New Verizon ad calls iPhone 'misfit toy'

Verizon has decided to take the spirit of Christmas and shove it into the part of iPhone users' chimneys where Santa would need a pick ax.

Some who viewed the first Droid teaser ad, just a couple of weeks ago, were stunned to see Verizon so baldly declare that the Apple uber-machine was, in some ways, deficient.

Rumor had it that this was an isolated attempt at leveraging publicity for the new Motorola device. However, this new ad shows that the iPhone is firmly on Verizon's list. And it's not Verizon's Christmas list.

The ad places the iPhone on the mythical Island of Misfit Toys. It's an island inhabited solely by those things you don't need, don't want and don't work.

At first, the strange collection of pink spotted elephants and peculiar Grandads-in-a-Box-Wearing-Some-Very-Strange-Bits-of-Chiffon are astonished that the iPhone has come to their island.

But then the Verizon version of the little AT&T 3G coverage map helpfully points out that it might be harder to download your beloved apps in some parts of the country.

"You're going to fit right in here!" squeaks a strange little blue object with wings, a propeller and a hearty dose of gallows humor.

Can one ever imagine that Apple might create a version of the "Get a Mac" structure with a new human (Joss Stone, perhaps?) representing the iPhone and a rather more vulnerable human (Kirstie Alley, perhaps?) representing Verizon?

Somehow, that wouldn't quite fit, would it?

Yep - in the end, Santa delivered them to kids on Christmas, thanks to Rudolph.

Obviously, they brought in the misfit ad creator who formerly crafted the Windows ads without mentioning the product.

Indeed... and it appears to be a direct ripoff of the Christmas special - hope Verizon paid for the rights, else someone's estate (or rather, some corporation) is going to rip them a whole new one.

I really hope they didn't, caus eup goes verizons data plan prices :)
by corolla2 November 9, 2009 1:42 PM PST
This must have been BEFORE Santa came back to the Island of Misfit Toys, rescued them and gave them homes. Because they were taken off the island. And no one's probably going to sue on this ad, as you'd think Verizon's ad agency would be smart enough to license this from Rankin-Bass Productions first.
by cell_reviewer_anon November 11, 2009 10:39 AM PST
Wow! You all are totally missing the point of this commercial! Doesn't surprise me though. IPhone fanboys get so wrapped up into their device that any slight mention that the iPhone is deficient in some area brings huge amounts of rage. Look again at the ad. It is not saying the iPhone is at fault but the AT&T coverage is. Sheesh!
by jlt0x November 12, 2009 5:09 AM PST
Many of you are so emotional about your handheld devices.

The commercial was funny. Obviously, not all the technical info is correct. And obviously, the storyline continues on such that the misfits are eventually accepted....but they were were still misfits.

I like these type of "throw-back" commercials that uses old themes to clown other businesses.

@ Random_Walk

Parody is fair use.

This add is brilliant. It hits at the same level the Apple anti PC adds do. MicroSoft should have thought of it.

The way I see it, it's against AT&T, not against iPhone.

yep, the shot was clearly fired at AT&T's pathetic 3G coverage.
by slapppy November 8, 2009 3:58 PM PST
Not really. You can clearly see that the product shown is the iPhone. What an embarrassment for Apple.
by kungfujesus November 8, 2009 4:42 PM PST
Agreed, clearly targeted at AT&T. Hilarious!
by myles taylor November 8, 2009 5:22 PM PST
Targeted at AT&T but with the bullseye being on AT&T's most popular smartphone: the iPhone.

I'm tired of ads that merely smack at other ads. I understand that in order to get new customers they have to steal them, but it still bothers me. And those Droid ads....the thing falling from the sky and popping out; that told me absolutely nothing about the phone or anything else. At least the "iDon't" ads said something. Interesting that the camera sucks.
by MasterChefD November 8, 2009 6:40 PM PST
It's a swipe at the iPhone via a swipe at AT&T.
by dsharron November 9, 2009 5:18 AM PST
That's the way I seee it...
by jabberwolf November 9, 2009 5:55 AM PST
You're right..

To be against the iphone... theyd have to mention how many apps it has.... 10 for farting.
by Splashes November 8, 2009 3:39 PM PST
This ad is okay, kinda cute -- reminiscent of Apple's Christmas ads of the past few years (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u0OG__i--Q). And it's smart of Verizon to focus on 3G coverage, as that's the Droid's only "feature" that is clearly better than the iPhone and is important to most everyone. The first Droid commercial mentioned a bunch of things only geeks would relate to (open development?). So this is a step in the right direction.

I can't help thinking that another element of Verizon's strategy is to preempt whatever cute animated Christmas ads Apple has in the pipeline. I'm glad to see that someone at Verizon is thinking, anyway.

