On Friday, Motorola introduced its latest iDEN phone, the Motorola Clutch i465. The Clutch is the company's first iDEN handset to include a full QWERTY keyboard, and it offers threaded text messaging as well as support for multimedia messages and e-mail.

The i465 features a ruggedized design and meets military specifications for extreme conditions (e.g., shock, vibration, and dust). It also has a 1.79-inch, 128x160 TFT display, a VGA camera, Bluetooth 1.2, and 20MB of user-accessible memory.

The Clutch i465 is expected to ship in Q2. No details about pricing or carrier announcements were specified at press time, but the handset is compatible with Sprint and Boost Mobile's network, and given the feature set, we can't imagine the cost will be too high.

Looks like the screen has the Boost Mobile logo as a background. It would make sense to have a Nextel version to compete as a lower price point against the BlackBerry.

Does anyone know if I can use the i465 Clutch or some other smartphone from Boost as a modem for my laptop? I believe this is called tethering, but I don't know much about it and the Boost Customer Service people seem pretty clueless about this question.

You probably can tether if Motorola provides the software support. The only thing is that iDEN tethering is about as fast as connecting with a standard land based telephone. It is probably too slow for what most people demand from internet connections with large content downloads. I tether in emergencies now with my iDEN phone and the wait for the pages to load is mind numbing.

Yes, you can tether your laptop to you boost phone. I do.
Best of all, it's included in the $50/month plan.

You'll need a USB cable. I purchased a Motorola Data kit ($10), but all you really need is the cable, so check any local store.

I currently use an i335 connected to my Macbook. I only use this as a backup solution when I?m unable to find an open wifi signal and I?m not at home or in the office.

WARNING: The connection is NOT fast. I wouldn?t recommend streaming media (video or sound), but for grabbing mail over POP it?s GREAT!

When I first tried this, I started reading threads from

to help me with set up. Check it out. (No this is not my website or post.)

Well, I?m off to see if I can find an i465. Good luck on your new setup.
