Seamstresses may find themselves out of job soon if Brother continues to develop sewing machines like the Innov-is 6000D. This multitalented gadget commemorates the Japanese company's 100th anniversary, and is probably what clothes makers and fashion designers dream of at night.

The Innov-is 6000D can not only sew, it is also capable of embroidery, quilting, and crafting. But what really sets this machine apart from its competitors are the advanced technologies that aid users in operating it.

The Innov-is 6000D has three USB 2.0 ports to attach compatible peripherals (such as a computer mouse, which we will touch on later) or to plug a USB stick in to transfer downloaded stitching patterns or upgrade the firmware. It also has an 8.5-inch touch-screen LCD where the menu can be navigated by using a mouse.

There is a camera built-in near the needle which gives you a closeup look at the stitches on the screen if you need to reposition or make amendments to the work piece. Brother has also incorporated a row of LEDs below the sewing arm to illuminate the work space and to facilitate the view for the camera.

With a few touches of the buttons, users can scroll through and choose from the 601 included patterns. If that is not enough, they can download or make their own patterns via the provided software.

Brother's target audience for the Innov-is 6000D are hobbyists, aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make and sell customized embroideries, and oddly, wives of expatriates, as the company's research shows many of these ladies often turn to sewing in their free time.

However, the Innov-is 6000D is not cheap. At S$11,888 (about $7,807) only those with deep pockets can probably afford this machine. Brother told us installment plans are available, depending on the retailers. So if you're still interested, buzz your local Brother office for more details.

It's amazing what sewing machines can do now-a-days. Not only has Brother come out with a machine that can work with a mouse but so has Baby Lock and Bernina. However, machines that can embroider and sew and open your drink (maybe not open your drink) have been around for a while and allow people create some cool stuff... especially gifts people oh and ah about. And let me tell you, new machines on the market excite sewers like fanatics of Apple products. Case in point - watch this video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju7H2qOSuFI).

There are also programs that you can add to your computer that allow you design your own art and then sew. It's like Photoshop for embroiders. Things are moving up in the sewing industry.

I hope CNET takes more notes to technology is sewing. They are going some really awesome things.
