Just a couple of weeks after the introduction of the RIM BlackBerry Tour 9630, Verizon Wireless announced Tuesday that the smartphone is now available for preorder online and will be in stores on July 12 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $70 mail-in rebate.

For that price, the BlackBerry Tour offers world roaming capabilities, providing you with voice coverage in 220 countries overseas and e-mail and Internet coverage in 175 countries. Domestically, the smartphone works on Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A network and supports a number of the carrier's services, such as VZ Navigator and V Cast Music.

Other highlights include a full HTML Web browser, built-in GPS, Bluetooth tethering, and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Verizon also revealed that it will release a camera-less model.

Sprint's version of the BlackBerry Tour carries the same $199.99 price tag, but the provider has not released a specific release date.

No 802.11 wi-fi and less than a 5 megapixel camera is a deal breaker for me. Until that happens I won't be recommending any more blackberries for our company.

Never understood why no wi-fi would matter to most people, also simply because it doesn't have a 5 megapixel camera is not a good reason to rule it out. If you knew anything about cameras, you would know that there is more to quality than just the megapixel size. Some 3.2 cameras produce better pictures than 5 or 6 megapixel cameras

I'm sure you can think VZW for the lack of WiFi. If I remember correctly, every other carrier that has the storm (worldwide) has a WiFi capable storm. VZW is the only one that has a WiFi=less storm. And sportsfan is correct, I have an older 4MP camera that takes better picstures than a newer cheap 10MP camera.

I agree with sportsfan206, wi-fi isn't the greatest thing out there and just FYI wi-fi is highly susceptible to hacks, my friend and I were sitting in a wi-fi high spot at the mall and he was able to jump into anyone's phone/notebook he wanted to. Wi-fi isn't secure, Verizon 3G is ! I currently have the Curve and I told myself I wasn't going to buy another blackberry until Verizon gave it GPS and a SIM card so I'm completely satisfied.

Yeah I also don't understand the big deal with no wifi. Surfing the web on free wifi isn't exactly a safe thing to do unless you go through a VPN. Luckily my plan includes unlimited web browsing, so I don't have to find a wifi spot or use a VPN. And the 3.2 camera takes pretty good photos, plus the size isn't too large to email or MMS to someone.

It's easy to spot the ones with a lack of understanding regarding these "Cell Phone Cameras" and camera's in general, Megapixels are touted by manufacters to sell the uninformed, a 2 megapixel camera with a good quality glass lens will take a substantialy better picture than a 6 or 7 megapixel camera with a plastic or cheap glass lens, the problem is that a high quality optical glass lens costs much more than a cheap ground piece of plastic or cheap glass lens, you get what you pay for, as far as WiFi, I cant imagine owning a phone without it for reasons to numerous to list here, that being said, not everyone needs WiFi, if thats the case buy a phone from Verizon or some carrier that doesent offer it or only has it on a few of there phones

You are right. I used to have a smartphone with a 3 megapixel camera and now I have a Bold that has a 2 megapixel camera, and I can honestly say that my Bold takes better pictures. Plus, I believe consumers will be disappointed when they realize that a 2 mp camera's pictures aren't that different from a 3.2 mp camera's pictures. The lack of WiFi for this phone bothers me. I use wifi all the time. The Tour seems to be a standstill device. It's hard to believe that 8 months ago the Bold was released and this device doesn't even match it. Furthermore, when the 5.0 OS update is released, it will be that much more apparent that the Bold is a superior device. WiFi and a stronger processor would make the Tour comparable.

Cameras and Wi-fi -- blah blah blah. The main purpose of the phone is to make calls. What about the fidelity of the sound to/from the recipient? I have had several people call me on Blackberrys and they sound like they are talking into a bucket. I can understand only about half of what one contractor is saying to me. HOW's THE SOUND??

