Sony PSP Go: First Look video

Sony's got an early demo unit of the PSP Go floating around New York, and we got to spend a little time with it--and Sony PlayStation team rep Al De Leon.

We don't have anything new or earth-shattering to report other than to say we like the smaller design, and the PSP Go does feel pretty good resting in your hands. Oh, and we also have some video shot with a Flip UltraHD (sorry the tight shots aren't sharper but the Flip just isn't good at close-ups).

The PSP Go ($250) is set for release this October and we should have a review up the day it launches. In the meantime, you can read our substantial preview.

As always, comments are welcome.

The following product mentioned is available.

I have the first comment, cool. I can't wait for the new design. Still wish they put another analog stick on the device.

Well, what's the point in making PSP Go? Portability (isn't it portable already??) or to compete succesfully? Sony should've made it touch screen instead of stubbornly sticking to the old conventional control input, and/or add another analog stick. I mean, forget about the argument, "..uh...this is not PSP2..." crap. The PSP is still an impressive hardware, no need for a sequel yet. But it does desperately needs more consumer support. I used to play a lot with my PSP 3000 but now...ah well...it looks like I'll be playing games more on my iPhone 3G S until the next Metal Gear for PSP Go is released.

I completely agree. The absence of weapons of mass destruction in the Go is a huge win.
by szshariff June 24, 2009 3:20 PM PDT
this is just the prototype, so im hoping sony will do something about that, if not a touchscreen they should def have some kind of roller ball, cursor to control when the machine is closed

What people fail to understand is that the PSP Go is not the PSP2 or a replacement for the PSP3000 model, it is meant to be another alternative to people that don't want to buy UMDs and are happy with digital only media. So if they go and change the capabilities of the PSP Go by adding a second analog stick or a touchscreen, then games that come out for the PSP Go that utilizes those features will not work on older models of the PSP. They don't want to create two categories of games, one for the PSP Go and one for all other PSP's. I'm sure that when they do decide to create a PSP2 it will include a second analog stick, as well as many other upgrades to the current system. So we all should accept the PSP Go for what it is; a smaller, lighter, digital only version of the PSP!

@DManDark

We do and since it's not. Meh. I can't even find my PSP. It's absolutly the best and coolest piece of equipment that I don't use. Sony should do something about that. Like a PSP2 that I'd actually use.

If sony wants to capture a smaller market of folks who actually use the PSP and hate UMD then by gosh this will be a raging sucess. It just won't sell.
by iwuzbord June 26, 2009 10:15 AM PDT
i think chaosthoery meant UMD.
hehe :D

but i think a touch screen would be a nice addition, but it would be remotely useless. it would change the psp platform... and it wouldnt be a psp anymore..
by BlitzBoy1120 June 28, 2009 2:41 PM PDT
@ DManDark

O_O thats close to the exact thing I said before......
by Firestorm0013 June 24, 2009 1:07 PM PDT
outside of taking the UMD and adding bluetooth, I don't see how this is an upgrade. A smaller screen, a new memory format, no analog stick and now you have to buy all your games online as supposed to them developing an easier format than UMD, kind of like what nintendo has. The graphics have always been superb

Figures, Sony is always trying to force the consumers to accept their crappy updates that only benefit Sony and none of the consumers.... I guess that's why Nintendo and Iphone are so far ahead.

Most importantly, $250.00 are they $%^&*( Nuts!!!! They most have been crawling under a rock not to notice the damn recession and economic slump of the US.

Isn't Sony taking an approach similar to Apple rather than opposite of Apple? Let's see: 1) Ipod Touch 16Gig retails for about $280. 2) Both will depend on downloadable only content (no ability to resell games). 3) Both have various safety nets in place (firmware version for Sony, ITunes version for Apple) that require users to accept their crappy updates.
by dpg213 June 25, 2009 12:52 AM PDT
Yea price
Hey Al from Sony, many US consumers say $250 is far too much, how would you explain to me that in EU i have to pay 100$ even more (?250 is about $350) for the same device ?????

sony gets a lot of beef from a*sholes that expect everything to be dirt cheap from the proletariat that thinks everyone should be able to afford their products, but they continue to deliver quality which *surprisingly* costs money. its not a product for everyone, its for the financially secure than want quality. this will leave a lot of customers out, and possibly cost sony in the long run, however sony usually manages to deliver extra quality for extra cost, certainly not always the case, but i think the PSP is one of the products that provides the extra quality.

