Palm responds to Apple's warning

On Tuesday, Apple issued a warning that it does not support iTunes synchronization with "non-Apple digital media players" and that future versions of the software may put an end to any such capability. While Apple didn't point any fingers, it's hard to believe the warning wasn't directed right at the Palm Pre, which shows up as an iPod when connected to iTunes and allows you to sync non-DRM media to the smartphone.
Palm isn't taking it lying down and has responded to Apple's threats. Speaking to John Paczkowski of the Wall Street Journal, Palm spokesperson Lynn Fox said:
Palm's media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.
Also, as MyPre.com points out, Apple would have to specifically block the Pre since it shows up as an iPod and any casual changes to iTunes could affect legacy iPod support. Either way, things are getting pretty sticky. Apple, your move.

Steve Jobs just keep sticking it to everyone that uses his products (like new ipods every 6 months, new IPHONES
at about the same time frame, music that you downloaded and lost due to a hard drive crash that can no longer be replaced because their customer service people say those songs are no longer available, even though you are staring at it in the iTunes store) I'd rather get my music from a company that supports it's product 200% like amazon.
The best way to get the best of Mr.Jobs and his little seedlings is just have 5 friends open one account, you can then share the music between the 5 of you,yes there are many ways around the Mr.Jobs rules as far as music is concerned. NON ApPLE users just love stick it to everything Apple.......
I once hooked up an older Motorola cell phone to my itunes account and Apple's software
saw that as an iPod. Apple and iTunes are just two of the companies I'd love to see buried by this
economy nothing would be a better going away present for Mr.robsus...errrr I mean Mr.Jobsus.
it'll remain locked and closed always following in Apple's footsteps !
"it'll remain locked and closed always following in Apple's footsteps ! "
I don't believe Microsoft has gone out of their way to intentionally disable another company's device as Apple has implied threats to do so here.
I certainly hope they do not follow Apple's lead in that area.
If I rip a CD to my iTunes, why should Apple tell me I can't put that file on whatever device I want.
iTunes certainly used to support other devices but the APIs to do so, which Palm is NOT using, are old and also only support some pretty ancient hardware. Current devices that sync with iTunes do so using the "iTunes Library.xml" file and the files on your file system, which is what Palm ought to be doing themselves if they want to go down the route of unsanctioned support.
=^ )
@Slick1of2
Palm should really have stricter controls on who their daughter dates.
Slick you be da man!!!!!!!
Palm is not doing well by trying to use unpublished APIs without some agreement.

"I think the problem here is that Palm was advertising that the Pre syncs with itunes, and Apple is just clarifying that they have nothing to do with this ability and that they are not responsible if it ever stops working or if bugs appear in the future."
BTW have you looked at the Zune same DRM same Syncing ,basically the same thing
it's the same with Nokia phones and othercompanies as well
Imagine how Nokia would feel if some one started using their Pc suite software for their own phones ?
I haven't tried it with iTunes because I actively dislike Apple's DRM stance.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you're a fan of DRM then? You actively dislike the stance of the company that called for the banishment of DRM. Quoting Steve Jobs himself:
"Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat. If the big four music companies would license Apple their music without the requirement that it be protected with a DRM, we would switch to selling only DRM-free music on our iTunes store. Every iPod ever made will play this DRM-free music."

Argue from knowledge, argue from hatred if you must, but don't argue from ignorance.
but I dont think Apple can really stop the itunes integration , cause it will look bad on Apple's part !
I use J. River Media Center to manage my media and sync with my devices, and I was able to set it up to sync with my Pre without much difficulty. Setup was a manual process, but now syncing is automated, and that's a small price to pay to use my applications with my devices and my music as I see fit.
Once again, I have to say that Palm is simply foolish to allow any strategic aspect of the Pre user experience to be tied to anyone else except Palm.
Also I wonder if you can use programs like Media Monkey with the Pre. I actually prefer Media Monkey and I use it with my Ipod instead of itunes...I don't even have itunes on my computer.
I guess Palm needed to create another reason to buy the Pre. It's kind of sad that iTunes functionality is the best they could come up with.
There will probably be a minor update to the iTunes software later this year to disable syncing with the Pre. That's my two cents on the matter.
all apple is doing is trying to play dirty again palm. first the threatening to sue them over multitouch, now this. i wonder whats next.
True BUT Microsoft doesn't make money off of people using exchange except for the money that is paid to them for the license. People using the Pre would buy music, shows, books and such from the itunes store so it would be only a win for them to let the Pre use itunes. Now Palm should just point people toward other programs like Media Monkey and Songbird, sure they won't be able to buy music and such but at least they can use them to sync with the Pre.
What is the point of this? Well, it's obvious that Apple feels threatened by what the Palm Pre could mean to their market as a competitor to their precious iPhone. Compatibility issues with Macs is as old as time itself and we can't help but to realize that it is done with full intention. Apple user are blinded by their shiny new toy and can't see how this company is exploiting every dollar that they have. Who cares if the Pre can sync with iTunes?
Apple users need to stop defending a company that is essentially stealing money from them in any way that they can and stand up for their user-base. Until that happens, Apple will continue the arrogant, selfish path that they are on.
