Have any plans for the weekend? Yeah, I'm talking to you. If not, here's a suggestion: how's about some online Capture-the-Flag action (or Deathmatch action, whatever floats your boat) on Unreal Tournament III Black. Oh, and it's free. OK, so it's for the PC only and doesn't apply to the PlayStation 3, but it's still a pretty cool deal and it's something to do.

Whether or not you have the game, it's all good. The free weekend includes the game, the Titan Pack expansion, and the 2.0 patch. Now, all you have to do is sign up for a Steam account, which is also free, and you are good to go.

After the entire weekend hullabaloo dies down, Unreal Tournament III Black will be available on Steam at a 40 percent discount, costing around 12 bucks, and will remain so, right up until March 15.

In the meantime, go frag some people online tonight. Go ahead. Frag the hell outta them. (There are more than a few screenshots of the game below.)

What does Cnet have against posting a simple URL to the download for this game in its article? Why does Cnet continue to loop its readers through endless articles that refer only to other Cnet articles rather than give the reader a simple, clickable link to the outside world?

I eventually found http://store.steampowered.com/app/13210/ but there's only mention of playing the game for free this weekend. There's no mention of how to download the game for free. The site states you can buy the game so I think our Cnet author doesn't have her story completely straight - or, she got a tip on something neither she, Cnet or Steam will link to.

No link is really necessary, its downloaded from the program Steam. When you log in it automatically shows up, available for download. I wouldn't have known this at all if it weren't for this article. Thanks CNET!
Now if only the server wasn't so backed up...

...You obviously have never played a game on Steam before.
No URL necessary. Download Steam, then download the game from within Steam.

*this is more of a reply to your own reply*

You obviously didn't read the title of the article or any of the article. It clearly states that it is only available to play over the weekend. And as everyone else mentioned, all you have to do is download Steam and download the game from there. It's pretty self explanatory with the information provided by the article.

Thanks for the heads up, I missed out but it's always good to know when something like this happens :)

Download instructions:

1. Browse to: http://store.steampowered.com/
2. Click the "Get Steam Now" link (it's green and located right below the "Browse Games" list of categories)
3. Install Steam and create an account
4. Find the Unreal Tournament III product page by browsing or by clicking on the link that pops up during the news popups when Steam loads.
5. Click on the text link that reads "Play UT3 Black" in the little "Free Weekend!" blurb
6. Wait a LONG time for it to download :-)

Thanks for the heads-up Julie @ CNET. I would have missed this as well, and I have been looking for an excuse to spend less than $20 on UT3...

@nbfritz: Nice. Your welcome, and thanks for writing down the step-by-step instructions on how to acquire the game. Anything less than $20 is awesome nowadays, but for now it's great to be a gamer! ;-)

@thatasianguy: I figured their server was gonna be backed up this weekend :-(
