The Sony Reader gets ready to turn the page--whatever page it is.

Just got an invite to a Sony Reader event in New York on October 2. No word on whether this involves launching a next-gen electronic book reader or just promoting some new capabilities for the current model, the Reader Digital Book PRS-505, as we head into the holiday buying season.

Either way it seems clear that Sony isn't quite ready to cede the e-book market to Amazon's Kindle. Sony's got the better design, but the wireless download capabilities of the Kindle clearly give it an advantage. Anybody wanna predict what Sony's next move is?

Hunkered down in New York City, Executive Editor David Carnoy covers the gamut of gadgets and writes his Fully Equipped column, which carries the tag line "The electronics you lust for." He's also the author of "Knife Music," a novel. E-mail David. Follow David on Twitter.

Sony will work with Amazon to create a power-platform for all things digitally readable. The product Kindle Reader will feature wireless capabilities, ergonomic design, color e-ink screen with backlight capabilities and a hefty subsidy on the reader to boot. Both companies are willing to work together to create a new standard mainstream device at a loss that will help them boost profits in the near future once the product gains acceptance. SOHO, NYC

If you get an opportunity to ask questions, can find out their timescale for rolling out whatever they are announcing in Europe. The reader has just made it to Ireland and I am sorely tempted by it but want to know whats down the line and likely timescale for Europe before committing.
