Over the past 10 years, we've watched as MP3 player flash memory crawled slowly up from its painful 64MB beginnings, to today's spacious 32GB devices. Hard-drive-lugging file hoarders will still scoff at the comparatively low capacity of flash-based MP3 players, but for many users, a slim 32GB player strikes the perfect balance of convenience and storage.

We expect to see a slew of 32GB MP3 players pop up throughout the year (such as the Samsung P3 and Sony X-Series), but for now, there are only five such MP3 players worth considering. Take a look.

Donald Bell is CNET Reviews' senior editor for MP3 players and portable audio, and one half of the MP3 Insider blog and weekly podcast. He also likes getting his hands dirty with digital audio tools for musicians and DJs.

Don't forget the 32GB Cowon S9 which is coming out later this year. n

This list does show how bare the 32GB player market is though. I'm hoping someone will break the 64GB barrier this year.

This has to be the lamest excuse for an actual comparative article I have ever read. "Info unavailable" was the most common comparative entry. Why pretend to compare mp3 players if you can't be bothered to the most rudimentary research? Are you really saying there is no info on what software the iPod uses?

Truly pathetic.

I am a proud owner of the Zen x-fi 32GB, amd I love it so much. I had decided that I could not buy an MP3 player with anything less than 32GB, and I was so thrilled when this player came out. I would recommended it to anyone who wants a player with plenty of space. remember that you can add up to an additional 32 GB with the SD card slot. As of right now, this is one of the closest MP3 players to 64 GB with flash.

hi Yankeesfanx10<

How is the integration of the music/video from the SD card? i have the Creative zen 16gb, but really disliked the fact that the SD card was a totally separate drive. I have a Cowon D2 now and love the integration, but miss the navigation of the Zen.

If half of the information about the players is NOT available, how can you compare those players. cNet should get this info before taking trouble of comparing them.