What kind of "quality" is Sony delivering here?

Smaller screen, no UMD, same 4+ year-old tech, proprietary everything... none of that screams quality to me. Neither does the Mylo 2 rip-off design. No, it's says Sony doesn't give a crap about innovating something new. They save money by using old tech, yet charge full price. Sounds like a win for them, but not for us.
by Police_States_of_America June 24, 2009 2:37 PM PDT
the power of a playstation 2 in a handheld device is quality enough methinks. proprietary everything doesnt worry me, DRM does, thats why i wont be purchasing the product
by Renegade Knight June 26, 2009 7:09 AM PDT
I agree. My PSP is great. I just don't use it. Sony should fix that if they want to sell me another one. Capitalism at it's finest if you ask me.
by ayfuller June 24, 2009 2:23 PM PDT
This device is basically not an upgrade at all. Instead, it's just Sony's pathetic attempt at creating a device that supposedly "does it all" but does nothing really well. The PSP is great because it is a great gaming device, not because it can text some useless status update on Facebook. What a joke.

Doesn't the lack of a removable battery bother anyone? I always have two and it solves a whole lot of problems with recharging! The lack of dual analogs is an issue; I just think it's hilarious that everyone ******* about this, and at the same time complains about the lack of a touch scrren... Hello? no one ever complains about the DS's lack of a single joystick!? DS = kids toy. PSP is for the rest of us, and yes, I own both.

Like you I own both. I actually use the DS. We want a 2nd thumbstick because of the frustrations of trying to play a game and move around. The DS doesn't even bother to try those kind of games. A PSP with 2nd thumbstick and touch screen (flip up clamshell like the DS) is a killer device. Especially if sony opens it up for expansion and make the media work (it's a PITA on the PSP now).

So the question is. Does sony want to own the market, or play also ran?

Lack of removable battery=no Pandora's battery

Not good

by petitbrilliance July 4, 2009 5:04 PM PDT
The DSi is an even more awful upgarde to the DS than the Go is to the PSP.
by madhudvs June 24, 2009 7:56 PM PDT
the new desing sucks ......the ergonmics of the device seem to be the problem....!
and smaller screen is a big set back for me....!
and i was wishing for a single piece device...(hate slides or flips)....
and the inside of the pspgo seems to be the same as the old ones...so cant expect any better graphics..!

Homebrew for the win! Until then I will not buy this even though I'm one of those dork that preorder the original $299.99 PSP very early. Sorry Sony, no touch screen really kill the sliding design. Second nub doesn't work for me so it's passable.

Looks better on camera. Wished they had added a dual analog stick like most people. I still have my PSP 1000 unit from the original launch, and honestly, the lack of good FPS games on the platform have kept me away from my PSP for a couple of years now. Why would I pay $50-$60 for a somewhat mediocre PSP game when I can either download 10 more games for my iPhone or one single game for my Xbox? That's just my preference. Just aren't enough games out there to keep me attracted to the PSP, let alone a new upgrade. I'm glad to see Sony experimenting with its design, but they still have some way to go with this.

So, I will wait for either the Zune HD in hopes of seeing Xbox Live Arcade support or until next year to pick up a new handheld. With Golden Sun returning to the scene on the DS, I plan to pick up a new unit regardless if they release a new one or not. The DSi is nice; just the lack of a GBA slot bothers me, but GS was the best mobile game I ever played. I'd like to see some similar RPGs make their way to the PSP as well. We'll see.

