Zune user-elect Obama

by Matt Hickey

I've remained steadfastly neutral on this whole iPod versus Zune thing. I use an iPhone, so it's easy for me to sit out, but before I got my iPhone, I had both a Zune and an iPod. I liked both quite a bit and still do. They both offer something the other doesn't. I won't go into details, as we've already done that today, but you should know something about your next president: He uses a Zune, at least according to reporter.

According to Clog, the blog of Philadelphia's City Paper weekly, a writer was in a gym working out when the president-elect came in for his morning work out. And the president-elect, it seems, pulled out a Zune and listened to it while reading USA Today. And yes, that writer says he's sure of what he saw. (To be fair, Obama's also been known to carry an iPod).

But still, I'm not sure how I feel about this. My first thoughts are that I'm glad we've got a tech-minded president-elect. He's one of us in that regard. But my second thoughts are, of course, why a Zune? I like the Zune. I have a Zune. I have many, many friends who work on the Zune team. I'm not saying it's a bad choice, I'm saying it's an interesting one. I wish I could ask the man himself.

Update at 6:02 p.m.: Debate over this highly controversial issue continues. Thursday, The Wall Street Journal cited an Obama spokesman who claims the Philadelphia reporter was wrong and that the president-elect, in fact, uses an iPod.

...he got it free/gratis from a MSFT lobbyist, or as a present from someone else?

Who gives a damn? Are we going to be inundated with stupid stories like "Obama cuts his fingernails on Thursdays" and "Obama admits he's a socialist" and "Obama took a crap today, and it is green!".

I really would rather hear about the politics he's screwing up than his personal life.

Yeah. I think we'd all rather hear about McCain's 8 track collection.

I thought McCain had one of those high-tech grammaphones CNET refuses to review.

regardless of your political stance, this is a bit much. at this rate, we're all going to be obama-ed out before he even takes office.

I think a better question to ask is Why not? Change is inevitable one day it's iPod, tomorrow, that will probably change.

It`s well known by people who actually use the Zune that the 3.0 Zune software is much better than iTunes.
I have heard long time Apple iPod users describe iTunes as a "monolithic , bloated , spreadsheet " WOW !
Apple makes bloated , bug-filled software , while the Zune interface is clean , simpler and faster , and also is INNOVATIVE. Funny how MSFT can change when they have to due to competition.

Considering that Prez-elect Obama & his family use Macs, I find it unlikely that he personally uses a Zune since the software for the Zune is Windows-only. Perhaps he borrowed one because he forgot his own iPod.

According to Microsoft's Zune software system requirements: "Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (Home, Professional, Tablet PC, Media Center Edition 2005) or Windows Vista (all editions)" Note the lack of Mac OS X.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
