Madden 10 in real time, and it's slow: Scott and Jeff face off

In just a few weeks, John Madden will unleash his annual iteration of a yearly purchase obsession for NFL fans worldwide. For some, this matters little. For die-hard fans like Scott, though, it's an addiction that must be tempered with some sense of restraint. While Jeff enjoys Madden but prefers NHL, Scott has a year-long addiction to endless New York Jets franchise seasons that borders on complete OCD.

In previous years, we had gotten a chance to play Madden a little earlier on. This year, however, our enthusiasm (or at least Scott's) had to wait until EA's Holiday Showcase this week in New York City, where Madden 10 lay waiting, along with a sofa. We had a promise to each other: Jeff would take on Scott for half of Madden, and Scott would try to keep up with Jeff in NHL 10 afterward.

How did it play? This is our story.

Scott:
First of all, we played the 360 version. While the Wii edition sat on demo next to us, and didn't look bad, we had to focus on the true hardcore edition. Our EA representative, who stood behind us, explained that all the player models had been redesigned, as well as adding all-new animations and movements for a different in-game experience. Yeah, yeah, we've heard this every year. It's true, though, that this year's Madden seemed to feature player models that, while improved, almost looked more like Tiger Woods characters somehow. The faces, or the physiques...it's hard to describe, but players were more articulated and yet somehow a tiny bit more "animated." Maybe this was only the effect of a bourbon and Coke.

I played as the New York Jets, my beloved franchise. Jeff took the Giants. Of course, we were in "Giants" stadium.

I noticed that the Jets had a 78 overall rating, which was a bit of an insult. The Giants were, if memory serves, somewhere near 90. I'm not complaining about the Giants, but 78 for the Jets? I promised the EA rep that MY Jets wouldn't be a 78. He snickered and said something uncomplimentary about the Jets, which is par for my life.

Here's the main thing I remember more than anything else: the main, default gameplay is slow. As in, really slow. Compared to the hyper-huddle caffeine-fueled "crack-Madden" sessions I was used to playing, this felt like a forced appreciation of the impact of huddles on a live clock. While it freaked me out to have plays unfold seemingly in slow motion, the Madden rep assured me that the new gameplay better reflected the actual speed of an NFL game, which should, in theory, make for more realistic timing. That was hard to appreciate, but I did notice that controlling the defense, particularly the secondary, was a lot more achievable. Previously, controlling cornerbacks required catlike superpowers unavailable to a mid-thirties man like myself.

The clock also worked off a sped-up 15-minute quarter by default, which makes 2-minute warnings much more realistic than the slightly-halfway-through-the-second-quarter fiasco we've gotten used to over the years. Now, how were the Jets? Better than 78.

I suited up in the kelly-green mid-'80s Jets home uniform before starting, and let me say, that uni just gets better with age. Jeff started by attempting a lateral on his kick return, which I intercepted. Mark Sanchez threw deep for a touchdown two plays later. One 52-yard Dustin Keller TD and two David Harris interceptions later, the Jets were up 21-0 over the stunned Giants at halftime. "Here are your 78 Jets," I said, tossing the controller back. Well, I didn't say that, exactly. I just walked away.

While EA was quick to insist that there will be modes as fast as last year's Madden for the hardcore players who crave it, I had a sort of appreciation for the slowdown. It sabotaged cheap plays, and emphasized stepping up into pockets as opposed to scrambling. And, finally, ball control seemed to matter. Then again, I'm not sure if Madden's new tantra style of patience play will make me tear my hair out at 2 a.m. come September.

Jeff:
I'll be the first to admit I'm only a casual Madden player. That said, I immediately noticed the developer's decision to slow down action in Madden 10. While you'll be able to speed things back up to the way it was in 09, there's a certain realism the new speed is able to capture that previous versions can't touch.

That arcade-esque feeling when running with the ball in years past is essentially gone, leaving you with tougher decisions to make, and more of an incentive to peek downfield at possible holes in the defense. A simple tap of the spin button won't let you get out of certain tackles like you used to be able to.

Presentation-wise, it seems the entire game has been redone, with the intention of giving you a much more television-branded experience. Referees will almost always discuss a goal-line decision before signaling a touchdown or waving off an out-of-bounds catch.

There are too many new animations to even consider discussing them all, but you'll definitely notice gang-tackling right away. It's amazing how pile-ons severely increase the game's realistic appeal. Not everything's new, though. Play selection is back to the three-plays-a-screen format, each one corresponding to a button on your controller.

Scott wiped the floor with me during our game. While I had no problem moving the ball down to his 35-yard-line, I kept throwing interceptions before I was close enough to put some points on the board. Regardless of the score, we both agreed that Madden 10 is an even further step in the direction of the ultra-realistic football experience.

I think I'm going to buy this year's version. I've sat out on the Madden game for quite a long time. Since 03 I believe. NCAA is just more fun to play. Hope EA doesn't disapoint.

One things that's been missing has been the hog-pile fumbling where the refs don't know who has the ball.

