In advance of E3 next week, rumors continue to circulate around the possibility of a new PSP and a new, slimmer PS3. Here are the latest:

  • Ars Technica is reporting that the next-gen, UMD-free PSP Go! is "indeed real," according to a "trusty inside source" and should be announced at E3.
  • The same Sony "mole" claims that the new PSP will be "lighter than its UMD-sporting predecessor, along with lower power consumption and possibly a lower price."
  • The new PSP will be sold alongside the older version of the PSP (PSP-3000), according to the Ars report.
  • The alleged source says, "A good number of titles will be released with both retail releases and digital downloads, with some games like Unbound Saga forgoing a retail release altogether."
  • As for the slimmed-down PS3, it, too, is real, according to the mole--but Sony won't begin selling the new PS3 until stock dwindles on the PS3 currently on store shelves. The source is targeting August or September for possible launch dates.
  • There's no word on if Sony plans to strip any features out of the alleged PS3 Slim or if it will cost less than the current model.
  • The mole claims that Sony isn't expected to announce a price cut on the current PS3 to clear inventory, "but the possibility is certainly there." (This obviously has the biggest no-duh quotient of any of the statements.)
That's it. Nothing terribly exciting or new here, but it does make sense that Sony would wait to announce a new PS3 until it can clear inventory. Obviously, with all these rumors out there, it's going to be harder to move units without some sort of price drop.

As always, feel free to comment and make your own predictions.

If a slimmed down PS3 comes with a slimmed down pricetag, fine. Otherwise, Sony is wasting its time and efforts on a feature very few people have been asking for. I can't help but wonder what ISN'T inside the slim PS3.

I guess the new PSP Go! Will be the version for people who don't like packaged media. UMD may not be popular, but resale value is important to many gamers. The success of the PSP Go! will depend upon its digital library of games and we haven't seen much of that yet. I'll reserve judgement until I see what the thing looks like. Honk if you want dual analog sticks!

I sort of agree here... I'm not sure what the 'slimmed down' point would be if they haven't condensed components enough to do a price drop. It isn't like the current PS3 is unstylish or not fitting into most people's entertainment systems.

That said, while I'd also love to see a price drop (I might pick up another one to serve out games and such)... I think the emphasis on it is overblown. The current PS3 is quite competitive when you look at what you're getting and its overall value. It would be like if a Chevy Cobalt was $15000, but you could pick up a BMW 3 series for $20000. Sure the BMW costs more... but look at how much more you're getting for it.

@SteveW928 - I agree that you get a lot of value for your gaming dollar. It actually saves money and space if you are interested in Blu-ray. It was the best Blu-ray player available when it launched and it's stayed relevant today.

I think Nintendo dodged a bullet this generation. They have a younger fanbase and their parents DON'T want their kids playing online. That's why Nintendo's online gaming is so crap. And since the Wii is so last-gen, they'll be coming out with a new console well before Sony does. We'll see if they spend their Wii $$$ on better tech next-gen, but my guess is they won't bother. It's more profitable to pander to the lowest common denominator.
by SteveW928 May 29, 2009 9:31 AM PDT
@ NervClaX -
I think the Wii has its place, it just isn't really a competitor with the Xbox or PS3. It is, as you say, a last-gen system with a very innovative UI. I can related to the parents you speak of.... the Xbox and PS3 have largely become fairly adult gaming systems. The games aren't really aimed at kids (well, marketed to them, but not really for them). With a young child who will one day want to play... I would like to see both have more titles for kids (and see game devs stop throwing in graphic violence and sex just to get the rating they know will attract the kiddies who think such things are cool). So, I don't really even talk about the Wii when comparing Xbox to PS3. Again... not to put it down... it is a neat system and concept, and it selling like hot-cakes, but just not in the same league.

