that that failure rate are the people who continue to buy 360's. I bought one in Jan 2008. Its been sent to MS three times. I threw it in the trash and sold all my games.

AMEN, Swimming_Bird....preach
by myles taylor August 18, 2009 7:27 AM PDT
I might actually buy one in that case. I just can't justify $400 for JUST the console. $300 makes it a little more doable.

Where theres your problem, its not JUST a console. it does much more then just play games. Obviously its one of the better Blue Ray players on the market, it acts pretty much like a super comupter, comes with and internet brower, the PSN has made great stides in the last year. Its at least on par with XBL and i would even go as far to say is better because its free. You cna change the hardrive your self, i picked up 500gb 2.5 SATA drive from Amazon for 85 bucks. you can attached a 1Tb external hard drive, you get pick up a wireless key board and mouse and turn your TV and PS3 into a desk top. It has built in wifi, no need to spend another 100 bucks for a wifi adapter like MS wants us too, the power supply is housed inside the console, no gigantic brick like the 360. I own both a 360 and a PS3, i was all about the 360 until i got the PS3. The PSN wasnt great when it first lauched but now its all i use. i could justify paying 50 bucks a year(even if it is only 5 bucks a month) for a service that i could get for free with Sony. Also its much quiter, i dont have to contact Sony and pay inflated costs for a bigger hard drive, my 360 has died on me 3 times, my PS3 never.

This is a good move by Sony. If MS ends up dropping the price of the Elite to $299 who would seriously pick an Elite over a Slim PS3? Seriously, Its a Blue Ray player/game console/all purpose media device. You cant go wrong.
by chrkeller August 18, 2009 7:28 AM PDT
The only way I would ever pick up a slim ps3 is if it played ps2 games. I have a huge library of great ps2 titles I still play from time to time. As of right now I am thrilled to be an owner of the original ps3 with hardware BC.

it will, Sony has been working on a Firmware update for the people who werent able to pick up the original 60 and 80gb models that had B/C. I bet they will tuck B/C away on Firmware update 3.0.
by partoflife August 18, 2009 9:22 AM PDT
Why dont you just use your PS2 to play your old games?????????? Everyone in the world has one of those or you could just drop 99 bucks for one. Why this outcry to play PS2 games?
by MasterMike13 August 18, 2009 7:44 AM PDT
Bout time sony got off their high hourse maybe they will splurge on the 5 dollars it costs to make it backwards compatible and actually give nintendo and microsoft a run for their money.

Wow. The "I predicted this" needs to stop. I predict that the PS3 will be set at an even lower price sooner or later.

When this time comes, I will be sure to be the first to link back to this post - just because that's logical - and useful for everyone.

Seriously, $400 wasnt a bad deal for this monster of a machine. I wonder how many of you who are complained about the PS3s 400 dollar price bought a Elite 360. They are the same price and you get MUCH LESS with the Elite. Please, if you were sucker and bought a 360 Elite, please dont complain about the $400 price of the PS3. Theres a reason the PS3 cost $400, not reason the Elite should have cost that much except MS greed.
