T-Mobile G1 data plans

T-Mobile just informed us of data plans specific to the T-Mobile G1 (these do not include the voice plan). The first plan has unlimited Web, e-mail, and messaging for $35. This plan includes:

  • Unlimited Web
  • Unlimited e-mail
  • Unlimited messaging (text, picture, and IM)
  • T-Mobile HotSpot data access

The second plan has unlimited Web and e-mail and 400 messages for $25. This plan includes:

  • Unlimited Web
  • Unlimited e-mail (unlimited, part of Web/data)
  • Unlimited IM on Google Talk
  • 400 total messages (text messages, picture messages, non-Google Talk IM)
  • T-Mobile HotSpot data access

Update: We just heard that the data plans aren't really unlimited. According to the T-Mobile website:

"If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less. Your data session, plan, or service may be suspended, terminated, or restricted for significant roaming or if you use your service in a way that interferes with our network or ability to provide quality service to other users. Some devices require specific data plans; if you do not have the right plan for your device, you may not be able to use data services. Some downloads, such as movies, music, and games, not included. Domestic use only."

Sure you'll be paying a flat fee for your data so in that sense it's "unlimited," but if T-Mobile decides to cap your bandwidth to 50 kbps or less, what use is it? That's less than even EDGE speeds. We're hoping that this is just standard legalese and that T-Mobile won't actually do this, but this isn't looking too good.

Update Sept. 25: Looks like T-Mobile has backtracked on its 1GB data cap. Find out more here.

I've been with T-Mobile for about a year now with a 14.99 add-on that gives unlimited text/multimedia messages and a 19.99 add-on that gives unlimited internet/email/hotspot access. So I've technically been saving $0.02 over the $35 G1 plan A. Then again, I've been doing it at EDGE speeds, so maybe I've not gotten as good a deal as I thought.

i would get an android and definitely consider this plan over the 3g's, as my mom already has it for her iphone. Edge speeds are actually quite adequate.

The unlimited web is not unlimited as the below line taken from www.t-mobileg1.com

I'm currently with Sprint on the data only plan. Expensive $90 a month, but truly unlimited. I'm a blogger and frequently top 15 gig throughput with flash video and research + this is my only link to the net. No home line. I truly am setup to be totally mobile with laptop. Still, I envy the g1. Just wish I could find a device that works like the old HP Jornada 720. Wide aspect screen you can actually read without scrolling back and forth for an 80 character line, 75% full touch type keyboard, clamshell, and it would still fit in a shirt pocket with about 2 inches sticking up above the top of the pocket. If it had phone capabilities, it truly would be my all-in-one blogger, vlogger, alogger device.

T-Mobile will be a good match for Android. They have great customer service, and seem to be more open than others (Verizon). The Amazon partership will be very cool- NO DRM!!!

1 GB? On a phone? I've had T-Mobile for years and I've never, ever gotten anywhere remotely near 1 GB's worth of data in a month. The last time I checked I'd used maybe 30 MB/mo. This isn't a dealbreaker for me at all. 1 Gig is PLENTY for me.

When you are downloading music, 1GB limit per month is insane. You are limiting the users to download less songs. Agreed when you are browsing its PLENTY. What is I receive a few e-mails a day with BIG attachments?

if you're talking Amazon, you can only download over wifi.

its not saying its going to take away your connection its saying you'll be kicked down to a slower speed, and dont forget you have wifi speeds too and if you dont have wifi you dont need to have this phone

I'm a blogger and have frequently gone over 15 gig throughput with video feeds and so on. This because my cell is my only access to the net. Currently Using Sprint's unlimited data plan and the plan is truly unlimited. No voice included and the price is high but unlimited. $90 month. I'm learning new contracts are limited to 5 gig then the choke down to the 50 kByte. http://judgeright.vox.com