I understand that the point of the PSP GO is not to encourage people to upgrade but to draw in a new fanbase. Lets say that a perspective buyer had a negative experience or heard of a negative experience with apple from years ago, remember first impressions still mean a lot to people. Sony could be that alternative. Also PS2 quality games beat the I-Touch games by a longshot.

There is no new fanbase to be had with this. This ain't a Wii and nothing about it would bring in the Wii types.

Sony PsP Go=Cell phone w/slide screen-phoneing feature
Im not really impressed witht the design, or features. UMD really fell under the bus. Typical Sony format, create something interesting and abandon it.
Them downloadable games best be dirt cheap, Nothing would suck more than downloading a 50.00 game to find out it blows the hind leg and not be able to sell/trade it.
OMG Slam in another analog stick at the least

Sorry no such saying........

I like Sony but what are they thinking? Offering no real upgrade (arguably a downgrade) this unit costs too much especially with its cheaper UMD brother in the market. You think they would learn from there struggles with the PS3. Guess not.

Well the thing that has me baffled is backwards compatibility. Nothing legitimizes a product more than being able to use what you already have. No existing psp owners will want to upgrade if it means not being able to use the UMD that you already own. Also its weird that they would go as far as reducing the size of the screen and removing the analogs, do any games have a need this? would that mean a small update? Does that mean they will stop making the og?
BTW not a fan, their car audio products left a bad taste in my mouth, so did the upside downstation2.

Hey, for me no touch screen is good, i'd rather have regular buttons then buttons on the screen! They get in the way. Finger touch screens get smudged fast and my stialis for my phone is always getting lost. No touch screen is good in my book, my itouch just pisses me off

All it needs now is a phone... oh wait... bluetooth+skype+wifi+jawbone=replacement for iPhone without a contract.

Sad part is I dont really spend time anywhere that I wouldn't have a wifi signal to tx/rx phone calls. IMHO id much rather play FFVII on here than with an i-phone touch version of it. Tactile controls are a must for good gaming.

I own a PSP 1000 and realy like it. I've always been a Sony gamer. The compatibility with the PS3 is amazing. The PSP series in my opinion is as close as you can get to console gaming on the go. The features and additional functions of the PSP are superior to anything on the market today. I realize my 1000 will die eventually and I will need to replace it. I'm sure I'm not alone here. The question is, what do I replace it with? A PSP 3000 or a PSP Go? The only thing I'm waiting to hear to make my decision is more details on this goodwill program. If I can't switch over at least 90% of my UMD's to digital then there is no question. I'll be going with the 3000. I'll bet I'm not alone here either. I hope Sony really thinks this through. I'd even be happy with mailing them my UMD's and a hand full of memory sticks if they'd do a complete digital conversion for free.

Im like 100% in the same boat. My psp-1000 is great, I love it. But it is getting old, plenty of scratches and its actually has a small crack in it. The big question is psp Go or psp-3000 cause I want a new one but if Sony doesn't come up with a good will program for my great bundle of UMDs then I'll be walking out the store with a new psp-3000.

But to be honest coming out with the psp Go the way it is now was a mistake for Sony. Yes, I understand they are reaching a new group of consumers who prefer everything digital and do not have a psp to begin with, into the market, but that group of consumers is not big enough to really worth this launch for it. Apple is already to far ahead in this category for Sony to make much profit off this.

What they should've done was went ahead and worked on the PSP2, perhaps even just having the psp Go with the main features wanted, (another dual analog, better graphics, etc.) and this way they would have grabbed a bigger range of consumers, those new to the hand held and want digital and those already psp owners to upgrade, giving Sony way more profit. I mean I'll admit I'm a Sony fanboy but this is not a smart move.
by dj_sik June 25, 2009 5:06 PM PDT
So this psp will pretty much be crap!!! Cant share games??? Design is stupid??? Same graphics??? Looks uncomfortable to hold??? The price is ridiculous???!!!! Dont buy it people maybe well force them to develop a new one worth buying. Trust me im a sony guy all the way, but this is crap...