I don't really understand how people don't "get" why they would release a smaller PS3. First of all it's in their history to do so with the PS One and the slim PS2. Now whhhyy oh whyy won't they just make it cheaper? Well if they can make it smaller and lets say 30 bucks cheaper, if that, and also they can produce for either less by consolidating chips or simply keeping their costs the same then SOME people who previously wanted a PS3 feel like THIS model is the one to buy or other people who want the new one because they care about looks will sell their previous one and upgrade. Sony is a Company. You aren't "people" or "customers" you're income. Go into a decent Business school and don't ask the professors who teach bull crap business ethics because it's in the text books ask the business honors kids what they think. They're brutal even as freshmen. What do you want ? MONEY
by Fil0403 May 31, 2009 1:47 AM PDT
I agree the thing Sony be pushing for more than anything else is a price cut (its biggest flaw being its price IMO) - regardless of how much value you get for the money (it's still an expensive console, at least compared to the competitors and especially the Xbox 360, which, apart from the BluRay, is not much technologically inferior).

I disagree with the PSP Go!: it will be the versions for everyone that craves a PSP, as soon as the firmware gets cracked and you can play pirated games, dot.

Why don't you just post a link to the Ars Technica article and be done with it? Why copy paste their work here? I was hoping for some unique insight on this, oh well. :)

If Sony really wanted to get people to buy the PS3 they would make it backwards compatible so it would play all of those PS2 and PS1 games. Don't they pay attention to the sales figures that show the PS2 OUTSELLING the PS3? A price cut would be much appreciated also.
As for the PSP Go, I am already planning to buy mine when it comes out. I still have my original PSP that I bought the first weekend it was available and love it. I use it just as much for media (movies, TV shows, music videos, etc.) that I dowload onto the memory stick as much as I do for games. I do wonder if they will provide previous PSP owners a way to move our games over to the new system without having to re-purchase everything as a download. Probably not, which will give Sony another black eye from a customer appreciation standpoint.

I don't know.... I spent an extra $100 to get the PS2 compatibility back when I bought mine in Dec of '07. I kept most of my PS2 titles when I then sold my PS2. Since, I've only used my PS2 titles like maybe 3 or 4 times... and have traded in most of them. I might end up getting rid of the rest, as I just never use them any longer. I've replaced just about everything with a PS3 title of the same genre... and having the on-line gaming experience of most of them make it much more fun. I think Sony probably did the research and realized that while this might be an advertising stat, that in reality, most people don't use it. (That said... I'm not sure why they didn't keep software emulation... doesn't seem like that would cost extra $ for them).

A price drop would be great.... but I think the PS3 is pretty competitively priced at the moment. I'm not sure stripping it down (to make it more like Xbox) would necessarily be a good idea. It make a lower entry point... but I think people get sick of getting taken on all the 'additions' they charge way to much for. If you make an Xbox similar to a PS3, it actually costs more (and still isn't equivalent in gaming power).
by make_or_break May 28, 2009 2:03 PM PDT
Like SteveW928, I used to think that backwards compatibility of games was a big deal as well. When I took the plunge I made sure I bought the MGS-packaged 80GB PS3, supposedly the last unit available with some level of PS2-game compatibility. But as it turns out for both my PS3 and 360 I rarely have ever bothered with it. I suppose it's nice to know that it's there if I want it, but given the HD nature of PS3 games going back in time to my PS2 titles doesn't seem all that appealing as it once did. And having to hook up different cabling and do system updates to get PS2 sound to work right just doesn't seem worth it.
by NervClaX May 28, 2009 2:14 PM PDT
Backwards compatibility wasn't an issue when Microsoft launched the XBox 360. In fact, BC has been a non-issue for almost every previous console launch with the exception of the PS3. People expected it of the PS3 because PSOne games worked on the PS2. I is an overrated technology that rarely gets used. I understand that it smoothes the transition from console to console, but once you have a nice library of new titles going, do you go back? Most of the nostalgia for older games can be satisfied by firing up an old console or downloading something for the Virtual Console. BC is an expensive feature for older fans that gets subsidized by younger consumers who care little if at all about "the classics."

Also, reintroducing BC after having removed it from the vast majority of PS3s would be a huge insult to consumers. Just pick up a PS2. It's only $99 for chrisakes!
by Gary_Frederick May 29, 2009 3:26 AM PDT
My family got a backward compatible PS3 and are glad.

Do we play a lot of PS(1-2) games - no.
Can we - YES.

And a PS2 game looks better on a PS3.

