Rumor: HTC Touch Pro2 headed to T-Mobile

Ever since the HTC Touch Pro2 was announced at GSMA 2009, everyone's been wondering when will the smartphone be available and which U.S. carrier will offer it. There's still no official word, but you know that never keeps tech community from sniffing out the details.

Now, thanks to a leaked ROM, multiple sites are reporting that the HTC Touch Pro2 will be headed to T-Mobile first. The test ROM, posted at xda-developers, shows the listed device as "RHOD21000" with the CID "T-MOB010" and language as "USA." To fuel the fire even more, the Boy Genius Report also has some fuzzy photos of a T-Mobile-branded Touch Pro2.

We always take these kind of rumors with a grain of salt, but it's no secret that T-Mobile is in desperate need of a Pocket PC phone refresh. The carrier's poor customers have been stuck with the T-Mobile Wing for a couple of years, while AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have at least gotten a variant of the HTC Touch Pro. More to come, we're sure, at CTIA Spring 2009.

I was hoping that T-mobile would step up their game & get this phone because the wing has been getting a little long in the tooth. I was lucky enough to get the wing a few days before it was officially release and I've been happy with it. I just hope that they don't disable any of the Pro2 functions & it works on their 3G network, otherwise for this user it will be dead on arrival.

Great hardware design, the keyboard looks really good and bringing the tilted screen function back from the Mogul days is a great idea. My only problem is the Windows Mobile OS needs more of a face lift than just being covered up my another manufacturer's Touch Flow 3D software. Windows Mobile has fallen generations behind compared to what the AT&T iPhone, TMobile Android, and the soon to be released Sprint Palm Pre can do. The updated IE6 browser on the Sprint Treo Pro is even way behind compared to how the named above phones handle internet browsing. Microsoft better hurry up with Windows Mobile 7 because Windows Mobile 6.5 looks like its not going to cut it for most people. I have enjoyed my current Sprint Windows Mobile 6.1 experience but after seeing what the other platforms can do, I must say that since I have no problems with Sprint, the Palm Pre looks like a good place to jump ship from Windows Mobile.

Which one is best with tmobile: htc touch pro 2 (windows mobile) or htc magic, AKA G2, AKA "my touch 3G" (android)? Best web browsing experience? I love the fact that I can use a winmo cell as wifi router but want the best interface possible.
Help me decide between these 2 phones that are about to be released on tmobile as I really want to get a new phone asap.
I currently have a bb pearl 8120 but never bothered to activate a data plan with it since a friend told me that web surfing was simply awful on it.
I use my ipod touch quite a lot and love the experience on it. Wish I could get wifi everywhere I go and use only that.
Would get an iphone if it weren't for the fact that I still have one year with a family plan with tmobile, plus I like their rates much more and love the service.
Please give me your input.
Thanks

The date is 7/11/09 I just got off the t-mobile customer service pda devices help line and pumped the service agent for some info. Although fairly tight lipped about the subject I was able to get confirmation on the Touch pro 2 (not the my touch3g) being released at tmobile usa. He just would not be specific about the date. When asked he said "very soon". So after some further interrogation I could only confirm that it would be released after the "My touch 3g /android", which is slated for 1st week of august.
I venture to guess it will be released Mid August to Early Sept. He was willing to confirm specs and they do not mention the forward facing camera for video conferencing. I believe the TMO usa version will have lost feature from the original HTC unlocked version.

well i saw the pics of the tmobile version and it looks like junk...basically verizon and sprint will all have something similar... but i couldnt wait for something i dont like. so i ended up paying $800 for the european version since it looks better and has a few more options like the front facing camera. etc. and with tmobile u will end up paying around $300 just for the phone with a 2 year contract. And t-mo also started a new thing that u will have to have the data plan in order to get the rebate. So if u want my opinion if i were u.... i would get the european version.

Well true it does not look as sleek, unfortunately t-mobile dumbs everything down. If you notice their phone selection page on their website looks like a bowl of skittles...".ewwww maybe we can attract the lil kiddies with bright colors since our phones are so dumbed down that no adult in the business world wants to use them!" But I hope they are starting to pull their heads out, with the intro of the dash 3g and the touch pro 2. I'm sorry for you that you spent $800. on a phone and also sorry that your video conferencing forward facing camera might not work very well because that phone won't work on TMO's 3g network (proprietery) Patience my friend.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
