Just a day after Sprint announced the March 15 availability of the Palm Treo Pro, Alltel did one better and revealed on Thursday the immediate availability of the smartphone.

The Treo Pro can be purchased online or at Alltel retail stores for $199.99 with a service agreement and after discounts. The device runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition and has Wi-Fi, GPS, and EV-DO Rev. A support. You'll also be able to use the smartphone as a modem for your laptop.

Like the Sprint version, Alltel's model offers Internet Explorer Mobile 6, as well as a 2-megapixel camera, a full QWERTY keyboard, and a 2.5-inch, 320x320-pixel-resolution touch screen. You can find more information about the smartphone's design and feature set in our full review of the unlocked Palm Treo Pro.

Yea is a nice phone, and a lot of people are still lock in the WINMO wagon, further more, the people at Alltel needed a nice phone that will work with their new parent company (verizon), so great for them, but, I have Nextel, and I will love to know, when can I get my hands on the Pre? Come on Palm/Pre HURRY with the Pre release!!!

The Pre is a CDMA phone. I doubt they are going to be making any iDEN phones anytime soon. Gonna need to switch to Sprint for that.

I bought the unlocked version a few weeks ago and I gotta return it.

I was upgrading it from my blackjack II, which is now all scratched and the back case is hanging by a thread.

Yes, the touch screen is nice, and the design is business-friendly, but I'd be damned if I use a phone with such a lackluster camera! I was taking a pic of my new business suite and hte best I could get the quality was some weird 70's tint. I should have just slipped my digital camera in my pocket instead!

Plus, the battery life is saddening. Yes, there are measures where you can save it a few, but mostly it's nowhere comparable to other phones I've used.

Finally, it's quite heavy. It's clearly a phone that you can't hide in your pockets - you must use a case for it.

Add that with the fact that features seemed to be missing from the non-touchscreen version of 6.1 and I quickly went back to my BJII at the end of the week.

@sshtdifferentday:
Duh! For your info, Sprint/Nextel are one company! My comment meant, that, since I have Nextel, and I like the Pre, I will be getting it, without changing to another company, I know Palm does not make iDEN phones. Hope that explains it for you.

I know they are one company. HOWEVER, when people refer to having Nextel, they are referring to only the iDEN network. When people refer to Sprint, they are referring to their CDMA network. Despite the fact they are one company, they are still operating two distinct networks.

Why do you think they still brand the iDEN featuers Nextel Direct Connect.

So yes, in fact, you are switching to the Sprint network.

@sshtdifferentday:
You really are stupid, aren't you? You simply don't know, i guess 'cause you don't have Sprint/Nextel, but i do, since i have a hybrid phone (ic902), which uses the best of PTT (iDEN), and CDMA in one device. SOOOOOOOOOOOO, i have ONE phone in ONE NETWORK!!! But i forgive you, it is my fault, for not saying this before, i just mentioned the fact of having a Nextel for short of Sprint/Nextel, i guess i like the Nextel name better than Sprint! And for your info we (Sprint/Nextel customers) are like that, we can say Nextel or Sprint for short, also, they brand the iDEN featuers Nextel Direct Connect, because that's the fancy for Push To Talk (PTT), than again, someone like you would not understand, anyhow, i have been with Nextel for about 8 years, have an account with 5 phones, and also i am a Premier Customer, so, i will be one of the first to get the Pre, you can do or say whatever you want, that won't change anything. So have a nice life!!!
