For all the breathless pontificating and predicting on the worst-kept secret in tech, the Apple tablet, most pundits have pointed to Apple's traditional September press event as the likely launch point for this new product.

Now, some are saying that Apple's unconfirmed September confab will be primarily about music devices, and any tablet PC will remain under wraps until sometime in 2010. According to Mac news site The Loop:

Very reliable sources familiar with the product have said speculation of the tablet being introduced during the September event are flat-out wrong. The Apple tablet, they said, would not see the light of day until the first part of 2010.

Helping this rumor rise above the ill-informed fray is that it was reported by former MacWorld Editor at Large (and sometimes CNET blogger) Jim Dalrymple. Are we going to have Apple tablets this holiday season? Or will we be waiting until sometime next year? Sound off below!

New York native Dan Ackerman, a former radio DJ turned journalist, has written about technology and music for publications including Spin, Blender, The Hollywood Reporter, and USA Today. He hosts the weekly Digital City podcast and the New York edition of Editors' Office Hours. Dan's new album, Tales Out of Night School, is available now. E-mail Dan.

Who cares? I have my iMac (new and G5), my Macbook, my iPhone, and my iPod(s). I don't need another "i" anything for the foreseeable future!

Dude... who says you need to buy anything at all? Just because there is a tablet, doesn't mean you have to plunk the cash on it...

I can see the Macbook and Imac. But an Iphone and Ipod? Really man, IBelieve you need to lay off on the Ispending spree . This is a Recession after all... and you do have a too much

Iagree with v12vanquish1! Are you insane?

@ v12vanquish1 and crcmt

The problem with coming to conclusions based on your own experience and failing to understand that other people do things differently to yourself is that all too often you end up looking silly.

Technically I own 2 iPods as well as an iPhone but that does not make me over indulgent. For normal iPod use my iPhone obviously does that well, but I purchased the iPhone for its phone abilities not to replace an iPod.

One iPod is very old and probably should be trashed but I keep it for sentimental sake. It was great in its day and I got 3 great years out of it before I upgraded to a 160 gig classic. The iPhone may have superseded it for most everyday use but I use it to back up my entire music collection which is too extensive to fit on the iPhone. It also is the source for the music I play during the classes I teach and when I go on vacation its huge hard drive is great for taking extra radio shows, podcasts, and audiobooks and the great battery life makes it perfect for audio in the car.

So yes I have iPods as well as an iPhone but that is not so extraordinary and they are a reasonable part of my daily life both for business and pleasure. There is nothing odd or insane about Daddio2009 having iPods and an iPhone.

OTOH @Daddio2009 I am an artist and I am eagerly waiting to check out an Apple tablet. I suspect it will be the perfect device for sketching on and I can see lots of other professionals also thinking it could easily be applicable to their work (or play). We have to wait and when it arrives make the decision as to whether or not it will be a wise investment for our individual circumstances.

I for one don't think that we will the tablet until Q1 in 2010 but I'm looking forward to that new iPod touch with that might have a camera as I am a 1g iPod touch user and I didn't buy last year.

I think we'll see the tablet for sure next September. Honestly, if all they're doing to the current iPod line-up is potentially adding cameras, do you really think Apple will be able to come up with their typical 1-2 hour keynote speech? No. The iPod Touch will be just like the iPhone if this is the case and there will be nothing new for Apple to show off. They're going to need a product to be the spotlight of this September event and the iPods are not going to be it. It also won't be the MacBooks since they were updated earlier this summer. However, a potential update may be the Apple TV, but would an update of that product really wow the crowds like Apple usually does? No. I think we can bet on the Apple Tablet at the September event.

Have a Mac book Pro coming, the iTablet can wait. It is intriguing though.

I don't think there is an tablet, I believe at best the so-called "itablet" is a Apple red herring at worse hyperbole from the press.
There have been tablet rumors on mac forums going back a decade. The only difference I see now is that more people and press seem to be taking an interest.

Forget Apple. Where is Mike Arrington and his Crunchpad? The end of July is long passed, where is the press conference?

If there is an iTablet, then two factors will make it a success:

1) The potential uses it might have, whatever they may be

2) Its "wow" factor

Its potential as the device of the future can be highlighted at any point throughout the year... however, its wow-factor will be maximized during the holiday shopping season. For a new product that belongs to a segment that is pretty washed up as it is, Apple can't afford a soft release - it has to be big. iPhone big. Q1 2010 is not the best time to release such a product to the public, as most of us will still be rebounding from our holiday shopping spree. However, a release in late Q3/ early Q4 will get most ppl drooling for this device and increase the likelihood that there will be a huge launch that will drive its success...

If there even is an iTablet.

Personally, I can't wait for it. Just as much as I couldn't wait for the iPhone to arrive. It will be interesting to see just what kind of functionality it will offer. If it is for viewing movies and surfing the internet, or essentially a tablet-type netbook, I'm in. I want a device that fits between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro 13in. If it also acts as a control surface for my Macbook/iMac, so I can more easily navigate Garageband, for example, I'm definitely in. If it also runs programs like Garageband, allowing me to use it as an ultraportable recording studio, I want to lay a deposit now - regardless of when it comes out. It is a niche device, no doubt, but a niche that I want filled asap.

I personally am hoping for a September release. I have never owned an iMac of any sort. My only Apple device is my iPhone which I love. If Apple holds true to the $800ish pricing and runs the Apple OS it will make the device inexpensive enough to allow a PC guy try it out. Also, I haven't encountered any great tablets yet. I think Apple may be the one to do it!

Either way, I wish Apple would post something about the tablet on their website. Everyone knows something is going on, Apple needs to come clean with what it is that they are doing!

Oh great...now we have to constantly hear rumors about the Apple Tablet for another 3 months at least.....

I hope that it's announced in September, even if it isn't released.....anything to shut up the people who constantly are speculating.

I DO want an iTablet. So I can change my netbook. Today I use netbook + iPod Touch 2G + Sony Ericsson K850i (this one I use like a camera because is Cybershot 5.0mp with flash xenon).

Someday, (when iPhone get better with battery life + camera with xenon + with more megapixels and Apple iTablet arrive I'll use just iPhone + iTablet. hehe