Sound quality is also dependant on the carrier.
by woolecox August 24, 2009 11:19 AM PDT
The sound is the same, it sucks. Still sounds like you are talking in a bucket. Hard for people on the other end to understand. I have less bars at the same places when using my old Treo. Seems to have a harder time with signal strength. Unless you plan to put it on a Blackberry network, forget about networking. It does not support Windows Mobile. Camera works great. Good pics. More resolution than a camera can handle. Email and messaging functions work great. Worthless for a web browser. Screen is too small.

The inability to network on your Windows system and bad sound quality make it a deal breaker for me. Too bad I already bought it. More Chinese crap sold in America.

I purchased the Storm in December when it was released and i couldn't return it to Verizon fast enough. I waited 7 months for the release of the Tour and it was well worth the wait.

The sound quality of the phone is superb! better than any mobile phone i've used, actually at times it's better than my landline. THe speakerphone sound is great, although i still sound like i am on speakerphone when i talk, have yet to find something you don't. The external speakers sound good for what it is. I just use it for an alarm and it does the trick.

I don't know if it's the phone or the bluetooth headset i got, but no one can tell when i am on bluetooth.

This is my first bby or smartphone minus the week i had the storm. so i don't know if the keypad is a standard design or new. THere is a lift on the keys making it very easy to txt and you don't slip often and hit the wrong key like on other smartphones with small qwerty keypads.

This is such a great phone and easy to use, my mom who just learned how to use text msg and is not tech savy at all, went out and bought it the same day i did and loves it as much as i do and figured out how to use basic features.

Since you have to get the datapackage and can connect to internet anyway, i don't get the big deal of wi-fi, i might be a bit ignorant here, but don't you have to be somewhere where wi-fi is broadcasting to connect? and don't you have to pay a fee to connect to wi-fi in most public places?

re the camera, i love the fact you can choose to have it with or without a camera. do to the sentivity of my previous job, i couldn't bring my phone on site to some projects if it had a camera. I did get camera version, took one pic, but i don't buy phones for cameras. I want to access my email, make calls, have my contacts and calender all in one place and perhaps go on the internet. This blackberry does all that with style.

Overall, i am most impressed with sound quality of the calls and how comfortable it is to hold it when on phone and not using headset, which scores a perfect 10. The last time i've been this excited about a new phone was back in 2000 when i got one of the first CDMA (i think) phones that allowed me to use the phone while traveling without roaming charges.

Nice Review.

A 3.2 megapixel camera is more that sufficient for the optics available in a camera phone. Higher resolution simply results in larger files, but no significant difference in image quality. I tried a Palm Pre for about 3 weeks, and while it could perform some pretty cool tricks, it was a lame tool compared to the Blackberry Tour. Other than my short stint with the Pre, this is my first smartphone,. The Tour is a very well thought out device. I was up and running, synched with my outlook, and completely comfortable in a matter of a few hours.

I purchased one of these for work...and returned it within three days. I love the look. Feels comfortable in the hand. Kind of cramped keyboard...making typing difficult at times. But...the major reason for my return...it's SLOW! There is a very noticeable lag between actions or during navigation...which makes navigation difficult. Not sure why this is...but it was so bad that it was a deal killer for me...

Hi,

Next week I will have to choose one of the three following smartphones for corporate business use.

The Storm, Bold, and Tour are my potential candidates I believe. Which one and Why??? I already am shying away from the Storm.

Thanks in advance...

I'm on AT&T but am probably moving over to Verizon the end of this year. I have a Blackberry Curve now. Mine takes good enough photos when I don't have my camera with me. But it is really all about making calls. I'll either get another Curve or go to the Blackberry that has the touch-screen. I really like it. But I just don't see what the big deal is over the Tour. But that's JMHO.

I purchased the Blackberry Tour through Verizon and I love this phone! I purchased for the reason of needing "international" use and was a tad disapointed when I went to Brazil and had no service what so ever! I think they are still working out some glitches but other than that issue, the phone has some great features, including the camera, Slacker Radio, e-mail and phone capabilities. I'm impressed anyways!

3.2 mega pixel is fine as long as the quality of the picture looks good. Some phones have a 5 or 8 mega pixel camera but the pictures don't look good at all.
