We missed this bit of news last weekend, but Samsung has recently started selling its new Smooth clamshell, available from Verizon Wireless. The Samsung Smooth may be smooth, but it's definitely a low-end phone, with only a VGA camera offering, GPS, Bluetooth, speakerphone, voice command, and not much else. Still, the $29.99 price is hard to beat, and will be just fine for folks who mostly want a phone for making calls.

The following product mentioned is available.

On Sale Now: $0.00 - $49.73

ZOMG!! (Disclosure: sarcasm) Believe it or not, there is a market for these types of phones all you iPhoners, Crackberryettes, and ignorant socially-challenged wannabees. These phones are designed to do what a PHONE is suppose to do, which is making a telephone call. A vast majority of these simple, unassuming, underdog (insert your favorite overcoming adversity line here) phones get amazing battery life, better reception, and are more rugged for taking a hit/drop/life than say the iPhone or Storm (or any other smart-ish phone for that matter).

Also, you have to look at the fact that: not everyone needs to pay $200+ for a phone, pay $80+/mo for a contract, and *whoa - this just in*, a person may, MAY mind you, just use a phone for making calls. Crazy, isn't it?

So hey, you know what? I own a Storm, but that doesn't mean I am going to sit here and spew poo out of my mouth just because I think the only thing that should matter is my "fancy, all-encompassing, supreme ruler of the universe phone," and that anyone who doesn't own one should get one, or that their "simple" phones are somehow less relevant. Wise up and use your brain and realize there is a greater populous than just YOU (generalizations implied) and that some people may care about this.

LOL @ polis12 !!!

So true. I am happily chugging along with my 4-year old Motorola Q SmartPhone. Does everything I need: Music, Outlook, and most important easily MAKING AND RECIEVING clear PHONE CALLS.

Yes, believe it or not, some of us actually want a phone that - wait for it - JUST MAKES PHONE CALLS. I don't need a camera in my phone (besides, it's total crud [euphemism alert!] compared to my everyday camera). I don't send text messages, nor do I want to. I don't surf the Web on my phone, because I can't see anything on that tiny screen. So please, yes, give me a phone that's just a phone and isn't trying to be everything else at the same time.

I second the comments above in regard to phones that don't cost $200. My ancient Verizon "dumbphone" is on its way out, and I'm considering the Samsung Alias 2 since it's coming out soon and is supposed to cost $80 with rebates. Will CNET be reviewing that? I hope so.

Hey I'm a minimalist. I sometimes use an old $5 Nokia candy bar. I have a lap top for browsing and a digital camera for pix. I just bought a Smooth for $15 at Tar-gut. Its just what I want.
