Hell hath no fury like an avatar scorned

This is what all the fuss was about?

A Japanese woman murdered her husband after he suddenly divorced her. Nothing (sadly) strange or funny about that. What is strange is that this was not her real-life husband, but her husband in the MMORPG Maple Story, according to an Associated Press report. What's funny is that she only killed his online avatar, not the actual person.

The 43-year-old woman has been jailed under suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating data. She allegedly hacked into her "husband's" account after he divorced her in the game. Apparently she accessed his username and password, logged on, and killed/deleted his character. It's unclear exactly how she got rid of it.

Police officials in Japan said she had not plotted any revenge in the real world. "I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the police official quoted the woman as saying.

You know, I'd probably be pissed too if someone "divorced" me in a game I'd been taking a bit too seriously. I have to say though, that I would much rather be divorced than have my character that I've worked years developing suddenly deleted. Hmmm, maybe it's time they both got lives though.

Just for the record, I'm not saying that everyone who plays Maple Story has no life. Just most of you. Try a real game. I kid because I love.

Eric Franklin refused to write a bio, saying, "Why are you bothering me about this bio business again? If I wanted people to know more about me, I'd send them to the Inside CNET Labs Podcast" (shameless plug). E-mail Eric.

Why is this news? The woman was arrested on charges of HACKING, not killing an avatar. I clicked the title thinking I'd be reading about some strange online drama. She just signed into this guys account and deleted it. Big whoop. What a waste of time.

To answer the above question, the two weren't legally married in the real world. They were only pretend married in the game. I feel sorry for this woman because it sounds to me like she's a vary lonely person. Rather than throwing her in jail, they should help her get counselling instead.
