Amazon's Kindle 2 now slated for early next year?

by David Carnoy

The Kindle 2 is now rumored to arrive early next year.

Last month Boy Genius Report got its hands on some photos of what appeared to be the Kindle 2, so speculation was rampant that Amazon would release a new Kindle for the holidays. However, Amazon has continually denied it would have a new Kindle in 2008, and it seems clear that no new device is imminent. Today, though, Crunch Gear, which put out the original rumor on the Kindle 2, is now saying that it has it on good authority that the Kindle 2 will show up early next year.

Crunch Gear's founder Michael Arrington writes, "It was scheduled to be released in October in time for this holiday season, but Bezos himself reportedly pulled the plug for last minute changes to the software. Our sources now say it's tentatively scheduled to go on sale in 'early next quarter.'"

Crunch Gear turned out to be wrong last time, but the good news is everybody's expecting this thing to come out early next year, so chances are Arrington's probably right--or at least tentatively right. And heck, it doesn't take a Boy Genius to figure out that a Kindle 2 (and maybe even a Kindle 3) will come out in 2009.

What's a little lost in all this is that people haven't been all that impressed with what they've seen from the leaked images of the Kindle 2 (if it is indeed the Kindle 2). On the surface, it doesn't seem to be that much of an improvement over the original Kindle, but perhaps Amazon has been able to lower the price on the unit and add features we don't know about.

In the meantime, Sony's $400 PRS-700 Digital Reader is now available for sale. Our review is due to post shortly, and while the new Sony is sleeker than the Kindle, has a touch screen, and plenty of other other improvements, a couple of screen issues prevent it from truly giving the Kindle a run for its money. Perhaps if Sony really had a Kindle-killer, Bezos would have been more aggressive about releasing a new model.*

See, this whole speculation thing is easy. Please feel free to comment.

*Correction: As a reader points out, the Kindle is sold out through the holidays and Amazon isn't,"sitting on a ton of Kindles it has to move during the holiday season" as I originally suggested.

For E-readers to be a viable alternative the hardware price needs to drop or the E-book price needs to drop. With the current cost of book downloads, the time it would take to off set the cost of the hardware still makes this a hard sell. I want an E-reader but buy in cost to saving just isn't there yet.

Since the Kindle is sold out through Christmas at Amazon and are going on ebay for $200 over retail I don't think that Amazon overestimated demand.

I would buy a Kindle in a heartbeat if they had 3G service in my area. They need to have a WiFi option for those of us without 3G.

Do you have a computer? You can go that route w/ the USB connection...
Sony would have a chance IF they added wireless!
Kindle ROCKS!

The Sony is absolutely the better looking unit. The deal-breaker is that it isn't wifi or Sprint-enabled. I hear that color is several years away. That's what will really make these move.

why do you want Bezos to get aggressive about releasing the kindle 2? I would rather see a good product that is ready for public use than a product pushed out the door because sony had a product out there.

Amazon started selling company refurbished models recently with full warranty. Looks like a gifting option for the holidays that beats ebay prices.

I own a Kindle. It's great and worth the price because of the convenience and enjoyment I get from it (but who would complain if it's lower?). If you like to read, it's wonderful. If you're looking for color and comics, an e-reader isn't you. The vast majority of negative comments I've seen about Kindle are from peope who are not avid readers (of books) or owners of a Kindle.

While the Sony reader is sleeker, the availability to purchase seamlessly via a free 3G service in the Kindle is very convenient. I have thoroughly enjoyed and read way a lot more books on my Kindle than if I did not have one. Admittedly, the design can use more improvement but that does not detract from enjoying its primary purpose which is reading. Now, if they launch Kindle 2 with better design, will I be lining up to buy one? Probably not (but then, I love gadgets, especially nice looking ones so I might be tempted); unless they considerably lowered the price.

Once prices come down...I'll jump. I actually think that owning a Kindle would actually increase my non-internet reading in the same way that having a Netflix account "forces" me to watch a more diverse set of movies and iTunes makes the barrier for music discovery and purchase as low as it is.

I saw the Sony Reader in Walmart and read a few pages of the stock book they had and was really pleased with the display and format. But it's the wireless distribution of books and hooks into Amazon that preclude me from considering it.

Hi, I'm interested in buying an e-book readers but I'm new to them. First, does only the kindle have a dictionary included? Are there other brands other than Sony? Does anybody know about the cybook? What do I have to look for when purchasing a good one?
Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.