I hope to God they got rid of the stupid training modes, i.e. bench press and 40 yrd dash. Bring back the coffin corner kicking and QB drills of old.

nothing is stopping you from playing madden. Unless you're one of those that has a stupid bias. I get a kick out of 2K lovers that brag about how much better 2K is than Madden yet they haven't touched a Madden in 5 years. They're basing their opinion on a 5 year old game as if things haven't changed.
by lahelgren July 13, 2009 10:28 AM PDT
I used to enjoy the variations also (2k and 989/gameday), but all-pro that came out a couple years back was not as good as madden. The best thing about the 2k sports was the pricing, and that competitive edge has been lost (comparing prices of NBA and NHL versions on the newer gaming systems).

uhhh... BCF - Madden hasn't changed much in 5 years dude...
by X_armitage July 31, 2009 5:37 PM PDT
Honestly madden hasn't changed a lot in 5 years. I picked up 09 again after playing the madden 10 demo and is dawned on me just how ugly madden has been since hey became the only game in town. I play madden because I love football but i as good as tiger woods, fight night and other EA sports games look madden seems to have remained the same. Every year I hear the hype and every year since 06. I still miss 2k hears hopeing this years madden makes be forget about it.
by southshallrise July 12, 2009 9:00 AM PDT
madden is still garbage to me...and yes BCF, i am a 2k fan...and yes i HAVE tried maddens since they bought out the liscense...i've played demos. 09 was a little better but still not good enough for what i was used to with 2k. i'll surely try a demo of this years game, but if it's anything like NCAA '10 i'll pass on it once again....i'll just keep playin my all-pro football 2k8.

The 2K series was overrated. There, I said it.

I've been a Madden player for awhile now. That is always the final warning shot for me that football season is about to start (the introduction of the newest season of Madden). I am eargerly anticipating the new graphics (they get more & more realistic every yr) and slowing down game play also should make the game more realistic. I am a Lions fan so with that said if the Jets were a 78 the Lions are probably a 55 (?). I am beating teams like Philly & Arizona on 09 now with the Lions using Drew Stanton at QB and running the ball like 40-50% of the time with K. Smith. Call a play action pass after a steady diet of Smith running up the gut and BAM!! TD LIONS!! If only reality could be as sweet a playtime is at times! LOL

I feel Ya. Im a Niner fan and Lions fan, and i wish my game play resulted in real life. Niners 58 rating and Lions 56, thats what im guessing. even with those i can still kick ass with them. Now in real life they have had some rough seasons. But some times teams just need to go throught the tough years. I just hope not forever.

DONT BUY MADDEN 10 THE GRAPHICS ARE GREAT BUT THE GAME PLAY IS ON PERMINENT LAG
IF YOU LOVE LAG THEN BUY MADDEN 10 IT ALSO HAS NO CONTROL TO DO HOT ROUTES THE GAME SUCKS
by levelut September 19, 2009 1:49 AM PDT
dude Alien, are you stupid? it has the SAME controls to do hot routs than any other madden since 2003...
there's 3 things missing/crappy about this game.
1) QB pocket... it's the same crap it's always been, they talk a lot about how the pocket now forms and you have your linemen push the DEs outside and behind you... it's all bullcrap
2) Superstar mode saw the WORST downgrade in the history of PS games...
3) Franchise mode feels less entertaining, there's no sense of ownership when you pick a team, you don't get the same feeling as before when you said "holy crap this is MY team" like in 2006... now it's just.... CRAP all around
by tundey July 12, 2009 4:32 PM PDT
I was and still am a fan of the 2K sports NFL franchise. I finally got used to Madden and it's not half bad. However, I find it funny that they are still stealing ideas 2K Sports implemented years ago. Madden's Superstar mode is a blatant rip off of 2K sports!

Madden is just proof of how bad monopoly is. The NFL sold out and now we are forced to pay $60 each year for what's basically a roster update.

wow Cnet the Wii version deserves some more credit then that. First whats the real difference between previous versions of Madden on the 360 and PS3? Nothing... Looks slightly better. I thought people wanted fun football games not football sims? The wii version did that stylized look that but them has way more depth when it comes to controls. I will always give props to games on the 360 because of online play but this wii version I think appeals more to me. The person who wants a fun football game but doesn't want to just be watching a football game, but instead wants there to be a surreal feel. I loved blitz the league and blitz the league 2 and never really liked the madden series. The realisitism games are great, and Im going to pick up Fight Night 4 for the 360 but for maddent it will have to be Wii this go around

LOL.

Slow down mode sounds like a good change, perhaps enough to buy again this year. Got off the Madden train for 09 because it was too much like 08, which itself wasn't all that different from 07.

Hey words don't control me, if stephen colbert can make truthiness a real word then realisitism is my gift to the world.

Realisitism - Lifelike visual representation: in a CGI and video game works, Lifelike representation of people and the world in a clearly fake medium. Overly shiny and flashy which denotes that it is clearly not realistic expression of reality.

Can be used in the past present and future tense:)

They seemed to have put out the exact same Madden game for 2008 and 2009 so if you already owed '08 there wasn't a need to purchase '09. With what should have been a 2yr break for those they keep up with reviews, etc, why not give 2010 a chance. Afterall 2009's video game roster has been mediocre at best,

Those 80s/90s Jets unis look off. Seems like they have helmet only. Hope it gets fixed. I was so pumped to read this review - excited about the more realistic pace of gameplay - and especially appreciated a Jets POV! 78! An insult!!!

The last Madden I gave any serious attention to was 2003. I have two questions that I wonder if those of you who are more "into" Madden can answer...

One, does the program have a better play editor? I like to create my own plays, and the best program I ever knew that did that was Sierra's Football Pro '96 (you had complete control over the actions of EACH PLAYER on a play). Last I remember, the play editor in Madden was just terrible.

Two, the last time I messed with a Madden game (2005 version), I couldn't figure out how to get a custom team into the league. In 2003, I just replaced the Raiders (my boys!) with a custom made team, but in 2005 I couldn't figure out how to do it. Can it be done in 2009/2010?

I really wish they hadn't discontinued the PC version or that they'd bring it back.

I just got rid of Madden 2010 PS3 cuz you can't control the players. I try to move my guy one way and he goes where he wants. The play by play stinks. I went out and bought Madden 08 for PS2 because it at least has Madden & Michaels in it and you can control the players. Every year the game gets worse. No more Madden for me.
