Key-shaped USB drive solves my portable data dilemma

I promise this is the last time you'll hear about my keys.

When my colleague Dong Ngo introduced us to the LaCie key-shaped USB drive back in March, the timing could not have been better, as I had just ended yet another frustrating relationship with a keychain-based USB key.

I've gotten into the habit of keeping a USB drive attached to my keys in the past year. Moving into a new laptop on the average of twice a week, I got tired of re-downloading all the software I'd want on a just-unboxed laptop, and decided to create a package of must-have install files, including FireFox, AVG Free, Open Office, etc.

The problem was that every USB key I attached to my keychain would fall off in a matter of months or even weeks as the keyring holes on the end would fray and break. I hooked up the USB key with the biggest, heartiest keyring attachment I could find--in this case a 4GB PNY Attache. You can see the eventual results in the photo here.

Here's what a couple of months riding around in my pocket did to this poor USB key.

Apparently a lot of other people had the same idea I did, because while Amazon stocked the LaCie iamaKey USB Flash Drive, its shipping time was estimated as, "Usually ships within 1-2 months." Fortunately, the key only took about three weeks to arrive.

I've just loaded all my install files onto the 8GB drive, and attached it to my keyring. So far it shows no signs of wear and tear--although if I manage to somehow break this one, the problem might have been me, and not my plastic USB keys, all along.

Sorry plastic USB keys, I've moved on.

I see you still have the protective cap, there is now way you've had that in your pocket for long. That was the first thing to go on mine :0)> But I agree, it is a robust bit of kit.

Simpler answer to this problem is simply to stop making the end of the keys out of plain old plastic! I mean, car keys are REINFORCED with steel or aluminum in the part that hooks on the keyring.... USB keys should have that same thing on them!

its about time someone came up with this design...seriously!

Maybe that's the picture of the gorilla's arm while it's testing the strength of the USB key just like the old Samsonite luggage commercial. :)

Oh man that was the funniest thing I've read on here in a long time!

I feel for ya Dan...I have a Robin Williams amount of hair on my arms as well...its like always having a sweater on no matter the weather

Just kidding, I'm sure the ladies find your arms very appealing ;-)

Ahhhh, Dan...So nice of you to claim the arm in the picture, but as far as I can tell, the only name associated with that photo is Sarah Tew. It seems as if she is the one with the gorilla arm. Good job trying to pull a fast on on us. :P

I've been schlepping a pair of SanDisk Cruzers on my keychain for a couple of years now. The keychain attachment is made out of metal (though surrounded by plastic) and the connector is retractable so I don't have to worry about losing an endcap. Also, I keep them on a detachable thingamabob so the full weight of my keychain isn't hanging from my laptop or what-have-you as the Cruzers are in use.

I've got the Cruzer Micro also...It has a metal rod to loop a key ring around. It has never showed any sign of future failure, and it's been in my pocket for 1.5 years now.

I have a cruzer too...it broke off my keychain after about 6 months.

Some women actually find hairy arms sexy... wait , who said that... lol.
I have some old square, think it's 3 and 1/2 inch disks, remember those? I only bought a USB memory stick 2 years ago because I returned to college and was forced to buy one. But they are so small, I keep almost losing them, or leaving them in a computer. Is there anywhere I can buy large ones, or do they only come in 'small' and 'microscopic' sizes?

I know that it's not really a USB flash "stick" but it is in a sense. I'm talking about the Sandisk Ultra II Plus SD card that can be used as a USB stick as well. I bought one almost 2 years ago and it came with a key chain, and it's still working fine and the key chain case that came with it isn't broken yet (but it has some scratches)

Apparently, I'm the odd man out. Unless it's during the very brief summer season we get here in Michigan, I keep my keys in my coat. What works for me is a credit-card sized flash drive with clever but admittedly flimsy slide-out connector (http://www.amazon.com/Centon-DSC32GB-001-Credit-Flash-Silver/dp/B0012Z6JLG).

As things get smaller and smaller, the chances to lose them are becoming higher...... I lose my keys often, I lost my USB stick also recently....
