Alright, so it's not actually a real mouse, just a foam prototype. In fact, we can't see anyone using something that looks as uncomfortable as this thing does. But what is it about the original Nintendo Entertainment System that has inspired such devotion and allegiance? We've seen sneakers, coffee tables, and MP3 players all paying their respects to the Nintendo original.

Even the Wii itself is a throwback to the NES. Take a look down at the console while it's laying flat. Notice something? Yep, it's the same exact shape as an NES controller port.

Granted it looks uncomfortable...but Ive never seen a 4way d-pad on the thumbside of a mouse. They should add a mini d-pad to like, a Logitech G5.

I'm sorry but the comparison about the Wii lying flat looking like an NES controller port is baffling. The author is just trying to draw comparisons that are not really there to fill out the article. So they are both rectangular but I highly doubt that the design engineers at Nintendo actually thought "let's make the Wii look like a NES controller port". The physical shape of the Wii has more similiarities to a PC's DVD-ROM drive then a NES controller port. A Wii can almost fit in a standard 5.25 drive bay.

No... it's pretty obvious that the Wii draws a great deal of influence from the classic NES.

Firstly with it's white shape and grey lift case, it's clearly emulating the offwhite adn slightly darker grey of the two tone NES console. Plus the divet out of the back of the unit emulates not only the shape of the controller port on the NES, but also the tapering of the unit at it's bottom.

Add to that the fact that wii remote itself is, when turned sideways, shaped to emulate the classic NES controller.

These are all obvious elements that the wii incorporated to evoke a sense of simplicity of game design that retro games and wii games are known for.
