Rumor: PS3 price cut imminent?

There's continued talk of a $100 price drop on the 80GB version of the PlayStation 3.

(Credit: Sony)

Another week, another rumor that a PS3 price cut is right around the corner. This time the fuel comes from Janco Partners' Mike Hickey, who, according to the site gamesindustry.biz, said in his latest note to investors that Sony needs to chop $100 off the 80GB PS3's price to "restart unit velocity at retail" and that "recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days."

To cap things off, Hickey added more brutal commentary:

"If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console."

In the same article, there's also some bizarre speculation that Sony will put out a PS3 sans Blu-ray player. This seems a little off the wall, considering that you wouldn't be able to play most PS3 games on a PS3 that doesn't have a Blu-ray player. Plus, the PS3 is basically a Trojan horse for Blu-ray.

Maybe what this really means is that Sony is working on a PS3 version of the PS2 that could play downloadable PS3 games and be backward-compatible for PS2 titles. (OK, I'm kidding, but see if you can say that sentence fast five times in a row with perfect elocution).

When all is said and done, we do agree with Hickey and other so-called analysts who say Sony has to cut the PS3's price by $100 to jump-start sales (duh, right?).

But we've seen specials recently where the PS3 is already selling for less than $350, so in some sense, a soft price cut has been in effect, though a flat $300 is what people are waiting for. The question is whether we're days--or weeks--away from an official cut.

What do you guys think?

It's need to be $299, and it needs to be soon, as in now.
You know, Killzone 2 comes out Friday. That might not be a bad day to drop the price. Just a thought...

Just make a version without the blu-ray function or figure out a way to lock the function and then later you can pay $100 to unlock via a download code or something and sale the system for $199. Now PS3 has the hardware advantage over Xbox 360 with built in wifi and free online. Blu-ray isn't mainstream yet and it is still expensive.
by tcr071 February 26, 2009 7:27 AM PST
The problem is cost. Blocking the function won't lower the cost of manufacturing the hardware.

Built in wi-fi is an advantage for sure but I would be MORE than happy to pay $50 to have an Xbox Live type program on the PS3.
by Firehazel February 26, 2009 4:20 PM PST
@sobishop
Blu-Ray function is required to play games on PS3. They are written on blu-ray. or are you talking about disabling the movie function?

I don't want to start swarrring but I do have to say that the idea of having a similar service as xbox live is not a good kick starter for ps3 sales, I work for FutureShop/Best Buy, so I would know what kind of features customers want with their systems. Ps3 is an awsome system already when it comes to quality, its features are plentyful and adding another paid service would acutally give people more reason to buy the xbox because then they are thinking well if I'm paying money for the playstation live network or what ever you might call this paid service they why not buy the xbox which is cheaper and has a bigger selection of games. To come back to the topic of this blog, all that sony needs to do is drop the price by $100, if they want to save money on production then one option which probably no one has considered yet is taking out the dual-shock out of the dual-shock controller that comes inside the box with the playstation 3. People care about that but they wouldn't care if they see that the price has dropped by a $100. Sony could even make more money on that because if they keep the dual-shock inside the controllers on the shelf then people who didn't have the money when they bought the system would come back later and buy a second controller then, it would also give them even more reason to buy a second controller because now all of the sudden the second controller has an advantage over the one they already have. Hope people agree with me or maybe somebody can come up with a better idea on how sony can decrease the price.

Consumers don't care about online experience? What??

In order of importance:
Game lineup
Online Service
Price
Features

Who cares about features? Blu-ray doesn't make my games any better nor does any of the other features that "set the PS3 apart." Wi-fi, SD card reader, huge hard drives, bluetooth, etc. None of those enhance my gaming experience.

Instead of focusing on what the consumers actually wanted Sony made the goal of the PS3 to push their new proprietary format, Blu-Ray. We don't need blu ray to play video games yet as Microsoft and Nintendo have CLEARLY displayed. If Rockstar can fit GTA IV onto a DVD-9 then the current format can suffice for the rest of this generation.

Had Sony shipped the PS3 with a 40GB hard drive, wi-fi, and NO blu-ray they could have come in at $400 just like Microsoft did, keep backwards compatibility, spend more time on a better online offering, and have a lot more options down the road to reduce the price without affecting the bottom line.

As it stands now the PS3 is dragging around a boat anchor, Blu-ray, which will continue to keep the prices up or cause more RED in Sony's earning reports.

