iPhone to land in Vermont

by Kent German

The iPhone: Coming soon to Vermont.

Vermont may have gorgeous scenery, maple syrup, and civil unions, but up until now it hasn't had the iPhone. Since the Green Mountain State is one of the few states to lack native AT&T service, Vermonters have been left out of the iPhone classic and iPhone 3G scramble. Sure, they could buy them somewhere else and use the phones in Vermont, but it wasn't quite the same.

But as the Burlington Free Press reported recently, AT&T's acquisition of Unicel will bring Apple's phone to the state. Unicel's 10 stores in Vermont will be stitched over to AT&T by February and the full slate of AT&T phones will be available in them. The extent of HSDPA coverage will be patchy, no doubt, but Apple fans can get their phones, finally.

I don't need iPhone. I am using Moto V3XX running FREE LifeInPocket app which offers most iPhone things and can do many things iPhone cannot offer. e.g. Voice GPS Navigation, active GPS location messaging.

I'm a Vermonter. I would bet my last drop of maple syrup that the iPhone experience we get will be a far cry from what most users are used to. Outside of Burlington, (our largest city) cell phone service is spotty or non-existent. It makes owning a cell phone a frustrating experience that is unreliable at best. I bought a Virgin pay as you go phone for my honeymoon to the US Virgin Islands. I had better coverage in the freakin Carribbean than we do here in the states. 3G?......Hahahahahaaaaa! We have a lot of folks who are left to decide between dial-up internet or outrageously priced (and crappy) satellite internet. Vermont is like the Flintstones for high tech...we're too small and spread out for anyone to want to spend the money to make statewide broadband and cell coverage a reality.

I hate being restricted by Apple. I would rather watch TV channels around the world and movies in 1080p Blu-ray on my PC and set top box on MyTVPAL ( mytvpal.com ) that's made using Matrixstream ( matrixstream.com ) IPTV platform.

I too am a Vermonter and I share that seniment. We have been left out in the cold as far
as bringing technology to the interior of the state. I am sending this note via dial-up. I have
been trying for years to convince Verizon and now Fairpoint Communications to include
my "hill" for wireing up for broadband. I have been promised the first quarter of 2009, but
I've heard that before.
Frustrated in the Green Mountains.....

Vermont isn't the only state....Montana and Idaho you can't get an iPhone and I'm sure there are others.

You could live in Las Vegas as I do and enjoy AT&T's very spotty service or no service. I live in the city and have to stand in the driveway to enjoy just one bar on my iPhone. At least my Wi Fi connection makes the iPhone a pleasure to use for data.

In Hawaii, AT&T's service is another matter. It was mostly five bars and 3G service even on some pretty desolate parts of Maui.
