PS3 Slim video: Real or fake?

Recently, a shaky, grainy video of what may or may not be a PS3 Slim turned up on YouTube (Engadget says it's supposedly a "stolen" PS3 slim that made its way to a street market in the Philippines). However, it's of such poor quality that it's really hard to tell what's what and it looks pretty dubious to us (and other blogs as well).

The "console" in the video does appear to be a little bit smaller than the current PS3 and there's quick flash of the new PS3 logo that we saw in earlier spy shots of an alleged PS3 Slim shipping box.

What do you guys think? Real or fake?

It looks completely fake. To me it looks more like the slimmer PS2.

SONY CEO: howard.stringer@am.sony.com

Ask him if it is real.

seems real... it could be some unfinished or unpolished ps3 slim stolen in china while in the factory and made its way here in my hometown.. i will call some store owners that I know in Greenhills (alleged shopping center where it was found) if its really true and functional...

here in the philippines, a lot of shrewd chinese businessmen bring stuff from hongkong and sell them thru gray market.. i bought my ps3 in greenhills too, got the lens busted in a month and had it replaced (poor me, no warranty for products here in gray market)

please stop the racism -- being the 3rd world country, philippines, where such stuff is impossible to be found first.. since here we have iphones, x360s, wii and alot of gadgets that are not officially launched before they are even launched in the US.. and mind you, filipinos do not get these stuff in the philippines but the foreigners (chinese, indians, etc)

i hope this clears out a lot of racist minds..

It's real! Video taken from a cellphone. Completely, 100% REAL!!!
by Nick.Kentros July 13, 2009 10:18 AM PDT
I don't know, it looks pretty much like the leaked photos. If those are real is probably just as important of a question

if it is real, looks like a nice update, maybe a new, sleeker system, lower price, and great exclusives bundle (like Killzone2 and MGS4) will finally get PS3s selling. They are impressive pieces of technology, they're just so far behind the xbox and wii in sales, it's a shame for such a great machine

The video is of such low resolution and so shaky that it's hard to make a judgement. It could be real or fake. But the question then becomes, if it's real, where did it come from?

If the video was real why not shoot it in good quality? The only reason to make videos low resolution and jerky is because they are trying to pass something fake off as real.

or because you stumbled across it at a market by chance, not planned, and only had your crappy cell phone camera on you.
by jackanddaxter July 13, 2009 11:53 AM PDT
maybe they couldnt afford a better camera or cellphone like we could in USA. I dont even have a cellphone to be honest.
by kirobz July 14, 2009 1:50 AM PDT
Mind you but i see far better phones in the Philippines than here in US...
by zgreenwell July 14, 2009 2:50 PM PDT
Because they're trying to take a video with their cell phone while not getting caught with the product they just stole.

The one thing I am most curious about is why Sony would change the logo on it. But yeah, too shaky to be believable right now.

because the first logo was stolen in the first place.. i expected better.. but im just glad they redeemed themselves with that beast under the hood that is the ps3

i think it might be both. A real product but a fake PS3. It appears the video is from a foreign country (Japan or China?). I've traveled abroad and seen many bootleg/grey market electronics. This is probably one of those. It looks too amateurish to be a Sony design. Plus the logo looks like the old PS2 logo. Why would Sony go back to old logo. It probably works the same as PS3 but is not made by Sony.

Just my two cents...could be real for all I know

Blurry video and shaky camera is the old standby for the hack hoaxer. I call shenanigans.
I suppose it could be another one of those crappy Popstation things they were selling in China. That's what it looks like.

the video isnt from china or japan. the language sounds like it's from southeast asia.

but i'm 100% sure it's fake. if the slim ps3 even exist; there's no way for it to appear on a retail market in a 3rd world country.

excuse me but... the iPhone even exist in that country. They even sell Wii, DS, XBOX 360 and other consoles like PS2 in the Philippines.
by Shaun822 July 13, 2009 2:05 PM PDT
If it is real this surely isn't the "retail" market it is the black market or grey market. If, big if, it is real its probably a stolen prototype from a plant in that country that some errand boy thought he could seel for big money. I'm leaning toward fake only because Sony has a nasty habit of jumping all over leaks and closing them up and Sony hasn't said much about this yet.
by tt6368 July 13, 2009 2:55 PM PDT
sorry i meant there's no way for it to appear FIRST (and so early) in a 3rd world country.
didnt mean to diss philippines in anyway.

Slim the price, not the console.

Its from the philippines, the question is how a 3rd world country got it first if it is real. I'd say black market.

I second the country of origin as southeast Asia. Could be the Philippines. Hard to tell with the bad audio. Reminds me of Green Hills shopping center.

even though its exactly the same as the "leaked" photos, i think its fake. its too damn ugly to be a sony product. u know sony designs the best products in the world, behind apple. this is some hollow piece of plastic.

I think we can put this behind us that this is in fact a video from the Philippines because 1.) it says so in the description and 2.) I can hear them speaking tagalog (the language of the Philippines). The added text is exactly what the guys are asking/saying.
Like somebody else said, it may be a 3rd party model that functions as a ps3...for awhile. Then it dies, which isnt rare from gray market items. Also, the gray market isnt exactly hard to find in the PI, hell I found a great load of bootleg anime/toys in the mall there by myself when I was 10ish.
Bottom line, I wouldnt expect it to be the legitimate "PS3 Slim."

Okay.. I'm a Filipino, but I live here in US... you know this thing is 50% fake... cuz why would you see a slim PS3 in the Philippines.... not in Japan??? My point is.. is the Philippines the only place to hunt something like that?? lol

Here's a question - WHO CARES? If it doesn't bring any new capabilities, it's just a sizing / pricing thing, hardly worthy of tech-note. BTW, I LOVE my PS3, so NO I am not an XB360 fan-dude.

If it's real Sony needs to do a better job iwth proto-type security. I hope that Sony would rather just look at a reduction in the cost of the current models of the PS3. I already own one so it won't help me out but I like the system and the bigger the install base the better it is for everyone with online gaming and exclusives etc.

if it's real it's a real fake. this is like the iphone clones and other junk they sell all over southeast asia, anybody can have a piece of plastic made up with usb ports and an ethernet port. it could be a 486 with 'PS3' slapped on the front of it. think about it.
