Boxee is expanding its content and potential audience.

The free software that streams Web content directly to the TV has added ABC to its arsenal of content providers. Boxee already offers access to Hulu, Joost, YouTube, Netflix, and CBS (parent company of CNET publisher CBS Interactive).

The software is publicly available to Mac, Linux, and Apple TV users. Windows users can join too, but they have to ask for an invite, as that version is now a private alpha release.

Boxee says 200,000 Mac, Linux, and Apple TV users signed up as of early January.

I?ve had Boxee for a few months now. I love it, but the video still could be improved. Hulu videos don?t seem quite as clear, and often aren?t full screen. I tried ABC last night and it works well, but was a little ?jiggy?. It would freeze for a second, then speed up to catch up, about once a minute or two. The picture was crystal clear as it normally is from the ABC player. All in all it?s still in development, but it is going to be an excellent product once they get all the bugs out of it.

I run boxee on Linux and now (as of a couple days ago) Windows. I like it a lot, but I still prefer XBMC for playing my local media, and just use boxee for streaming video. Of course, I don't get ABC on either of my platforms, and I don't get Netflix either. And since I really have no intention of buying a mac just to run boxee, these limitations are really starting to annoy me.

Too bad Boxee on my mac never worked, despite emails for support (no response) and numerous mentions of the same issue on their support forum.