I want a keyboard on the PSP - have since I got one.
by chrkeller May 29, 2009 5:13 AM PDT
Personally I love BC. I got the original 60 GB ps3 that has hardware based BC. I play quite a few psx and ps2 games on my ps3. I also play quite a few xbox games on my xbox 360. BC is nice, I don't want 10 systems in my theater, but still want to play old games.
by mogley2005 May 28, 2009 1:31 PM PDT
If they release a new PSP it really should have a second analog stick, that was my biggest complaint with the system and ultimately why I chose not to buy it. That being said, if they don't have a second analog stick, I think it will dramatically affect gameplay.

It's pointless for Sony to release a "new" PSP if they're not going to incorporate a 2nd analog stick.

I have a PSP and it's just collecting dust. I also am not willing to spend $40/game.

If sony should release a new PSP, it should have a 2nd analog stick, and have the ability to buy games from the Sony store (save it in the memory card) and for around $20 per title. A store like itunes would rock.

As for the PS3, making one that's "slimmer" but sells for the same price would not get me to buy one.

The only way I'll buy a PS3 is if Sony throws in 2 controllers, hdmi cable and a game (Killzone 2) for $300. Otherwise, I'll continue to play with my 360 and my PC.

As of now, to get a PS3:
PS3 = $400
Game = $60
hdmi = $20
---------------
Total $480 before tax.

No thanks Sony.

Don't forget $25 for the Blu-ray remote control. (Which is not even universal, btw).

x-box 360:

1.) Console w/hard drive (60gb): $365 (amazon.com)

2.) Wirless adaptor: $100

3.) HDMI: $20

4.) X-Box Live: $50 A YEAR

------------

Total before tax: $535

Umm, what's your point here douggdangger? Your asking price for a 2 controllered game included hdmi included PS3 sonds ludicrous.
by lil-yankee May 29, 2009 12:28 PM PDT
@douggdangger

Its fine for you to stick with your xbox. the fact of the matter as (Kendokill ) so very well states is the following.
American people, specially old people try to be savvy buyers and go for the lowest upfront price they think its going to get them to a level ie. want an iphone? get a samsung F480, want a bravia? get a nirvania etc. A lot of will be buyers will also go to a walmart where the prices are a few pennies lower, ditch their local store and drive miles away to the nearest (relativelively speaking) walmart wasting galons of gasoline to get there and (in their mind) think they got the best deal.
the fact is cookies (walmart)[.89](nearby store)[1.09] transportation (walmart)[5.39](nearby store)[0.00]
same goes for the ps3-360 (and note i have both) i got the 360 from my college roommate whom after 3 RROD and no warranty ditched it and i ended up just paying the repair and keeping it. the ps3 is not more expensive, its just more complete. assemble a 360 to the way the ps3 is and you'll see that its not cheaper, its actually more expensive and even then it is still not (technological) superior to the ps3. the only reason those pieces for the 360 are so expensive is.............................. Microsoft.
although Microsoft deals with the majority of computer vendors they decided to not make their 360 universally compatible. that means that a bluetooth that you could get for 5 dollars on ebay cost you arround 50, just because microsoft sells it, and ahhhhhh he forgot to mention.
Remember that a blue-ray sits inside the ps3 which makes this case even more interresting lets see.
x-box 360:
1.) Console w/hard drive (60gb): $365 (amazon.com)
2.) Wirless adaptor: $100
3.) HDMI: $20
4.) X-Box Live: $50 A YEAR
and still you are missing something, BLUE-RAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah, how about getting that discontinued hd-dvd whichs according to microsoft was the equivalent to a blue-ray
stack up those 199 for that (when it was available) and now you have a 735 before tax machine thats not even worth half of it. with that money you get your hdmi and your controller plus a couple of games.
Im not a sony fan, i love the competition but this is microsoft ripping mentally challenged and ill informed consumers. the ps3 is superior to any console of this gen, sales do not represent superiority and you could see this by mac:pc sales or by Hyundai and Ferrari sales. do apples to apples not to oranges or in this case, rotten tomatoes. Enjoy your supcription and prepare to invest again in the next year or so, the ps3 still has a couple of more years to live
(WWWWWXXXDDDD) AC, they day humans open their eyes,

Xbox 360 with 60 gb HD and 2 Games plus controller- $299 (walmart)
Game -$60
Xbox Live 12mth - $39.88 (walmart)
Ethernet Cord -$10 to $25