The screen is bigger with larger resolution, so thats also clearly better than the iPhone. It has a better camera with a flash, also clearly better than iPhone. Can run multiple programs, clearly better than iPhone. These are all features a non-geek can and does care about with phones. So you're mistaken to think the only thing it has going for it is the network. I'm not trying to say this clearly makes it better than the iPhone, but just that there are plenty of other features other than the network.
by solitare_pax November 9, 2009 5:38 AM PST
If the Verizon/Droid product is so much better than AT&T/iPhone why don't they do a clever ad highlighting what it does instead of making clever ads like this?

With ads like these, people might just go with Sprint or some other carrier....
by CrashPad63 November 9, 2009 7:35 AM PST
Slitare, lmao "If the Verizon/Droid product is so much better than AT&T/iPhone why don't they do a clever ad highlighting what it does instead of making clever ads like this? "
This is the question folks have been asking of Apple with their switcher ads. What goes around comes around.
by shuyin84 November 9, 2009 10:00 AM PST
I find it really amusing that all these anti-apple people are applauding Verizon for attacking the iPhones data coverage continuously, when the get angry at apple for repeatedly attacking Microsoft's vulnerability to viruses and other malware, seem like a double standard maybe?
by eltoro2827 November 8, 2009 3:42 PM PST
Somethings wrong with this ad.... First it's not the iPhone.... And secondly where are all the nice verizon selection phones in this ad. I'm just sayin.

Actually the last third of the ad is about Verizon.

And not delivered by the Droid. Both of the featured phones are by HTC. Now, it's easy to confuse the HTC Droid Eris with the Motorola Droid if you look purely at the fact that the word "Droid" is in the name, but the ad is for Verizon smartphones in general.

Grats bro.

Strikes me as a brilliant set-up for a new year?s campaign once Apple finally licenses the iPhone to Verizon.

with Verizon attacking the iPhone the way they have, I really doubt thats gonna happen, if I was apple I'd put it like this...

"If our phone is such garbage as you claim it is, why would you want it on your network at all, I think we'll do you the favor of not offering it to your customers, since it doesn't do half as much as your precious droid does, why would you need us? Sprints been pretty nice lately...."

And I think quite a few people see it that way as well , sorry Verizon, looks like you dug yourself a hole, and now your gonna live in it....
by DKrudop November 8, 2009 4:03 PM PST
Strikes me as fear in Verizon's heart. The bleeding of customers continues......Verizon can chew on it.

I'm thinking the same thing... AT&T and Verizon are fairly close in new subscriber growth these days (VZW is getting 1.7m/Q and ATT is growing like crazy - they're up to 1.2m/Q now).

If the whole 'iPhone on Verizon' rumor turns out to be true, I wonder how much humble pie Verizon will be forced to eat after all this bluster (or rather, how many concessions will they be forced to give)?
by mrcjacobs November 8, 2009 4:40 PM PST
Must be lonely there in the land of make believe. Verizons year to year growth rate continues to be higher than AT&T's. This ad like the ones before it is classic guerilla warefare.Anyone watching the ad will come away remembering that Verizon has more 3G coverage than AT&T. And at the end of the day it's perception that matters. Why do you think AT&T hasn't bothered to fire back an ad of their own? They can't because Verizons ads are true!
by Random_Walk November 8, 2009 9:03 PM PST
"Verizons year to year growth rate continues to be higher than AT&T's"

No one has said differently... or did you need something that badly to support your first sentence? ;)
(I even provided the numbers straight-up... )

"Why do you think AT&T hasn't bothered to fire back an ad of their own?"

Most likely because they've been growing at a faster rate (that is, they've come up from back-of-the-pack to #2 of the US market in just two short years, swallowing Cingular along the way if memory serves).

Funny part is, neither can hold a candle to the likes of NTT, who is the biggest in global revenues (not counting NTT DoCoMo, which sits at #8 all by itself). Verizon and AT&T are #2 and 3, respectively. Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) sits at a fairly close #4 once you count global revenues.

So, err, before you go back into your worship of Verizon and all, realize that they ain't the biggest kid in town, either

(...and this is coming from a guy who uses not an iPhone or Droid phone, but a humble Crackberry).
by davidmcelroy_dotmac November 8, 2009 4:04 PM PST
Once again, this is an "insider ad," something which seems like a crushing blow to the "enemy" when you're inside Verizon, but one which will leave most normal consumers scratching their heads (if they even notice it). The ad in which Verizon WAS effective with this attack on AT&T was when it showed the two 3G coverage maps side by side (above two consumers having differing experiences). Even though it's bit misleading, that was very effective. This new ad would at least be marginally effective if Verizon had been hammering the map comparison theme for much longer. As it is, the meaning will be lost on most people. And, as others have pointed out, to try to proclaim your competition as being a "misfit toy" is to totally misunderstand the metaphor -- since the "misfits toys" were the good guys. Overall, it's just truly dreadful advertising. I'm shocked at how badly ineffective Verizon's advertising has been for the Droid (the stealth bombers) and now this. They need a unified message. Instead, they're all over the metaphorical map.

