Wii storage solution coming

There were plenty of announcements missing from the Nintendo 2008 E3 press conference this summer, but perhaps most surprising was the fact that the company did not address the ever-growing storage problem plaguing the Wii.

Since WiiWare hit the console earlier this year, the factory-installed 512MB of internal storage just isn't cutting it. Nintendo is essentially shooting itself in the foot: here we have all these new games to download and play, but only the capacity to store a limited number of them.

Kotaku is now reporting that the company does indeed have a storage solution on the way, but it won't come in the form a physical hard drive. Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime tells Club Nintendo magazine that we'll see something even better than a hard drive for the Wii.

What's better than a hard drive? Some sort of online solution? While we'd love to see this, we all know Nintendo isn't much of an innovator when it comes to online functionality. Either way, we'll let you know when the company officially announces something. For now, what kind of storage solution do you think we'll see--or would like to see?

An online solution would be worthless as it'd be no better than redownloading the stuff everytime you want to use it.

There is no solution better than simply supporting USB flash/hard drives

i completely agree with this and initially thought that this was going to be their solution. there are 2 USB slots in the Wii and if Nintendo released 16GB or 32GB flash disks for it, then we could easy have up to 64GB of flash memory. this seems to be the most sensible solution.

Yep, you two hit the nail on the head. The best solution to this problem is to have a flash memory drive plugin (some are even up to 64GB's for each stick!) or are external hard drive solution.

Probably their best bet, in all honesty, is something better than a harddrive...

enabling the SD card to be accessed on the fly.

a simple software update and bam! A beautiful storage solution more unlimited and stable than any harddrive, and already available cheaply. With SD cards ranging all the way up to 32GB... also they can be swapped in and out and easily stored... while Harddrives also carry a little thing we call moving parts, and moving parts do this thing called "FAIL" - for the price they charge for the "specialized" harddrives in console's though it's really not worth it for the space you actually get. at least the SD cards are solid.

actually, if i'm not mistaken, 2 gigs would be the bottleneck. i believe the SDHC cards, like the ones you mention that get as large as 32 gigs are a different technology altogether. it's not as simple as a software update.

that said, i think a seamless extension of the internal memory is what they have cooking. it's the lazy way out but still sensible. my 2 gig card has everything i've downloaded copied onto it and it isn't near-full yet. (i have about 50 purchases with VC and wiiware combined). their reason for dragging their feet is becoming really upsetting!

There is a solution already, if Nintendo would stop being difficult. Just allow the SD card to be the primary memory. I bought a SD card for $14 that is 2 gigs. Plenty of space, SD cards are only going to get bigger. I like how small the Wii and don't want a HD nor do I want Nintendo to store my games online. I can handle it myself.

nintendo should make it so you dont need to transfer files from the sd card to play games stored on them. just plug and play

Online storage would FAIL. It takes FOREVER to download small virtual console games... how would I be able to stream dlc to GH:Wt or RB2 (hoping for DLC!!!)? Also, what about people with slower internet connections? Perhaps they are content waiting 10 minutes to download wiiware games.... but actually storing dlc online would be another matter.... just open up the sd slots already, Nintendo!

The problem with using the SD card is that it is painfully slow to transfer data to and from. Nintendo needs to either fix the speed issue and allow up to 32GB cards (2GB is current limit) or enable USB mass storage. What it looks like they are going to do is create some proprietary hardware add-on so that they can charge money to any user that wants more storage. With the hardware already set up for USB and SD access, this looks like it may be just another cash grab by a company that is already rolling in it.

Painfully slow? I transferred 220MB's to my card and it took a little over 9 seconds... not a 'long' time in all honesty. If Nintendo has anything slower than that as a transfer rate to SD cards...... they put in a really crappy SD controller, to be blunt.

Uh, why is what Reggie said being interpreted as "better than a hard drive." That isn't what he said at all. It's being taken out of context. The quote is "we have never said that it will be a hard drive nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store the games."

To me this says they are trying to find a better way to store games than currently exists, not that it will be better than a hard drive. Nor does he even say they aren't doing a hard drive, he just says they never said that it would be a hard drive.

Honestly, I also don't like this "store my games in the cloud" garbage. That's exactly what the Wii already does, it just isn't transparent enough. When you buy a game from the shop channel, you get a local copy, but you have permission to pull it down again whenever you want. So, if you delete it, then its stored online for you to retrieve later. This doesn't include save game files, but really I think downloadable content is the big key here.

Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but I am honestly really frustrated with people taking things out of context, when quotes are fairly straight forward, just to try to garner interest. But then, I guess this is the media, and there more about making money than necessarily reporting accurately.

How about a memory card that can be put in your Nintendo DS that allows you to play your retro games on it? Come on who's with me on this one?

It seems that u never used any nintendo gameconcole!
Man if Nintendo knows one thing - itīs how to make money. And i bet my f**** a** that they will never ever just allow you to buy (non-nintendo-licensed)-sd-cards to save your games.
Its obvoiusly what they will do... they will sell u damn expensive cartridges!!! hahaha, like these suckers always did! trying everything to prevent users copying their games. and to use it u have to buy a new special hardwarething, hahaha. maybe they will combine it with this very innovative new controllerpad, that everyone has to buy (times4), with a special slot for n-sdcards(with the enourmeous capacity of 1GB).
i really love nintendo! but the way they make their money is almost criminal!

The Wii doesn't support SDHC, so 2GB is the largest SD card it will ever support even if they ever do allow us to access them via a software update.

Yeah, and that was stupid of Nintendo because SDHC was around back when the Wii first came out. I don't understand why SDHC is not being supported right now.... I noticed on my new gaming laptop that SDHC wasn't supported, and I didn't understand that at all.

nonsense. never heard of bank switching?
by mjsmatt September 9, 2008 12:01 PM PDT
To suggest there is no current storage solution is a bit disingenuous. There are in fact two:

Solution #1 (offline): Dump unplayed games off to SD card, copy back as needed
Solution #2 (online): Delete unplayed games, redownload as needed

Perhaps these aren't the solutions we're used to having, and may not be ideal... but they're there.

Number 2 isn't going to fly with the 'transfer limits' that some companies are wanting to put on internet service. Number one is more realistic and reasonable in my opinion.

All you wii users are in a pretty pickle huh? My Wii Storage solution is not to use it. Leave it sitting there collecting dust until I turn on my PS3 and blow some of that dust off with its exhaust. Wii is cool ONCE IN A WHILE...like wen friends and or fam comes by but bottom line..PS3 owns all!!! Anyone try ARMY OF 2 YET???!!!WOOT!! Oh yea...screw xbox too...PS3 FTW!!! Noobs...hahaha. 8====D

Ebay seller allyvwell sells 2 gig memory cards for the Wii for $8.99 and free shipping. I bought one and I store games on it that I don't play as much. I copy back as needed.