Equals $408 -$423 plus tax

PS3 with 80 gb hd plus one game and a controller -$399
Game -$60
Blu Ray Remote -$19.82

Equals= $478.82 plus tax

So the 360 is cheaper, has the better selection of games (although the ps3 has some awesome games), it has arguably better graphics with most of it's games plus it is centered and built for online play while including games with awesome story lines.
by SilverFatalis May 30, 2009 7:46 AM PDT
plus if most people buy the ps3 just for the Blu-Ray player. That is a waste of money right there.
by opie187 May 31, 2009 6:47 PM PDT
after 4 red rings of death, i had no problem paying the difference for a ps3. plus i got one of the first 360's, so i had no hdmi, and after waiting about two months to get my 360 back (which actually wasn't mine, but someone else's broken 360 they had "fixed", i checked the serial numbers, and then that one didn't even work when i got it) it turns out i had been billed for the time it was being repaired. since i cancled the credit card, i now owed them money for the time they were fixing my console, and the "free month" card, wouldn't work untill i paid. in other words, microsoft not only makes a crap product, but they're a crap company that could care less about it's customers. i've never had a single problem with my ps3, and have had a way better experience overall. the free online experience is no different, so in a year or two you'll have made your money back. the only bad thing i can say about the ps3 is the lack of a headset when you buy the console. although from my experience on xbox live, majority of the headset use is annoying little kids anyway, which i don't miss at all. so i guess it's almost a good thing the ps3 doesn't come with a headset, anyone willing to spend money on it is going to use it for real, not to act like they're on american idol.

too soon to speculate, but what the "NEW" psp can do for me?,

TFT LCD ?
Wi-Fi 3G?
Cell Phone?
Windows Mobile?
Internal GPS?
Camera x.x pixels?

I hope got all this and more, then the "new" psp will replace all my junk into one, otherwise what's the point?

Why would sony release a gaming system with Windows Mobile? WHy would they even sell a psp phone? the psp is a multimedia/ gaming device that was meant for that task only. It doesn't need to be a cell phone.

Slimmed down PS3 so early?
PSP2 to be announced and then released within the year?
Hah.
Maybe PSP2 announced, but not released.
Sounds like a bad source to me.

This is Ars Technica's "Mole" and he's got a 100% track record so far. This "rumor" is as good as fact. Bet on it. The mole was also very clear in saying that Sony WILL NOT announce the new PS3 Slim at E3. That will probably come at TGS.

And they haven't announced a "PSP2", it's the PSP Go! No more UMD drive, but other than that, who knows what it will and won't have.

I'll buy the new PSP now that they have rid themselves of that clunky, breakable UMD mess. The unanswered question is how much memory will it have? Will games be played off the stick now? Need more info.

I wouldn't exactly call the UMD a "mess", but I agree the memory stick is a better option (especially when it's already right there and sold pretty much everywhere - and I do imagine games will be played off it) and some decent internal memory would be very welcome.
by moumou78 July 13, 2009 8:38 AM PDT
aye I agree, Sony is keeping this pretty close to their chest. They probably going to come out with some wifi based licence sharing and god knows, an expandable memory pack. Truth is I don't think they have thought this properly and they seem to be working things out as they go. Their main worry is that the new PSP GO is LESS HACKABLE!!

PS3: IMO they should be more worried with cutting the price than with slimming it down.

PSP: Nice, now just throw in some decent internal memory (i.e. in the order of GBs, not MBs), sell it at a different price (i.e. not more than ?250), and crackers will take care of the rest (i.e. firmware).

I'd hate to say this, but what they (Sony) needs to do is make a PSP, in which the monitor screen can do a 90 degree tilt. This is only because some games require you to tilt ur screen, in order to play it like a broader widescreen up and down ... and it's a bit difficult holding the game console in ur hands while viewing the screen from a titled angle.... ESPECIALLY with the buttons on the bottom and top of the screen... ugh. I know it sounds silly to ask for something like that when it's only like for only 2-3 games that I have in my possession

Or if anything make the game console more hand ergonomically friendly. My fingers kinda get a lil sore from the weight and the long play. Maybe this new PSP GO, will improve... we'll have to wait and see...
