Facebook goes quiet, comes alive again

Multiple reports of slow loading and even no loading suggest that Facebook is experiencing problems. What might it be?

In the last few minutes, the e-mails were flying.

Facebook isn't loading. Facebook is down. Facebook is slow. These were all from different CNET colleagues.

Immediately theories abound. Could it be that the implementation of Timeline is somehow overloading its systems? Could it be that there has been another excessive data push, as happened just last week? Is it Anonymous? No, of course not. They promised they wouldn't.

The site Downforeveryoneorjustme confirmed there was a problem. But, no, this couldn't happen. This was the day after the IPO filing. This was supposed to be all joy, all day, every day.

Then, for some of those in pain, the site began to work again. But not before CNET's Topher Kessler took a fine screenshot of the problem. Some say the outage was as long as 15 minutes. Yes, 15 minutes. How did the world still turn?

I have contacted Facebook, who have kindly agreed to check their systems. Yes, it may be a quiet period, but that doesn't mean the site's supposed to go quiet.