Well I already bought mine so it won't matter to my pocketbook. However; as mentioned in the article, if they lower the price enough to pick up more sales, then perhaps other developers will start to make developing for the PS3 a priority. Right now the PS3 is the Xbox 360's ugly sister as far as attracting new software titles and content goes - everything seems like it is made for the 360 and then ported (which does a huge disservice to the PS3 as a port is never as good - e.g. Fallout 3)

More like $199. Especially with $60 games. Everyone who had the deep pockets for the $399 and $599 ps3's have purchased already. Now they have to move units cuz most people have to buy hd tv's along with these things.

ha ha... and yet pay $250 for a wii. or the same price for an arcade. i dont have deep pockets, but i buy my moneys worth. $299 would be an amazing price, $199 would just not make any logical sense.
by Shaun822 February 25, 2009 5:50 PM PST
At 299 Sony would be able to argue the technical aspects of the machine better than they can at 399. At 299 you can look at the PS3 and say, "Hey it's only 49 dollars more than a Wii and the same price as a Xbox 360 with HDD. And, you get a Blu Ray player and wi fi connectivity included."
by drbyte February 25, 2009 8:21 PM PST
No need for a new hd tv with a wii.
by Shaymojack February 25, 2009 9:32 PM PST
"Have to buy hdtv's" isn't right. Just about everyone who bought an HDTV to go with their system would have done so quite a while ago.
by MrOlympiaUSAF February 26, 2009 4:33 AM PST
$200 is the price I would be willing to pay or at least offer 2 controls and a game or two for the $300 price.

I got my 80GB PS3 for $249 in December with a $150 rebate offer from Sony Rewards. Anybody, who paid retail for a PS3 needs to brush up their shopping skills.

And they still offer a $100 off as well.
by guitarbandit7498 February 26, 2009 7:41 AM PST
If you bought an 80G PS3 for $249 then you bought a used machine. You're not going to go into a Best Buy or a Wal Mart and haggle with the price. The price is set and they're not going to change it till Sony says so. So don't even try that **** chump...
by mdub311 February 26, 2009 8:07 AM PST
@ guitarbandit7498

It wasn't a used system you chump! I got the same deal. If you sign up for a Sony Rewards CC, then they offered a $150 rebate which takes the price down to $249. I got mine through Dell last December for a sweet deal. I got Far Cry 2 included in my bundle with a dualshock controller for $395 including shipping and taxes. So that's $244 plus a free $60 game (which I took to Wal-Mart and got a $67 gift card), so in reality I got mine for $177. Chump!
by Jefferson101 February 26, 2009 8:20 AM PST
Yes Guitar, they are right and you are a chump. However, the Sony Rewards program has had a few flaws with customer service and speed.

"Analyst Mike Hickey with Janco Parters said the April 29 release of Rockstar's GTA IV may eat into ticket sales for the May 2 theatrical release of Iron Man." - I'm not sure I'm putting so much faith in Mike's predictions. The inclusion of the Blu-Ray player has been essential to sales, but with stand alone unit prices falling below premiums since the 08 holidays, there is a greater need to re-evaluate the pricing structure of Sony's product. What other analyst information have you researched?

i am still waiting for them to re-release the 60gb version that is backward compatible with ps2 titles. if they had kept that SKU going at $299 it would have sold like pancakes. but apparently they are retarded over there.

by Shaun822 February 25, 2009 5:51 PM PST
I agree if they had kept the machine with the backwards compatibility it would probably be selling better than any SKU they currently have because people wouldn't have to restock their game libraries.
by Zoobie February 25, 2009 6:22 PM PST
The backward compatibility argument makes sense if they make money selling the hardware--but they don't. Sony wants you to restock games. Don't get me wrong, I've held off buying a PS3 because of the lack of backward compatibility and the excellent library of cheap PS2 games that I still haven't played. At $299, I will consider moving up.
by nismo2nr February 25, 2009 4:17 PM PST
Of course a price cut is imminent. This was found on the internet, it's GOTTA be true! (sarcasm). The PS3 is a great all in one, and that is why the price is so steep. If they released a console minus wifi, with a very small HDD, no chrome, a wired controller (which doesn't exist), they would reduce costs only a little bit. Maybe if they did something like give a rebate to anyone who bought KZ2 or offered the 5 free blu ray deal again they'd do something, but selling the console at over $100 loss is not going to happen, they are losing about $40 on each one right now, and they still have a way to go to get it to a profitable point.

Yes, a price drop WILL have to happen, since they're losing a hell of a lot more than $40/per if they're NOT SELLING AT ALL. There's no traction to the PS3, even with BD movie capability. The REAL money has been in the games, and that's what the PS3 needs to pander to. As much as I like my MGS 80GB PS3 (still backwards compatible), I don't use it nearly enough for gaming. Maybe Killzone 2 will change that, but so far the bloody thing HAS been a boat anchor when it comes to usage, since I'm way too cheap and dislike Hollycrock enough NOT to buy or even rent Blu-ray movies, and not enough great exclusive titles exist for the thing (I end up buying 360 or PC versions of the cross-platform games, mostly because I'm not convince how long the PS3 will survive given Sony's current business model for the platform).
by jsnowbordr47 February 25, 2009 4:33 PM PST
Actually I'd be all for having a stripped down PS3. I mean yes the PS3 as it is right now does come with a whole bunch of stuff, but I don't really need all of that stuff.

Give me a model with a 20-30 GB Hard Drive, No Wi-Fi, and a wired controller and price it at $199 and I'll buy it. I don't need wi-fi when my router is right next to the TV.

But then again, I don't think it would be possible for Sony to do that. With so many games requiring installations, I'd probably fill up a 20GB hard drive after only 6 games. That's probably why they've discontinued the lower memory models. My cousin has a 60GB model and most of the space on his hard drive is taken up buy the game installations.

