Xbox 360 exclusive gaming rundown

by Jeff Bakalar

One of the biggest decisions when choosing a video game system has to be the exclusive games. Console manufacturers go to enormous lengths to tie up deals with developers and their publishers in order to claim one console's superiority over another.

Numerous titles and franchises are only available on Xbox 360 including Gears of War, Halo, and Forza MotorSport.

Now that E3 2009 has come and gone, let's take a look at some more 360-only titles that are scheduled for release in the coming months.

Stay tuned for our PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii exclusives slideshows, both coming soon!

Before covering games and gear for CNET Reviews, Jeff Bakalar dabbled in film and video production. An avid writer, reader, and gamer, Jeff is also an obsessive New Jersey Devils hockey fan. Catch him live every day as the co-host of CNET's infamous podcast, The 404.

Click on "view the full gallery". Can't believe they counted the GTA ****** Tony DLC as an exclusive, who would buy a console for DLC?

Ha! "The title of the game in your comment has been censored for discriminatory language."
by tcr071 June 19, 2009 3:16 PM PDT
Well if you read any of the reviews for the GTA4 DLC you would have seen that each DLC featured 15+ hours of gameplay which is just as much if not more than most full games.

Where's the PS3 Exclusives list? Or is it too large to fit into an article?

Not too large. Just underwhelming enough that they decided to leave it for their second or third article. Whoopee we get our 14,000th Final Fantasy game...

@tcr071
Final Fantasy?? haha who cares anymore(Jk, I'm sure its still fun after 14 games)...I'll be honest though, there is no exlcusive line that is worse than the 360's. Only game I would be interested in is Left 4 Dead 2, which will just be on PC anyway(Much better choice for that game anyway). There definitely isn't any game that gives me an incentive to buy a new one(mine RROD twice and then I threw it), which ruins the point right?

So they count exclusives as games that are on both PC and Xbox? Hmmmm....

It only counts on consoles. The PC gaming market is not in direct competition with Consoles. Many exclusive console games are also released on PC. It's always been like this, what rock have you been living under?
by noahjwhite June 19, 2009 11:27 AM PDT
The only ones that matter to me right now:

Xbox: Halo, Gears of War, Fable 2, Forza,
PS3: Resistance, Infamous, KillZone
Wii: wii Sports

Yes... I own all three systems. I have 2 xbox 360's. And I use the 360 the most for games by a long shot (outside of the pc). I use the PS3 for blue ray. I use the the wii... well.. pretty much never. Unless my little cousins come over.

I had all 3. One of them red ringed me.
by xmaster_dosx September 21, 2009 12:05 PM PDT
@ renegade knight.
when one of them red rings you you put it in a box ship it some where and get it back good as new. ive done this more than once.
by chrkeller June 19, 2009 11:51 AM PDT
I have all three systems, the 360 has a great lineup, though the ps3 is closing the gap and quickly. As for exclusives, God of War III is the most prominent for me.

I agree. I have an XBOX 360 and a PS3, and this is the first year since the PS3 launch that I've been more excited about the PS3 exclusives than the 360. Of course the year is only half over and that could change. Also agree that GOW 3 is the exclusive that I'm most looking forward to in the next year.

For the longest time I never thought any console would dethrone my mighty 360 as king of consoles in my home. A funny thing happened though, I bought a Wii and a PS3 and I've found myself buying the many exclusives for those systems. Throw in the fact that Halo 3 and the GOW franchise aren't the cornerstones of my 360 collection (The online play in both has the potential to make them great, but not until you can play with people who don't glitch or quit when the going gets tough!) On topic though, the 360 does have many great exclusives that are definately worth checking out ;)

PS3 Exclusives: Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 1 2, Killzone 2, Singstar, Uncharted 1 2, God of War 3, SOCOM, MAG, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy XIV, Infamous, White Knight Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Series, Gran Turismo

Xbox Exclusives: Ninja Gaiden Series, Too Human, Fable Series, Halo Series, Left for Dead, Gears of War Series, Forza, Kingdom of Fire, Gauntlet series.

I think PS3 wins in exclusives I know there's more in the Xbox world. Regardless, PC dominates consoles! =P

I notice you group X360 games in series (Ninja Gaiden Series, Halo Series, Gears of Wars series), but in the PS3 you mention them as a different game. So, let's do the same with the PS3 games.
Metal Gear series, Resistance series, Killzone series, Uncharted series, GoW series, Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Heart series, Gran Turismo series. Now the PS3 list is shorter. Plus you failed to mention some X360 exclusives, like Project Gotham series, Splinter Cell series, Sainrs Row Series, Mass Effect series, Crackdown series.

my two cents...
by TyDiz June 20, 2009 12:00 AM PDT
@dvelez
You didn't make his list any shorter(Final Fantasy series isn't an exclusive just those 2 games) ...plus GOW was the only one in the Xbox list with 2 games on the system...and with you're added games and Final Fantasy counting as 1, you're list is stilllll shorter.