There's no real metaphor if your target audience doesn't know who the "misfit toys" originally were. The iPhone is aimed at a younger audience. An audience that probably won't interpret this add the same way you or I will because MOST will not have seen the older movies you and I may have (admittedly some will have). In advertising you don't necessarily have to care what your message says to EVERYBODY, though you should, as long as you get the point across to the people you want to target.
by davidmcelroy_dotmac November 8, 2009 8:17 PM PST
@aaron_van: I write and produce advertising, so I'm fairly familiar with what advertising should do. And since the Christmas story they're referencing has aired each and every year on TV since the mid-'60s, I have a feeling that a lot more young people are familiar with this than you assume.
by jholladay November 9, 2009 6:10 AM PST
I agree. Putting iPhone in the "misfit" category is kind of like making them the underdog.......and people love to pull for the underdog. I think this ad backfires on VZ. I've had an iPhone for 6 months now. 3G is just about everywhere that I actually need it, but the cool feature of the iPhone that no one ever talks about is how is automatically connects to any AT&T WiFi hotspot (including Starbucks) whenever in range. No passwords, sign on, etc. - it just connects. And at speeds that blow away VZ 3G service. All the VZ ads come across to me like a kid who didn't get tickets to the big game, so he just says the game is stupid when he really just wishes he could go!
by ssampier November 12, 2009 8:13 AM PST
Clearly the ad is retro and retro is in.

I like the ad. I had to lookup what the misfit toys were but now I enjoy the ad more.
by snortpath November 8, 2009 4:05 PM PST
Not sure of what they speak of when it comes to coverage in Alaska. You cannot subscribe to Verizon here, you use their partner ACS Alaska. The displayed 3G coverage is false, I work in Prudhoe Bay which they show as 3G and it is only the AT&T's version of EDGE on CDMA. Super slow and glitchy.

But yes AT&T's coverage up here is the pits. Been waiting forever to get 3G in Fairbanks. AT&T promises 3G will be available the next season for the last 2 years. You folks in the Lower 48 are lucky in the sense you have true choices!

Let the games begin! This should be a great ad war.

I love my iPhone and abandoned Verizon precisely since they didn't have the device I wanted. I still won't abandon my iPhone as I absolutely love how flawlessly all my Apple products work in concert with one another.

However, I would strongly consider abandoning AT&T if other networks with better coverage starting selling the iPhone. Good luck to the Android OS. Good competition generally has the effect of creating stronger products as the wars ensue. The true beneficiary is ultimately the consumer.

Excellent post and spot on. This Droid should push Apple to make their iPhone even better. I'd move to Verizon if they let you keep your unused minutes otherwise they are a rip off.
by varase November 10, 2009 8:29 AM PST
Something you should remember is that not only didn't they have the cool phone you wanted, but they crippled whatever cool features were in the phone you got.

Verzon has done more to keep smart phones stupid than any other carrier.

One wonders what wll happen when smart phones which actually make consuming bandwidth enjoyable - and let's face it those haven't existed until quite recently - start gnawing at VZW.
by Dan7637 November 8, 2009 4:50 PM PST

watch the ad again guys. Its actually complimentary of the iphone, but rats on AT&T's bad support of such a great device
by MeepMan November 8, 2009 8:43 PM PST
Notice how the other toys also had single problems in them, but those problems ruined the product. The coverage is the problem for the iPhone.
by shuyin84 November 9, 2009 10:08 AM PST
doesn't really seem like the coverage has ruined the iPhone, typically 30 million customer don't buy a product thats been "ruined"
by bohyah256 November 8, 2009 4:51 PM PST
Clearly Verizon would not Dis the iPhone as sooner or later they need to have it in their lineup. Actually the ad was complimentary to the iPhone and all it's capabilities. It was an obvious dig at AT&T's 3G coverage and mock sympathy for the poor iPhone shackled to that carrier's network. Brilliant Ad, by this time next year AT&T won't be the exclusive provider of the iPhone - write it down.

by pjhenry1216 November 8, 2009 7:17 PM PST
The PSP or even the Nintendo DS is the best portable gaming system. Gaming on the iPhone is completely sub-par to either of those systems. Best gaming on a phone? Arguably so.
by stanley0301 November 8, 2009 5:19 PM PST
it is interesting that they are such idiots--all should know that while you could download apps from your phone most everyone uses the internet on their host computer--last time i checked you could get internet most anywhere--the day will never dawn when Verizon will have enough apps to even consider putting one in your pocket--I would be nice if Apple would decide they were rich enough and cut ATT loose--the day that would happen would be the day the "other" phone brands died--price, and price alone (of service) is what is keeping the want to be's alive. I bought mine on ebay, unlocked it and pay about $30 a month.

If/when Verizon gets the iPhone (or maybe before) AT&T will rip them about the lack of simultaneous data voice.