But then again, there are only a few games exclusive to the PS3 (MGS4, KZ2, LBP) that I would want to own anyway, so maybe I'd be okay with a 20GB model.lol

well you can always take out the drive and not affect the warranty on the PS3

i just found a 320GB HD for $80 and free shipping online. freakin cheap.
by Archaenon February 25, 2009 5:04 PM PST
The only reason it needs a price cut is because of a recession. I think the 400.00 pricepoint is fine. I already have one , so I guess my opinion is pointless. I didn't have to break the bank to buy one , and buying my xbox + all the stuff to make it do what the PS3 does out of the box cost me well around 600.00.

Why are we not whining about the xbox pricepoint and it's failure to deliver a decent working console?

"Why are we not whining about the xbox pricepoint and it's failure to deliver a decent working console?"

Because the was an article about the PS3?

Easy there fanboy, there will be plenty of time to bash the 360 when the article actually pertains to it.
by MrMurder February 25, 2009 5:25 PM PST
I already have a PS3. No, Sony's not going to take out the Blu-ray drive. It's probably going to take off some the other features.

I think that the price cut is indeed on the way. I already pulled the trigger and bought a PS3 for $319 just a week or two ago from Dell. I think that $319 was a good price for what you get out of the box with wireless controller, blu ray, wi-fi, etc. Now, I already had a 360 Platinum, but the PS3 will complement the 360, as well as the N64 and PS2 still laying around. I suppose I'll eventually get a Wii.

One thing I do suspect Sony will do though is give a price cut, but the $299 PS3 will be a PS3 lite, or Diet PS3. Basically, it will be the PS3 version of a 360 arcade....wired controller, small hard drive, or no hard drive at all, barebones.
by AdelheidBernstein February 25, 2009 6:10 PM PST
Hmm... Perhaps they're going to keep the Blu-ray drive, but disable Blu-ray movie disc playback, so that a price drop doesn't further undermine products from other Blu-ray player manufacturers? Just a thought.

by ReesesLee February 26, 2009 12:31 PM PST
This will just hurt Sony because Sony makes money from Blurays ...they actually want/need more people to get into Bluray sales (along with game sales) which will eventually help cover for the loss of $$$ from the hardware and where they hope to make a profit.
by AdelheidBernstein February 28, 2009 12:54 PM PST
ReesesLee - But they could get revenue from PS3 software and accessory sales, from consumers who held out on purchasing a PS3 because they don't value Blu-ray movie playback.

I'm thinking nixing Blu-ray playback in a lower price PS3 might also keep other Blu-ray manufacturers from revolting against Sony, since the current-priced PS3 probably undermines a lot of their Blu-ray movie player sales among casual consumers.

totally agreed. i would also buy the ps3 with 100 dollar price reduction....but the idea of a diet ps3 is ********. if they are having problems selling their current equipment why reproduce something of less quality and try to push that?

I'm looking at the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player more than anything else. But I'm not buying it at $400 or $300 without a Netflix streaming ability. IF they want me to buy, it's as simple as adding this option, soon, since I'll be purchasing something soon.

Install a BLURAY drive in your computer, the bluray drives which only read are very cheap right now under a $100 even some drives are dvd burners and has bluray read enable. thats waht i did, i really wanted bluray, but i think about it and buy just what i really need it. not the whole ps3 just to end playing movies and not gaming. take a lookat frys webpage. i bought a liteon which is basically the same as sony, for 90 bucks :). theres a lg bluray drive with dvd burner and hd-dvd read i think. but dont waste yur money on a ps3 just for movies. http://shop2.frys.com/product/5479679?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG try always to search for OEM when buying something, ie windows vista. you will have a full version for much less .

As far as the $100.00 price cut goes -- if you go to the Sonystyle website and look hard enough you can order it there, sign up for the sonystyle visa card. This $100 off offer has been there silently for well over a yera now. I actually just checked and now they make it PS3 specific, instead of applicable to any purchase from sonystyle.com -- they usually offer free shipping, too. I got mine this way waaaay back when Wiis were selling for $600 each on ebay.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644604396

Its great!!! As a blu-ray player. Games? Crashed on GTA4 install and until deleting, downloading patch, reinstalling. Metal Gear Solid - nothing special. It would be nice if they made games for it, though. I can't stand the control pad for 360.

Why would Sony pay to have the blu-ray hardware in the PS3 and not have customers pay for it initially. Someone could hack the system and gain access to the blu-ray function without payment and you need the blu-ray function to play games in the first place. Blu-ray is a necessity for the PS3 to be a game console.

listen... the games that come on the bluray disc for the PS3 can fit on what is called a DVD 9. That is the same disc that Nintendo uses as well XBOX games. Developers aren't making some special massive game just because you give them the option. You in fact are buying the same game as everybody else just on a disc with more capacity. The Bluray disc is not needed to play a video game. Check the campacity of a bluray disc and then find out the size of a finished game title... you'll figure it out. They used people to get bluray in your home. The last GTA game fit on a DVD 9... you may ask how so... just check it out.