So you're two cents was really worth...umm nothing.

For the Xbox, you forgot Dead Rising, Fear Files, and Mass Effect, I didn't include some of the lesser games, like Absolution2009 did to make the system seem better than it is, plus the DLC for GTA sold more than most of those games on the PS3 sold in the stores.

Of course the Xbox gets exclusives that the PS3 has to wait at least 6 months to get, like Lost Planet(which Lost Planet 2 is announced for Xbox but not PS3), Bioshock, Last Remnant, reports that DLC for Modern Warfare 2 will be timed exclusive, and GTA Lost and Damned.
by Cralfinsam July 19, 2009 10:41 PM PDT
Wow, talk about listing every single PS3 exclusive you can think of, including the extremely crappy ones, and only listing a fraction of the 360s exclusives.

Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Lair and SOCOM were all received very poorly, so you can throw those out of the PS3 list right from the start. The same for Gauntlet and Too Human on the 360.

With those games removed, the majority of PS3 exclusives in your list have not even been released yet, so there is no way to know how they will turn out. What we can do is look at the exclusives already released on each console to judge the lineups.

Let us look at exclusive games on each console that have scored an average of 90 or higher on MetaCritic. To hold a score like that, a game would have to be outstanding and receive praise from most critics.

To make this list, a game would have to score 90 or higher and not appear on the opposing console.

360 AAA Exclusives (10)

Gears of War (94)
Halo 3 (94)
Braid (93)
Gears of War 2 (93)
Mass Effect (91)
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (90)
Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned (90)
Portal: Still Alive (90)
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (90)
Forza Motorsport 2 (90)

PS3 AAA Exclusives (4)

LittleBigPlanet (95)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (94)
Killzone 2 (91)
MLB 09: The Show (90)

It is very clear which of the above lists is larger.

Now, some will argue that the 360 came out a year before the PS3, as if that explains why the 360 has 2.5 times as many AAA exclusives as the PS3. Well, if we remove the 2 360 games that came out before the PS3 launched (Gears of War and GRAW), the 360 still has 8 AAA exclusives, twice as many as the PS3 had in that same exact timeframe. As you can see, no matter what way you twist the facts, the 360 still comes out on top.

As far as future lineups go, we can only assume which games will live up to their hype and score AAA. Here are some exclusive games from each console that are likely to receive uinversal acclaim.

Xbox 360 (10)

Alan Wake
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Halo 3: ODST
Forza Motorsport 3
Crackdown 2
Grand Theft Auto IV: TBoGT (have to abbreviate it so it does not get censored)
Halo: Reach
Gears of War 3
Mass Effect 2
Left 4 Dead 2

PlayStation 3 (10)

Heavy Rain
MAG
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
God of War III
Final Fantasy XIII Versus
Final Fantasy XIV
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Gran Turismo 5
Agent
LittleBigPlanet 2

To me, the consoles look pretty evenly matched for the future.

Sorry but the PS3 list is FAR superior. The Xbox list is so desperate for titles it has to include DLC. The PS3 list is even missing some heavy hiitters to, so CNET can try and even up the balance.

Are you kidding? How long did it take 2k to release Bioshock for the PS3? A year later? And I remember clearly the fervor that was accompanied with it: PS3 owners were clammoring for something to play because the majority of the big title [READ:] exclusives were released during the period from the summer to October '08.

Even if you were to discount the RROD's at 20% of all Xbox 360 consoles sold, the Xbox 360 has still outsold the PS3 by at least ~1,000,000 units. If we count software, attachment rates, absolute exclusives, and average MetaCritic scores for all games, the Xbox 360 has outperformed the PS3 in a majority of sectors.

It is my personal belief that if you want to play games, pick up a 360. If you like playing with others competitively over the internet, the 360 is what you want (XBL brats discluded). If you're looking for more casual gameplay (com'n, the PS3 isn't known for its online matchmaking capabilities) and an awesome home theatre experience, the PS3 is for you.

I would argue that the current PS3 lineup is more varied in terms of gameplay; there are different types of titles, all relatively excellent. Most of the 360 titles are FPS's (or some variation on shooting). As an owner of a 360 for 3 years (and I have never RROD'ed), I am pleased, but I am getting bored with shooters, nowadays. I cannot wait for a solid RPG title (like ME2) to come out.
