Samsung announces Jet smartphone with 800MHz processor

No U.S. carrier has been announced for the Jet.

At an event in Manhattan Monday, Samsung unveiled its new Jet smartphone, which features a fast 800MHz processor and Samsung's proprietary OS that includes its Dolphin Web browser. Alas, the Jet won't be flying into the U.S. anytime soon, though its designation as a UTMS phone leaves AT&T as its most probable destination if it does hit these shores. All that said, it is available for the rest of the world later this year.

Unlike the Omnia 2, which was also announced at the event, Samsung did have the Jet on hand for reporters to play with. Several remarked that the touch screen seemed quite responsive despite being resisitive. But there was some disappointment that the phone didn't seem even zippier with that 800MHz processor (until now, smartphone processors have tended to top out at 600MHz). However, Samsung reps said the software wasn't final and was still being tweaked. (It was also impossible to test the Dolphin browser because there was no network connection).

All in all, the look and feel of the Jet was appealing. It's smaller than the iPhone and is more on par with the size of the Palm Pre. However, we're just not sure how appealing a proprietary OS is at this point when you have an open OS like Android sitting out there.

Here are the Jet's specs:

  • Network: EDGE/GPRS Class 12 (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz); HSDPA 3.6Mbps (900, 2100MHz)

  • Share Pix & Mobile Widget
  • A-GPS, on-board navigation (3D map)

800MHz processor means very little, anyone know what kind it is? An 800MHz cortex would be impressive, faster than the Pre and Iphone 3Gs

The Samsung Instinct is terrible! No applications, very buggy and no software updates ever available. It's a joke to do smartphones with proprietary operating systems at this point. There should only be android and I-Phone OS, maybe Palm.

You forgot Windows Mobile. It has more applications and more software updates than any other smartphone.

@ace10134
it doesn't run WinMo ?
it runs some stupid Samsung proprietary symbian O.S port
which doesn't even have a name ! Lol

@seven7dust

ace meant wdmiller forgot to mention Windows Mobile when he was listing useful OS' for mobiles. People don't even read before they comment these days-.-?

and @wdmiller

of course i agree that the os of jet is pretty crappy (i own this and i hate the os). but it's just a very basic economic reason why we should let them keep doing this. MS was a monopoly in OS producing industry. not 100% but had very large share. that is why apple is doing so well now. MS didn't have any proper competitor so it's product quality fell due to lack of incentives and this resulted in vista 'crisis.' if those producers mentioned above win over all the other producers with small shares, very likely that the samething with vista will happen. price high, quality not that impressive

What a surprise. Another "smartphone" that looks exactly like the iPhone. I wonder what it must be like to be an engineer who is told to copy someone else's product but try not to make it look like a copy. Talk about soul crushing. How sad that nobody other than Apple can innovate.

Very sad indeed.

Right - 'cause Apple didn't completely rip off the LG Prada or the HTC touch, both of which were announced before the iPhone. And don't even start with how much better the OS is, considering it can't even multi-task.

And Apple didn't rip off the design for their iPod from the Rio PMP300.

Why don't the Apple fans "innovate" some insults that actually come from original thinking rather than repeating the same one I've seen on every forum that has to do with tech since 1995?
by BenFlavoredCandy June 16, 2009 10:49 AM PDT
Do you really think that Apple hadn't already designed the iPhone when the Prada or Touch were announced? Or maybe they redesigned their phone in those couple months between... Maybe people are using this design because it's functional? Because Traco and Anderson both make windows doesn't mean one stole the other's design.
by troyrig June 16, 2009 8:31 PM PDT
@BenFlavoredCandy-

You're absolutely right - all three were probably being developed simultaneously. And I do like Apple products, have a MacBook Pro myself. I just hate how many Apple fans accuse everything of being an Apple copycat. Be original and knock its features without comparing it to Apple this or Apple that.

i never get the people saying 'another copy of iPhone.' That full touch screen has been adapted by many other producers way before iTouch or iPhone. in what sense do u say it is a copy? front part is mainly screen??? there are harldy no buttons? anyway apple is not the first one to make stuff. i wasn't following when iPohne came out so i will go with iTouch example. common mistake: people think iTouch was the very first multimedia player with full touch screen. wrong. i don't know if there were other models from other companies, but samsung had one before iTouch. and people usually compare Apple with MS or Samsung with their products. that is really not fair. Apple is actively engaged in both softeware part and hardware part. on the other hand, MS mainly in software, Samsung more for hardware. Samsung is one of the flash memory suppliers for apple products. Apple is not doing all the work. they are all working together. Apple's success against toher competitors comes from its brilliant marketising skills not because they create new stuff (maybe sometimes that is true but not usually).
by hhj2612 June 16, 2009 8:49 AM PDT
Um... Well all the Samsung phones have the same unique design. And you cant say samsung copied apple. Almost all smartphones have similiar designs. Iphone.. I really hate it. I dont know why,, But I love My Omnia and I do know why.. And also "apple innovate??" Bull crap.. My mac book's monitor was broken after a month. I called apple care they said to buy a new one...

I was wondering if the UK model have Wi-Fi? The http://jet.samsungmobile.com/ website doesn?t state anything about this model having it and I emailed Samsung customer services to ask them and I got the reply ?In response to your email regarding the wi-fi query. We can advise that this handset does not have the option for wi-fi.? A lot of sites do state that the phone carries Wi-Fi, but none of them are official Samsung sites so I am led to believe different things. Share your view at http://www.SamsungJetForum.com a community for the future jet users when it's released.
